Tuesday. Sorry, it's been a long week. Carnival Season is coming up, and I've been tasked with forging the safety inspection certificates for the kiddie rides. It's a big jump up in responsibility.

10tv just had a follow-up story on the news. They claim the BMV found no crimes occurred in any of the deals.

Gibson traded in a 2003 Monte Carlo (bought in 2007 for ~$15k, traded in for only $1k) in order to reduce the price of the car down to $13700. Salesman told BMV that the dealership does similar deals for non-athletes in order to get the sales tax down.

[In Ohio, you pay sales tax on the price of the purchased vehicle if it's a used car, while you pay sales tax only on the difference (sale minus trade) on a new car.]

It's a whole bunch of nothing, in my imo.

LINK to the original story.

And AtO's take:

.../snip/...

To summarize, it appears Jack Maxton Chevrolet creatively packaged their deals with trade-in customers in order to reduce tax amounts on car purchases. I don't know how common this is in the used-car world, but the BMV is interested enough to continue their investigation.

In any case, it doesn't matter what the BMV finds when they analyze Jack Maxton Chevrolet's tax forms as long as no special treatment was given to Ohio State football players.

With the BMV's conclusion to this part of the investigation, it would also seem to bring closure to the used-car story. Most of the transactions occurred at this Maxton dealership, and it appears that Ohio State and its players are exonerated from any wrongdoing that would interest the NCAA. The NCAA often relies on the judgment of extraneous organizations like the BMV when investigating cases of improper benefits, so this is a big victory for Ohio State as an institution and a welcome bit of news for Ohio State fans.

The story gives the exact details regarding the Gibson situation.

i think he is referring to the fact that he probably didnt have 15 K in college...i know i didnt have 4 dollars while i was in college
Considering Thad got a loan.. don't think he was talking about that.. maybe so. Don't know. Don't care. Tired of some SCUM loving WalMart Wolverine commenting on this. Go do it on a SCUM site.

Chicago is a great sports town. With its mix of passion for pro and college, the best in American in my opinion. Being a great sports town does not mean that these guys are treated like Gods when they walk around town. The fact that Chicago media and fans can be brutal towards their own (ask Mr. Cutler) speaks to that. Hell, Domers absolutely HATE The Tribune for not being in love with the program.

The way Chicagoans acted towards Bartman was more backwoods/small time than anything OSU fans ever did to a fan or former player. He had to basically join the witness protection program to get away from all the lunatics. (BTW, someone paid over $100k for that ball. How's that compare to some $1500 trinkets?)

He was on Outside the Lines today and I thought he came off sounding very non-objective to the point of losing credibility.

Whether he had any to begin with at this point is debatable. Or, maybe it isn't debatable.

His Twitter is just hysterical. 90% of his tweets are anti-buckeye shit. He was constantly posting back when all this shit broke out, and then he never really posted anything but now he's back at it again with more to say.

He really bashed Thaddeus Gibson for the whole thing (and the Ohio BMV seems to have pretty much cleared him from any wrongdoing).

Apparently he retweet stuff like this earlier, which was deleted later:
already dvr'd. go get em hoolz. burn OSU DOWN BABY RT @BHOOLZ I'll be on ESPN Outside the Lines at 3 p.m., and on with @finebaum at 3:35
Any ounce of credibility he had left evaporated throughout this offseason.

Re: Small had 61 catches for 659 yards and three touchdowns during his Ohio State career, which was marked by frequent suspensions and discipline. Small spent much of his OSU tenure in Tressel's doghouse for what he admitted was academic laziness. He also was suspended for two games for a violation of team rules.

and

Re: Another former Ohio State player interviewed by The Lantern, defensive back Malcolm Jenkins, said Ohio State told players about NCAA rules, and if the rules were broken, it was the players' fault.

and

Re: Small said the players would have been foolish to turn down the discounted tattoos. ''If you go in and try to get a tattoo, and somebody is like 'Do you want 50 percent off this tattoo?' You're going to say, 'Heck yeah,''' Small said.

and

Re: Records show he is enrolled at OSU and is listed as a sociology major.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Small had so much potential. Basically he only has himself to blame for not fully developing into the football player (and/or person) he could have been.

2. However, Tressel must have done something right, Small who didn't care about academics while on the football team, is now back in school working towards a degree.

Can we put vbets on the scUM/tOSU game for 2011 yet??

My co-workers here in whore town are high-fiving each other because for some reason they believe that now it will be easy for Hoke to beat the Buckeyes, when actually, like the players tweeted over the Ray Small accusations, they will be more hell-bent on winning every game this year.

Looking forward to August 12th, just to get this over with and move on to winning some football games.

Go Bucks!

p.s. I just donated - give me my banner!!!!

Well Ryan Hamby did get death threats after dropping a TD in the Texas game. I have read this banter with ORD the last few pages, and I have to say that I also experienced something similar during my time in Columbus, though I don't think my personal experience necessarily extends to all he is saying. I love the Blue Jackets and I love the Crew, but Columbus in general is a one trick sports pony, which is why none of the big 3 sports will ever put a pro team there. Hell even the men's basketball team can't catch a break or generate the kind of support one would expect when they are mowing down the Big Ten. I don't think it's necessarily a healthy relationship either. I would be more akin to liken it to Norman, OK perhaps, where they ran into similar problems not that long ago. I don't know, it's hard to describe, but there were elements of it that did seem unhealthy.

That said, I had fun living in Chicagoland too, but there were aspects of that which sucked balls too. Or maybe I just ran into too many Cubs fans.

This is a pretty good example of why we don't do player tweets on here:

http://twitter.com/#!/ZackMeisel

Meisel is the reporter of the Lantern expose, and his twitter is dominated by retweeting people who think he's awesome (after a post saying he's not out for self promotion) and retweeting personal attacks on him. Even as a media member, the situation gets out of control quickly.

Of course, some of that is earned when you claim Ray Small has no axe to grind nor any reason to lie. Perhaps he wasn't on campus with Ray, but with one player interview it would be clear why those are dangerous and flawed assumptions to make.

One thing I DID find disruptive in the ESPN article was where Mark Titus said you'd have to be blind not to see that the FB players were gettin' bennies... Kinda wish that hadn't been said like that.

Yeah and Titus has been getting blasted on every social media outlet by fans/students/players/etc...
