WR Ray Small (official thread)

I'm hoping Ray brings it to the table this week too. He has a competitive heart and it will show real soon. You just have to fight thru your own mistakes at times and hang inthere. Remember - Good things come to those who wait. Patience is a Virtue.

I had a good feeling about Ray this week and he proved me right. He sure looked like the weight of the world was lifted off his back with that kick return for a TD. Way to go Ray Small.

OSU notebook: Return extra sweet for Small

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For once, Ray Small did not have to worry about penalties.

The Ohio State receiver and kick returner has had to overcome a series of self-inflicted wounds in his career, spending significant time in coach Jim Tressel's doghouse, mostly for academic issues.

But he also keeps coming back from his troubles and making an impact.

Yesterday against Wisconsin, he fielded a kickoff at the 4-yard line, shot through a big hole up the middle and raced untouched 96 yards for a touchdown in OSU's 31-13 victory.

"When I passed the goal line, I looked back to see if there were any flags," Small said. "There were no flags, and then I just let all my frustration out. I had been holding all that back, but hopefully as the season goes on, the roads get clearer."

Talent has never been the issue with Small, a senior from Cleveland Glenville. But his potential has never been fully realized because of the string of issues, including a two-game suspension last season and missing the beginning of preseason camp this year.

He said he considered quitting at times and pondered leaving for the NFL after last season.

That made yesterday's TD, just the fifth of his career and his first on a kickoff return, all the more sweet.

"It was a great thing for him and a great lesson on perseverance and hanging in there and figuring it out," coach Jim Tressel said. "You hope if you keep working, good things will happen."

Loved, loved, loved his TD return today...no dancing around, just explosion and...GONE!

Very nice Ray!

Absolutely....Ray has been through a lot throughout his time here, and I was very happy to see him get to showcase his talent with that TD return. What I also enjoyed watching was the celebration after....it shows how closely knit this team is. The team was there in the end zone celebrating the moment with Ray. They care for him and want him on the football field.

Hmmm....cant put my finger on it, but his return today reminded me of a returner we had a few years back - wore #7, went to G-Ville as well...hmmm...what - was - his - name?..

Good job today by Small. He needed the solid return for his own ego more so than the team. With the lack of production at receiver and off field issues, the kid was in need of a "pick me up" to pick up his swagger.

Its not the OSU career he dreamed of, but he could go out with a bang. keep it up Ray!
