WR Ray Small (official thread)

Small's return: Senior receiver Ray Small of Glenville appreciated the playing time he saw at receiver last Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Tressel said Small will work as the No. 3 receiver this week, after Duron Carter had been the choice in three-receiver formations for most of the first three games. The promotion, following a demotion when Small missed the start of preseason camp because of academic issues, is just another chapter in the receiver's uneven OSU career.

"I can't be more pleased in him having some success on the field, and hopefully, it continues and I think it will," said Hazell, Small's receivers coach.

Hazell believes Small's speed opens more throwing lanes. "He has worked tremendously hard the last two weeks, and he can help us," Hazell said.

I saw in another receiver's thread that some are expecting a break-out game this Saturday.

I have one of those feelings too - but I believe it is Ray Small who will have the career day on Saturday. It's one of those feelings you get that are vaguely based on the experience of having followed teams for many years and having seen this before, but you're not sure where.

Having said that, Illinois defensive backfield strikes me as vulnerable to Ray's skill set. Putting together the vague impression and my opinion of the match-up; I'm calling it. Ray is going to have a big day on Saturday.

His routes have been very sharp, and you can see his focus on special teams. Sometimes when we say a player is due, it might derive from simple fandom hope. Other times we get these 'vague feelings' that you describe because we can view the player doing the little things that can possibly build to what can be called a very solid or breakout game. You see these qualities, Coach Hazell sees these qualities...so yes!..I hope your feeling comes true because Ray is indeed due. His skill set can compliment Dane & DeVier. So they have a poor pass D huh? Maybe this can end up like Bloomington 2003 when 'tone broke out, or 2005 IL when Troy had all day to throw to Holmes and Ginn.. :)

Anyways, this is it Raymond..Carpe diem my Senior friend..

Having had the game that they had last week (both Dane and DeVier), it would seem like a good game plan to exploit another WR this week. They can still contribute, but Ray can be explosive and I look to see him taking one to the house. Mixing it up among all the WRs should keep us better balanced and keep the Illini DBs on their heels.

He has had issues before with dropping punts, but he seems to have started dancing alot more than before. It really is unfortunate that he can't ever seem to take full advantage of opportunities. i hope he can put it all together but if not it may be a good time to check Lamar or someone else back there.

To be honest, Southern Cal, Toledo, and Illinois are all terrible punting teams. O'Malley (SC) and Claus (Toledo) are among the seven worst ranked punters according to the NCAA site, and Santella (IL) is in the bottom twenty.

The previous three opponents didn't exactly "outkick the coverage." Ray will be helped once OSU finally faces a team that has a punter physically capable of punting a football further than 38 yards. Fewer catches in heavy traffic should give him the chance to attack with some speed and run by people.

All well and good, but not fair-catching that one last weekend is unacceptable. If nothing else, let the punt team D down the ball. Still OSU's possession.

I doubt I was the only one on here who saw it coming, and hoped that the TV camera just missed him waving his arms every direction, but we knew better. Good teams turn that into 7 without missing a beat.

I know Ray is electric when he gets started, but getting him started seems harder and harder to do.

I will eat my words when Ray wins us a game this year with his special talents, but picking which game that is going to be is impossible right now.

Completely untrue. I'm going to call it every week until I'm right.

Ray blows up HUGE this week.

I'm sorry, but what evidence do we have from Ray's career that leads us to believe he is going to 'blow up'? I read a lot of stuff over the summer about how "Ray needs to get his act together if he wants to have a shot at an NFL career...". Really? NFL? Look, I hope Ray has his act together, too, and I hope he is a contributing member of the OSU football team. But the bottomline is that he is undersized, doesn't break tackles, and is usually a peripheral player--not a game changer and not NFL-type talent. I'm not bashing the kid here. But let's just accept him for what he is, a backup slot receiver and stop expecting the Teddy Ginn comparisons to come to fruition.
