Ohio State receiver Ray Small
Small?s grade is always changing in a career that has constantly seen him move in and out of Jim Tressel?s doghouse. Saturday, the Cleveland native was really involved in the offense for the first time this season as the No. 4 receiver, catching two passes for 47 yards.
?I was real surprised. But I was ready for it at the same time,? Small said. ?To be still here at Ohio State is a big thing for me, and for me to be playing is even better. It was a beautiful thing. If I wouldn?t have played, I probably would have been a little upset, but that?s just how things go. We?ve got a great receiving corps, so whoever?s out there is the best.?
Small missed the start of preseason camp while getting summer school grades sorted out, after being suspended for two games last season.
?I?m getting older and me and Coach Tressel talked a lot about that situation and basically we?re working on it,? Small said. ?I?m going to go out and practice hard and do what I have to do.?
But he missed the Navy opener with what he and Tressel said was an illness, though Small knows some people thought it was another episode in his football drama.
?Yeah, but there?s nothing I could have done about it. I got a little name out there or whatever, but I try not to listen to that,? Small said. ?I try to let it go in one ear and out the other, because I know what?s going on with Ray Small. Nobody else does.?
And if he?s playing, and contributing, then things must be OK, at least for now.
?It?s all the proof you need, man,? Small said. ?Because if I was such a bad person, I wouldn?t be at Ohio State.?
