I think I read it on here before, but after reading the emails, it is possible for me to think that Tresell did not treat them as very important. I mean his demeanor was almost like it was a running joke. Perhaps it was the source, meaning he knew about Cicero's past. Maybe he was distracted by the Spring Game. If those were the only things that mentioned the "scandal" ...and I wasn't taking it seriously... they sure as hell would have gotten lost in my email catacombs and forgotten...until the fall...
And as said before... I still would have covered my ass and put into someone else's hands and let the chips fall. It would have been a messy season, but at least there would be no talking of vacated wins and all that.
Look, I have to say something up front. It is the curse of lawyerdom. We have this urge to comment on things. We see the world as just a big pile of evidence. Everything has some relationship to other factors, and every statement made by anybody is subject to examination and critique - sorta like a gut reaction. That is why nobody want to marry us or hang/drink with us but other lawyers who will find this obsession interesting.
So if I point out something and it is not "in favor" of the official story in the press conference, it is not because I want tOSU or Tress to be "wrong" or to make people want to dislike a great man and coach- - - I just am commenting on what I see as the strength of the evidence. I take no joy in this problem, and have no desire to see things get worse.
So - there was a moment in the conference Tress was asked if he had forwarded the e-mail to anyone. I thought he nodded and started to say "uh-huh" when Gene stopped him and said "He cannot answer that!"
If Tress forwarded it to anyone up the food chain, then it may be that there are more problems ahead.
Gothmog, only in a world where AJ Greene does not get suspended for doing exactly what your guys did - and in a world where Greene's suspension was not HUGE news in college football - would Tress or anyone halfway cognizant not know that it was a problem. You wanna know
when the national news and sports center were talking about how AJ was suspended for four (4) games for selling a bowl jersey??????? - September 11, 2010. That is TWO FREAKING days before Tress signed his NCAA compliance certificate that he had no knowledge of any current violations. So the players selling paraphernalia thing was not on his mind that week? Man, I just cannot see that at all.
And when your own coach says out of his mouth that he knew when he learned about it that it likely meant eligibility issues were "inevitable", your supposition that he thought it was a joke simply won't fly. If Tress thought it would result in suspensions at some point, then that is pretty f-in serious. (not picking on you, I know we are all just thinking out loud)
You add the two up and you get your Head Coach admitting that he knew that the selling of stuff by your guys would eventually result in eligibility issues - coupled with the time period where than factual scenario is literally shoved in every AD and Head Coach's face by the AJ Greene Publicity - and I think (think, not hope) that you may have a recipe for the NCAA being really, really, mad at Tress and tOSU about this.
The timing and signing of the compliance certificate, coupled with the fact that nobody said squat at the December press conference when we were told that tat-gate was disclosed in December, and the rest of the country (and the NCAA) think that y'all
played the NCAA. If Tress in fact forwarded the e-mails to anyone above his grade at tOSU - or to anyone in compliance - and nothing was done, then the NCAA may have other issues.
I cannot find a copy of a transcript of the Q & A. And so I cannot be sure that my recollection was correct. Did any of you remember it this way?
Again, I hope that we see the last of this, and the NCAA rubber stamps the 2 game deal. (I
personally think it way too light, but I do not want to be seen as advocating for more bad news for y'all - if you can see a distinction) I guess we will see.
