2025 College Football Playoffs Discussion (12 Team Format)

REF JAIL INMATE OF THE WEEK

G9oiQwgXoAACNVZ

While it may have been technically correct, I don't think any of us needed the Sugar Bowl to include a final second that felt like half an hour. To recap:
  • Ole Miss kicked the game-winning field goal with 6 seconds left on the clock.
  • The Rebels kicked off, which ended with an attempted lateral by Georgia hitting the end zone pylon for a safety
  • The officials ruled there was 1 second on the clock when that happened, forcing Georgia to attempt a free kick following the safety
  • Georgia recovered an onside kick.
  • Because Ole Miss never touched the ball on the free kick, the clock never ran. A second remained on the clock.
  • This gave Georgia one more offensive play down 39-34.
  • Instead of attempting a Hail Mary, the Bulldogs opted for a short pass and about 800 laterals before Ole Miss got the stop.
Again, most of this is not the fault of the refs in a technical sense, but I think we all would have been better off if none of it ever happened.

We just saw the 2nd worst offense, by efficiency, of the Ryan Day era.

That would seem to support the idea that go fast--> more plays--> more points-->best way to win but again, that's if offense was linear. It is not. When you go fast on offense, it has an effect on the defense.

The last two columns are Defensive FEI from the same source.

Given a sample of 7 and the obvious limitations of that it seems to me that Day is intentionally slowing down from his early days (and he commented on this, so not much of a guess) because other than the outlier generational 2019 team, he feels going faster on offense hurt his defense.

Now here is where the small sample size comes in. Two of his worst offensive teams were 2 of the past 3 years after he slowed down. They were also his worst QB (McCord) and his rFreshman QB Sayin with his OL and RB downgrades from 2024.

So it's pretty clear and everyone has touched on it to some point-if you are going to slow down and be efficient, you will score less but probably increase your overall odds of winning. However, the trade off is that you have to execute to a high standard and if you added another column of QB by name for those years I think its simply comes down to that. His offense goes as his QB goes no matter the skill player talent.

QB is the constraint. Other positions will impact that obviously but CFB is getting closer to the NFL game where QB is the preeminent position.

Fields, Stroud, Howard > McCord and Sayin (so far).

I think things may be worse than even they look right now for them. Boob Salsa's message to the people this morning was basically "yes Michigan is currently behind the ball on the portal right now but don't panic because there's definitely a plan" which likely means they didn't see some of these coming and are scrambling for solutions.

so if it's tempo and not execution why did it stop working? You think Day intentionally slowed it back down so he wouldn't score?

Look, I know people are frustrated but the tempo thing is confusing approach with result.

The single highest correlation to scoring is efficiency (something in the .70 range). Plays per game has a correlation of something in the .20's.
Personally I think they didn’t run tempo more because the couldn’t. The offensive players aren’t practiced enough for it, but more importantly I don’t think the coaching staff has the ability to do that consistently in a game. It requires a lot of cogs working well together and we had just flipped the offensive coaching on its head, flipping who is in the box and who is calling the plays.

A smidgen of self awareness and a lot of religious hate creeping in over at MGoBlow.

Theres still a large amount of them who think a flood of coaches and players from programs who's peak years have been 10 win seasons in the Big 12/Pac 12 with much more 8ish win type seasons in-between are going to come to the B1G and suddenly become annual national contenders which is peak DFBIA hopium

Yep a more experienced Sayin wins that game even with our weaknesses but it happens
He needs to learn to make his decision and get the ball off. If that means a lower completion percentage and a few more picks, that's preferable to 5 sacks every time we play a team with a strong DL.

Except for in the second half against the Canes when the Buckeyes HAD to use tempo, it freaking worked and Bain and Messidor were both on the sideline sucking wind.

No one is saying to go 2013 Oregon Ducks Ludicrous Speed, but damn. At least *try* to put the defense back on its heels.
