I don't get this I guess.

Step back and imagine all of this is happening at "rival x"...wouldn't you, or at least a large majority of us, say "x" coach needs to fry? I know I would.

The "everybody else is doing it" excuse smacks of blind homerism...but maybe I'm wrong.
Just because we would all be right there with the pitchforks if it were Auburn or Texas doesn't mean everybody else isn't doing it. It's not an excuse.....it's a complaint that Ohio State is being the scapegoat for things that kids at even D2 schools do. If I had the time, I'd follow some Penn State players around. You wouldn't be able to knock me over with a feather when I find out they have nicer cars than they can afford.

Well okay, but what if their coach signed a compliance report that he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing? I still stand by that just because everybody else is supposedly doing it doesn't mean tOSU shouldn't have to pay. And I think the crux of the issue, at least with me, was the lying...not just that some players sold/traded some stuff. He knew it was going on and said that it wasn't. Now, more and more is coming out. I'm trying to remain objective here and I'm just not seeing anything unjust going on here.

Just in light of the entire situation and the media coverage surrounding it, should Big Ten fans (or Ohio State fans, perhaps) feel honored that ESPN allocated another blogger to the conference (two bloggers)?

ESPN.com did it with the SEC earlier, now the Big Ten has two.

So there's either that much news, scandal, interest or a combination of the three (only B1G and SEC have two).

i don't think anybody is saying that. let's see all the other teams pay now. starting with sending douchebag dohrman to Auburn. [Mark May]....make it a reality show.

I could get behind that. I have a feeling Auburn is gonna fry eventually. Might be a slow burn like USC, but they'll get theirs.

Jeff, if so, do you think it has consequences for Gee and/or Smith?
I think that Smith has mismanaged this situation from the beginning, and should be relieved of his duties as soon as possible. He should have known that keeping Tressel would have led to the resulting media feeding frenzy, and now Ohio State is in a much worse position in terms of public relations (although not necessarily with the NCAA) than they were four months ago.

Gee looks like an ass every time he opens his mouth about football (going back to the infamous quote about the 1992 tie against Michigan being one of the greatest wins in school history and continuing right up to the disastrous post-Yahoo press conference), but I think that he could reasonably have been expected to defer to Smith in a situation like this (remember, one of Smith's strong points was allegedly dealing with NCAA compliance issues). If you can't trust your AD to handle a crisis like this, then why hire him in the first place? Now that Smith has proven to be incompetent, it's time to cut your losses and dump him.

I'd really like to know what's taking so long to give Smith his walking papers. Unacceptable IMO.

I get the feeling it will be sooner rather than later. Might be a matter of lining up a successor first. Letting JT go is turning into a fiasco...no point in making a carnival out of the AD position as well.

It would be tough to bring a new AD in to ride through and properly defend the institution to the NCAA....my feeling is he is gone after the ruling. The only way it would work is to clean house and lie down in front of the NCAA and say do what you will.

I would think that now is the time for the change. The new AD will have been part of the body cavity search that is currently going on within the department and will be better off in the long run knowing where the cracks were and what needs to be watched more closely in the future.

Well I finally have the internet back so I figured I would weigh in....

First off let me just say that I love Jim Tressel. I think he's a wonderful human being and in many circumstances a terrific coach. However, I love this university more than any coach.

In saying that though I believe that this University is better off without Jim leading this program if all this is true. For me there's just too many coincidences in his past that would indicate this is all just random happenings. Now I don't know if all the new accusations are true, but if they are these problems go back well into his YSU days as far as cars and money go. I understand that he cannot watch all his players all the time, but he can turn a blind eye that's for sure. I've played all levels of football (minus pro of course) and the players generally park in the same area as the coaches. I don't know about you guys but if I see a player riding around in ANYTHING with rims or looking like a new ride I would automatically wonder what's going on.

As far as Gene Smith or Gordon Gee go. Gene oversee's Tressel and Gee oversee's Gene. Well when the whole world thinks Jim Tressel can do no wrong and there's no signs of fire why dig into the football program? Digging into the program is Jim's job, and if Jim's commiting violations then it's Gene's job to take the appropriate steps. For me there's no blame Gene or Gordan because ultimately they did the right thing which is accept Jims resignation (more than likely forced him to) for his violations. I don't know what goes into a athletic directors responsibilities but i'd like to believe they over see the people (head coaches) that are involved in each individual sport. If the softball team is cutting corners then guess what? The head coach is probably letting players get away with is. Jim was in control of the football program, not Gene or Gordon.

This really sucks because the University is ultimately going to have to pay for this neglegence on Jims part. I would be shocked if we don't vacate last years wins as well as going forward being on bowl probation, scholarship reductions, and probation for atleast 3-5 years. Which, IMO, is unfair because we took the necessary steps to make sure the football program is getting back on track. I don't remember this sort of problem under John Cooper (Grades were though), and I do believe Tressel Ultimately could cope with this because technically he wasn't lying. He just wasn't telling the whole truth which can (as we all see) be just as bad.

What's funny about all of this is I was one that was so nervous of Pryor going to Michigan and making our life hell. Now, I wish he would've. When the star player is driving around cars and trading things in for cash and tattoo's and not getting caught what do you think a player like Solomon Thomas or Boom Herron is thinking? LEAD BY EXAMPLE, can either be one of the best methods of leadership or in this case one of the absolute worst. Now we will all feel the consequences for the next 2-5 years.

I work in Sales and I have a small analogy. I've had circumstances in the past where I've had some people who could sell anything to anybody! Always met quota's, always hit goals, always driving business. However, I recently fired someone because they were coloring outside the lines. YEAH, I could've turned my head knowing how awesome this individual was but If I did that my store would ultimately suffer in which case then I'm out of a job. Did it set me back in performance? No question, but was it worth it long term? You bet. There's Plenty of talent out there (in my case salesmen) who will do it the right way and are just as good. It may set you back short term but you NEVER sacrifice over all picture for a quick fix success.

After reading the SI article, I keep on thinking about this so I thought I might as well post it even though I probably will take a severe beating.

Even though most of the SI article cannot be substantiated by the NCAA for some reason I think it will be in the back of the minds of the members of the Infractions Committee when they decide our fate and I do not think it is going to be a pretty sight. I might be totally off base but I think if we get less than what USC received we will be very fortunate. Remember, quite a bit out of the USC stuff could not be substantiated either.
