The Show Clause for Tress I think [censored]es me off the most.

Doesn't bother me one bit.

"Of great concern to the committee was the fact that the former head coach became aware of these violations and decided not to report the violations," the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions wrote in its report.

Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a committee member, said in a teleconference that Tressel's failure to act was, "considered very serious and, frankly, very disappointing."

Not one bit. As I watch Coach Meyer lead a team through the 2012 season with ZERO hope of reward at the end, regardless of accomplishment, I won't be losing sleep worrying over the fate of someone whose freely-made choices massively impacted this outcome.

OK I think most of us are in agreement that
1) We're glad the decision is done
2) It stinks but it could have been worse
3) The NCAA is pretty much a joke of an institution
4) All in all the situation should have been handled better/differently
5) Those who are still around need to go
6) This last year has sucked, with all the garbage media coverage, speculation, worry, and has turned the corner and is approaching the end.
7) Rules were broken by JT and players, and like it or not someone has to be punished, and JT is being punished

Now, I have been a little busy this year but I do recall
-that the ncaa has not ruled on the Auburn situation at all even after GC asked/told them they were done
-the U has a lot more going on with that investigation
-the PSU situation is a whole new and different topic that will call for all sorts of investigation and ruling

So while I don't like it a 1 year bowl ban is that only one year, and 4 more schollies are just 4 more. The thing that concerns me the most is the extra year of probation. While it seems as simple as don't break the rules, it is not. With an institution as big as tOSU and a program as big, popular and beloved as the football program is these types of problems always are out there. But I will look at it as this, now that the decision is done we begin moving on toward that 2012, 2013 national title.

The NCAA did tell Auburn that the Cam Newton investigation was closed, a few weeks after Chizik foolishly asked them the question at a meeting. However, they could still face other issues due to Bobby Lowder's and Milton McGregor's alleged shenanigans via their bank and casino/racetrack, respectively.

But as was posted in the Auburn thread:

You do not win cases by relying on what you think happened. What I think, or the NCAA thinks, it immaterial. What they can prove is sorta the point.

I'm not disagreeing with you on the likelihood of what occured, just on what that means anyone can do NOW based upon current demonstrable evidence.

So it's what can be proved (unless it's how harsh they want to be when it's time to make the ruling).

I don't think this has been posted, but I only skimmed the last 20 or so pages since the ruling came out.

Dr. Saturday with what strikes me as a very fair assessment of the situation.

It's worth a read.

He says that USC had 'lesser offenses', when they were hit with Lack of Institutional Control, rather than tOSU's lesser Failure to Monitor charge.

And he glosses over the fact that tOSU found Tressel's emails and self-reported that violation, it wasn't found by any reporter or NCAA investigator. That's a huge difference in the comparative actions and reactions of the two universities.

So I wouldn't call it a "very fair assessment".

This isn't like European football (UEFA) where you have the possibility of getting more of a punishment if you appeal a sanction.

That being said, regardless if it's fruitless, would it really be that detrimental to appeal - outside of keeping individuals/departments on staff that you eventually want to remove?

"But it is curious that the ugly brawl between Xavier and Cincinnati basketball players resulted in no arrests and no NCAA sanctions. Sucker punches are OK, as long as they don’t come with bowl rings."
"The bottom line is, it’ll be different for Ohio State football for a year or so, but not a whole lot. "
"Actually the penalties could be a benefit for recruiting."

Dr. Saturday regularly gets pub from and is quoted by mgoblog. That's all I need to say when it comes to how far off base your conclusion is that Dr. Saturday made "a very fair assessment of the situation."

Normally Mandel views swing wildly from one side to the other ... this looks at how our ruling might affect others
Ohio State could set the precedent for future program penalties

Well, it's possible the Ohio State case will replace USC as the new baseline for those cases. Personally, I think Tuesday's ruling was perfectly reasonable. Neither a one-year bowl nor nine docked scholarships will cripple the program, but preemptively rendering Urban Meyer's first team ineligible for the Big Ten title is no slap on the wrist, either. On top of the suspensions and coaching turmoil that doomed the Buckeyes to a 6-6 season this year, the program will have served two years in purgatory for the misdeeds of Jim Tressel, Terrelle Pryor and others.

Well stated. We have a winner.

I'll still be making my annual trip from Western NY for a Sept. game and will love the new direction of the program. Look forward.

Go Buckeyes !
