WR Ray Small (official thread)

Jardy would. Still an ass.

Where would you rather he got his info on the situation? Ken Small hasn't exactly been the greatest PR guy but I don't think the guy just makes stuff up...I think he goes by what he and his son expect the outcome to be.

I just was looking for an excuse to take a shot a Jardy - and I would rather Jardy wait to see what happens with Small then calling up Ken. Why? Because you're absolutley right, he is not the greatest PR guy. Jardy is trying to make news, let's just wait and see what happens with Small.

I, for one, am not "done" with Ray like many others posting in this form. I'm looking forward to a solid senior season from him.

They gave a smirking and nameless Vulvarine an opportunity to pour derision on Ray Small ("yeah he's not with the team and I'm not surprised it's about Academics") - they were pushing the theme that this was a big (possibly season long like Moeller) loss for the Buckeyes.

Quite different from what is being reported elsewhere - and here.

Prove all the naysayers wrong Ray.

I for one hope Ray gets his grades in order and puts it all together for a breakout senior season. Over the years this kid has shown us some flashes of brilliance but off the field problems, albeit mostly of his own making, have kept him from being able to become the player he is clearly capable of being.

To the naysayers, how many of us haven't made a mistake? How's the saying go? He free of guilt shall cast the first stone? I doubt any of us will be lining up with those stones. Or to put it in another perspective, how would things be if we gave up on another Glenville grad who made some questionable decisions during his Buckeye career? Well, the trophy case at the WHC would have one less piece of hardware for starters. And I doubt we would have that 5 game winning streak.

Point is, no matter what happens with Ray he is and always will be a Buckeye. He went to class, he practiced and he donned the Scarlet and Gray on fall Saturday's. And maybe he didn't give us as many highlight reel plays as we may have hoped, but he gave us some.

And that should be more than enough. But I hope the final chapter is yet to be written.

Eh I wouldn't go that far...

But I second wanting to see the last chapter written because it could be the best one for him if he can get it done.

Remember, if he didn't go to class we wouldn't be having any of this discussion because he would have been gone 3 years ago. There is a big difference between not going and struggling.

Not saying he didn't skip some classes, it has been clearly reported he has, but I doubt he is the only player who has ever done that. If he had missed a substantial amount of class JT would have removed him long ago.

But he obviously did miss a substantial amount of class time because he's been one of the only players in actual trouble for it consistently over the past couple of years.

I'm not trying to bash him or anything, but I just have a hard time being overly supportive of someone who may not be taking advantage of a free education when there are thousands of students here who don't have a full ride and are paying the tuition and go to class every day and put in the effort it takes to succeed. With all of the benefits and resources (both athletic-wise and academic-wise) football players have to them it shouldn't be an issue.

But again, I don't know the situation and I won't speculate. But I do want to see every player succeed in the classroom and on the field because that's what they're here for. It's a school first.

You won't speculate? That seems to be inconsistent with some earlier phrasing in your post.

Sorry for the confusion. Like I said...I don't know the situation so I'm not going to speculate. The situation that I'm referring to what's going on right now and I'm pretty sure no one really does know yet.

As for what happened in the past I think it's pretty well known there were issues with not going to class, etc., so that's not what I'm talking about when the word "speculate" is used.

Tressel moves on without absent players

By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Though he's hopeful that receiver Ray Small and defensive end Rob Rose will rejoin the team, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel made a point yesterday of saying that life is going on fine without them.

Tressel would not confirm that Small and Rose are struggling with academic issues, as various sources have said. Ray Small's father, Ken, said his son is waiting on a grade to be officially posted.

Asked about Small, Tressel said "it's possible" that he could be back soon.

Speaking about both players, he said, "You're always hopeful that people will take care of what they need to take care of and get on the page that they're capable of being."

Small's absence has more impact. Rose likely was a second-team player, and the Buckeyes still have plenty of talent at end, including Thaddeus Gibson, Nathan Williams, Cameron Heyward, Lawrence Wilson and Solomon Thomas.

At receiver, though, the Buckeyes lost 2008 starters Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline. Small clearly would be in the top three this year.

The returning group is led by junior Dane Sanzenbacher and sophomore DeVier Posey, who have combined for 44 career catches.

Lamaar Thomas and Taurian Washington are next in line. Freshman Duron Carter also has turned some heads over the summer and in the first two days of practice.

"Everybody that gets reps benefits (from Small not being here)," Tressel said. "That's the downside to not being there sometimes: out of sight, out of mind, out of game plan."
