Speculation on teh Twitters by Staples, Mandel, et. al. is noting that the NCAA is asking about the B10 TV deal which is a precursor to consideration of a TV ban due to the 'repeat offender' thing.

Ooof.

you really can't do a TV ban these days. That would be great for Nebraska fans that their first game against tOSU in the Big 10 is not on television.

You can fine the school for their share of TV revenue though.

And it would hurt the fans... not sure the NCAA should even be considering this route. Anything else is fair game, in my opinion. But to go that far with it, I'd been done with college athletics.

Someone shed some light for me, who knows more about this than I do. What's this report that Tress contacted the FBI. if that in fact is true, what if the FBI told him to keep hush about the situation for the FBI investigation. If that happened, hypothetically, what would be the outcome of that. NCAA lessen penalty, etc?
someone already said the agent he contacted claims Tress didn't mention any of this. The agent was a players dad or something. It's a page back

Relevant excerpt from Ken Gordon's story (Dispatch):

http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten...5/0425-more-emails-from-tressel-released.html

Four days later, a call was placed from Tressel's office phone to the home of FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas of Columbus. The call lasted less than a minute. Trombitas' son, Matt, is a former walk-on quarterback who was on the roster of Tressel's 2002 national championship team.

The next night, Trombitas called Tressel on his cell phone and they spoke for five minutes, records show. Trombitas told The Dispatch that the call "wasn't related to anything like the situation that came out in the media."

Trombitas said he believed the call involved Tressel seeking information on behalf of a "friend of the coach or a former player who knew of a kid interested in (a career with) the FBI."

Trombitas said he and the coach never discussed the situation underlying the NCAA violations leading to the school's proposed five-game suspensions for Tressel and five players. Ohio State and its coach face possible NCAA sanctions for ethical misconduct and allowing potentially ineligible players to compete.

They have a TV ban in the quiver, but they won't use it.

If that shit happens, there will be a lot of very, very pissed off fans around the country, my entire family included. Hurt the team, but don't hurt the fans directly. A TV ban, while I can kind of see the point of depriving the athletic department of that profit, is directly hurting the fans of the program, as well as outside businesses. In addition, that is practically condemning the athletic department in this day and age, as well as the Big Ten as a conference, depending upon how they would construct the TV ban. A TV ban would kill not only the football team, but it would also likely do a ton of harm to the entire athletic department.

Punish the team, punish the coaches, but they sure as hell better not overstep bounds to directly punishing the fans, other businesses, and the entire athletic department. A bowl ban is one thing. That money is gravy/icing on the cake.

EDIT: Knowing the kind of ratings (and therefore cash cow) that tOSU is, I would bet ESPN (and FOX, etc.) would be pounding the NCAA's ass if they think a TV ban is even a slight possibility. Not to save tOSU of course, but to protect their investment, and make the NCAA realize what it would mean for the NCAA as well if they would like to make that TV ban a reality.

My understanding of a TV ban was that it was about punishing the program by depriving it of exposure, not punishing the athletic department by depriving it of revenue. In other words, recruits won't want to come play for a team that isn't on tv.

I don't know how many more facts have to come out before people begin to take this episode at face value. Tressel made a series of poor decisions that violated the letter and spirit of NCAA bylaws, and now he and the program are going to pay for it. As a fan, I feel like I'll be able to enjoy the upcoming season a little more if I focus on coming to terms with the facts rather than looking for little ways for part of it to not be true.

Since the Notice of Allegations didn't even include the 'Failure to Monitor' charge, I can't imagine the NCAA using any type of TV ban.

The players are being punished for receiving the improper benefits.

JT will be punished for not being forthcoming about what he knew about the situation.

tOSU, as an athletic department or University, isn't being charged doing something seriously wrong. The violations were by the players and JT, so that's where the majority of the punishment should fall. Hopefully that's the case.

Agreed. Somehow it seems like the punishment might end up being a bit more harsh for JT.

Yeah, but today, you can't do that without doing the other (and having a dramatic negative effect on the entire department, given how much funding comes from that). Not to mention royally pissing off fans of the school around the country, as well as 11 other schools. Oh, and then there is the fact that you are now pissing in FOX and ESPN's cheerios in a kind of major way, and the conference's money-pool as well.

A TV ban would be one of the stupidest things the NCAA could do. That would hasten its destruction faster than an a-bomb if they had the balls to do it.

A TV ban is the one place I see that has too many innocent victims...mainly networks and advertisers, all of whom commit big money. I don't see how the NCAA could say a TV ban targets the school...they'll still sell out their tickets, and in fact tickets would be in more demand if people can't watch on TV...so that doesn't really make a lot of sense.

If they are truly asking about information on TV deals, that would indicate they are at least thinking about it. I give it 2 days or less until they drop that consideration completely as the result of ESPN, FOX, and the B10 pounding their ass.

My thoughts....and they mean nothing

NCAA comes out and vacates 2010, Bans Tress from more coaching duties...ie recruiting and or more games suspended etc possibly for the year. Trying to show they are tuff on offenders while not messing with the entire program. Bigger story developes in the next two months with another program, massive overhaul of rules and punishments ensues over next two years
