The Wolf Brothers, now John Wolf I guess, have/has long had a turf war with the university.

The Battelle/OSU economic engine often gets in the way of how Wolf wants to run the city.

The physicians at the Med School have a voice in who gets on hospital boards of directors -- at one point in time there was a Wolf or a Wolf relative on every hospital board in southeast Ohio-- and this leads to clashes.

The liberal political voice is counter to his. Open housing, free speech, Cold War and censorship were issues where the two sides clashed long and loud throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The school remembers when open enrollment and dorm complexes were forced on it, and its status as the flagship university undermined by Jim Rhodes - hand picked and heavily supported by the Wolfs and the Dispatch/WBNS - and the former president of Miami, John D. Millett - a Wolf brothers political appointment to chair the higher education commission. The Miami president succeeding Millett, Phillip Shriver, continued to create degree programs and expanded campuses to the detriment of OSU.

You can't draw up an in-10/20/30-year plan for Coumbus/Franklin County/Ohio and leave the bright folks from OSU out and then the plan gets away from Wolf's ideas of how city/county/state growth should run.

OSU football was one thing the Brothers/Dispatch/WBNS liked about the place, especially because the football program clashed so often with the elements of the school the Wolfs detested.

To which I'll add the very close relationship to and diametrically opposed vision for Ohio State that the one man in town rich enough 30 years ago to tell the Wolfe cousins to go [censored] themselves has been pushing for three decades.

The Wolfes have long been something of a city version of Boss Hogg. They had no desire in seeing Columbus become more cosmopolitan and grow beyond their ability to control it. Wexner's vision (and the increasing realization of that vision) for the city (and the university) has always been a direct threat to this.

No amount of evidence will deter people from assuming the worst, which is why Dohrmann ran with so many vague details about OSU from anonymous sources.
Given TP's history and the numerous loaner cars - when coupled with the number of rides sold going through the one guy - it was not really unreasonable to suspect the possibility of wrong doing. But it is great to see that there is nothing funny about the paper work and registration of the vehicles from that dealership. Some needed sunlight in a dark, cloudy month.

Was a Galbraith (SP?) ever in the mix?

The Galbreaths have been "in the mix" in various ways of course--Dan was chairman of the board at OSU--but they didn't want to hold Columbus back as ORD claims the Wolfes have: much the opposite, in fact. John W. Galbreath was a huge influence on the expansion of Columbus and was actually something of a mentor locally for Les Wexner.

I am still a little worried about the report though. The BMV said that the cars were paid in full, but does it mention who paid for them? If the players did pay for them, everyone will just end up saying that the boosters gave them money to buy them. I'm afraid that we are far from the bottom of the car dealings.

Stop worrying your not in controll.....Disney is, thats why i'm watching Handy Manny right now

Suspecting and reporting as news are two different things..way different! The SI report was not intended to show the author's suspicions but rather ran as an accusation and even as facts by indicating that there is a "source". These reports make them liable for law suits.

Report: Car dealerships made money on sales to Ohio State athletes, families
BMV investigation found no violations of state law; it did not check for NCAA violations

BY RANDY LUDLOW

The Columbus Dispatch

Read the report by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
An investigation released today by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles found no irregularities in how two car dealerships reported the sales of vehicles to Ohio State University athletes and family members.

Investigators examined 25 vehicle sales from Jack Maxton Chevrolet and Auto Direct to OSU players and relatives. Their report stated that the dealerships made a profit on 24 of the sales.

The BMV did not disclose the prices the dealers paid for the vehicles. The report said the numbers were proprietary business information.

Investigators found no evidence in the dealers' records that memorabilia or tickets were part of the transactions.

I'm just relieved that several days have gone by without a new allegation. Could it be that everyone who wants to talk already has, and that reporters are running dry? I hope so.

It could be that the tat 5 and Tressel's 10.1 violation are the substance of our problems. Man, I hope that's true. The tat 5 thing has already been ruled on, and the person for the 10.1 no-no is no longer there.

The sanctions could be less than we imagined they would be. I'll call it now that if we get way less than USC, the haters will be talking about how the NCAA is afraid of OSU, they are partners in corruption, etc. Real fun, but I'll welcome it.

All we can do is hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

At this point, I think our worst penalty will be the ire of fans everywhere who really want to believe that JT and the entire OSU program are dirty.

There's going to be a lot of pissed off, dissappointed people when Ohio State doesn't get the death penalty.

Only one persons opinion on Ohio State Football matters to me, and that is my own. Everyone else, including my own out of state family members - can simply go fuck themselves and enjoy losing to the Buckeyes as usual.

:oh:
