The Ohio State Baseball (Official Thread)

so in the state of Ohio alone OSU is at best 4th?

Yeah, there's no excuse for this, aggy. I've never bought into the myth that Ohio State (or any other cold weather school) can be a national power in baseball in this era. But to not be the best program in Ohio is absolutely inexcusable.

OC Arthur Smith (Official Thread)

I did not say, "He's probably not real bright," or anything about "most rich kids."
Excuse me for paraphrasing what you said. So let's look at exactly what you said.

Rich kids like Arthur are often not the sharpest bulb in the shed.

Rich kids like Arthur
- A very reasonable interpretation of those words would indicate that Arthur is a typical rich kid, i.e., like most rich kids. So if I say, "the majority of rich kids" instead of "most rich kids" it has a different meaning?

are often not the sharpest bulb in the shed - This one is a little more difficult. I understand not the sharpest tool in the shed. I understand not the brightest bulb in the box. Both indicate someone who is not real bright. Maybe the writer of said post is not the brightest tool in the shed? Either way, it is meant to group a certain group of people as not very bright.

High School Baseball

HS season starts tomorrow - son is considered a tweener and SHOULD get some varsity time, but starting on JV. The coaching staff has done a great job of telling each boy what they expect from each of them, very clear with where they see them, and expected progress, ect. He can play any position, not a strong pitcher, but can do it if needed. He'll start at 2nd and be the backup catcher, but also get some reps in the OF from what he was told. Excited to see how this year goes. He was 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI's in the scrimmage last week, also threw out a runner trying to steal 3rd, so pretty solid day

good luck this season!!

Mischaracterize? Those sentences are a perfect example of stereotyping. He came from a rich family so he's probably not real bright and he's probably unmotivated because he never had to work for what he got. You hope he's not as dumb and lazy as most rich kids. That's mischaracterizing?

Please point out the portion of your post that is not stereotyping and I have mischaracterized.

skiing thread

Right? I’ve done this on water and it’s a blast. To be clear, I was happy to just stay up on the water, I was not getting 30 feet of air like these guys. But, I have the kites and snowboard… I’ve just not had the space to do it on the snow yet. One day... Candidly, I’m more into the idea of kite-buggies than snowkiting. I’m not much for cold weather sports.

Here’s a really good (read: it’s real, not overproduced influencer crap) video of a kit buggy. It looks so much fun, but I don’t know where I’d ever find a beach / field or whatever like that.

This just makes me want to go get out my kites.

This is another fun video. This guy pretty much flys down the ski hill on a Flysurfer Peak 5 6-meter kite. FWIW: This is my primary kite model. I have it in a 2.5, 4 and 8 meter for different wind conditions for when I want to fly with a bar but I have a couple of small / medium Peter Lynn kites that are 4-line handles for stunting.

I was recently in Bonaire SCUBA diving and we watched some kiteboarders, including one guy who was getting serious air and doing skateboard like tricks involving taking off the board, flipping it around and putting it back on while he was in the air, between dives one day. It's something I would have loved to try twenty years ago, but now I suspect I'd end up looking like Charlie Brown if I tried it.

Headlines You Don't See Every Day (outside of Florida)

Reminds me of a terrible joke from when i was a kid. You’ve been warned.

Doorbell rings. Kid says, “Mrs. Brown, can Jimmy come out to play baseball?”

She says, “You children know that Jimmy has no arms or legs.”

Kid says, “Yeah, we just need him to be second base.”

Hey, I warned you, you could’ve stopped reading.

Resulting Oil costs (and not politics)

I believe that’s correct. As a result, gas stations do well when the price is rising and get killed when the price is falling. Some big chains might buy futures/swaps/options to hedge against price volatility, but I doubt the independent operators could manage that.
I think that's why the stations make most of their money inside the store selling beverages, snack, etc.

Rich kids like Arthur are often not the sharpest bulb in the shed because they never had to work for anything. No pressure at school to get A's, no reason to do the work it takes to grow as a person. Mike Brown, e.g. Hopefully he'll turn out to be much more effective than Tim Beck, at least.

Mischaracterize much?

That's a novel concept, and one that I explicitly mentioned in the post you quoted, lol.

Butler Bulldogs (Official Thread)

Butler names former Bulldogs player Ronald Nored as new coach

Butler Selects Ronald Nored '12 to Lead Men's Basketball Program - Butler University Athletics

Butler has hired former Bulldogs player Ronald Nored to succeed Thad Matta as head coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Nored is a 2012 graduate of Butler, who played under then head coach Brad Stevens, helping the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national championship game in 2010 and 2011.

"The term 'dream job' doesn't do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program," Nored said in a statement. "Butler is an incredibly special place. As a player, I poured blood, sweat and tears into this program. No one appreciates both the responsibility and the potential that comes with this position more than me."

Nored has worked his way through the assistant coaching ranks with stints in college basketball, the G League and NBA, most recently serving on the staff of the Atlanta Hawks over the past three years. Prior to that, he spent time as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, Charlotte Hornets and Boston Celtics.

"Ron is a relentless worker with an elite basketball IQ and a proven track record of developing talent at the highest level of basketball. He is the ultimate competitor, and he will cultivate that same quality within his team and staff," athletic director Grant Leiendecker said in a statement. "While he understands the soul of this university, we didn't hire him for his history here -- we hired him for his vision of what we can become and how we will get there. I have total confidence that Ron will put his own fingerprints on this program, set a new standard for our student-athletes, and elevate Butler Basketball to new heights."

After coaching in the NFL for the last 15 years, Smith views the chance to coach in college as an exciting new challenge and an opportunity for him to grow as a coach.

“That’s really the thing you pride yourself on. We're always talking to players about growing, having that growth mindset, getting out of your comfort zone, and for me, it was a good challenge with where I'm at in my career,” Smith said.

The expectations for Smith will be just as high as they were for Patricia and Kelly. As Ohio State’s offense looks to bounce back from a rough end to the 2025 season, in which the Buckeyes scored just 24 combined points in losses to Indiana and Miami, Smith is being brought in for the job of building Ohio State’s offense back to a national championship level. But he’s excited about Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith and the rest of the talent he’s inheriting and embracing the championship expectations in Columbus.

“You don't go to Ohio State if you don't welcome those expectations, and it's the same thing in the NFL,” Smith said. “The expectation is to win every Sunday, and you love that challenge as a competitor, and it's kind of what gets you going as a coach.”

Luke Montgomery Sacrificing Favorite Fried Chicken Sandwich, Working to Take Leap With Buckeyes' Offensive Line

Luke Montgomery is making sacrifices to tap further into his potential this offseason. Great sacrifices.

Countless numbers of his favorite fried chicken sandwiches have been barred from his taste buds.

“Fried chicken,” Montgomery said of his favorite food he had to give up on his improved diet. “It got me pretty good. Every Monday night, putting down a buttermilk chicken sandwich from Hudson 29. Pretty freaking good.”

Entering his senior season with 16 starts under his belt, Montgomery is dedicating his full self to a better season at offensive guard and a better close to the campaign for the whole of Ohio State’s offensive line after a brutal close to the 2025 season from the unit.

“We want to be the Joe Moore Award winners,” Montgomery said. “I think that's the top of the line for us. There's no excuse not to be. That's our standard, and that's where we want to be.”

Just sayin': When I first read the headline I wondered if he sacrificed the chicken sandwich to Jobu?
