WR Ray Small (official thread)

I don't think that has a lot to do with it. He was a 5* recruit who has let his opportunity slip away... very similar to Eugene Clifford. The only difference with Small is his downfall was a slow saga that dragged out over a few seasons. I don't think the Glenville issue came in to play very much.
Exactly.. Most recruits don't have the consistently small problems that Small has had. It seems like all of his problems have been academic or work ethic.. You're not going to kick a guy off a team for being late to a team meeting.. Yet that has exactly been Small's problem. Missing a class, late for a meeting, bad grades, etc etc, all drawn out over 3 years.

Obviously you've missed the line where I said, "We shouldn't throw him away, but Tress should bench him and move on with the rest of WRs who do go to class and can still play at a high level!"! I've said several times that I hope this kid makes it offfield, but you probably skipped over those lines. Its a message board, get over yourself, where fans can state their opinions, you have yours and I have mine! The idiotic mistakes obviously haven't been in detail given to the media or fans, but they obviously have to do with his academic issues at school. If he didn't make those idiotic mistakes that I was talking about then why each week would commentators mention that Ray was in the coaches "doghouse"? Why would he have his number 4 taken away from him? I'd say because he was making idiotic mistakes! The commentary is told by the media who give us our news and each time they say this kid hasn't performed in classroom or in other activites of being a student athlete! I could care less if you give me an infraction, but many of US as well, think as I do, and are sick of this kid getting into trouble and making a mockery of his opportunity to play the Ohio State University!

The policy on not bashing Buckeyes is clear. You can state your opinions, but you can't bash Buckeyes.

I didn't miss anything, and I also won't miss you for the next 2 weeks.

The top 20 Ohio State football players for 2009: No. 15, Ray Small

OSU
Ray Small

No. 15: Senior receiver Ray Small

A guy whose status as a Buckeye seems to be constantly up in the air as the 15th-best player on a team picked to win the conference?

Yep. And Small is listed as the top guy among all the OSU receiver candidates. DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher were lower on the list, and you won't find Taurian Washington or Lamaar Thomas or true freshman Duron Carter above him.

But Small's not here because he's a receiver. He's here more as a punt returner - and also as a guy who might have the most explosive potential among the OSU receivers. Of course, potential isn't a word you typically want to use when talking about a senior.

Still, among the 23 individual statistical categories tracked by the Big Ten, a Buckeye led the way in two of them last season. One was Terrelle Pryor topping the conference in passing efficiency. The other was Small winning in punt return average, and he led by a lot, 15.2 yards per return compared to 11.9 yards for the second-best returner.

Sure, there are enough fast and elusive guys on the OSU roster for the Buckeyes to be able to find another return guy if Small isn't around. But at this point, nobody on the team puts together the experience and skill at returner that Small would offer.

And I still think he could help a good amount at receiver as a No. 3 guy, or at least splitting that job.

DE Rob Rose and WR Ray Small are not among the 103 players expected to report, team spokesperson Shelly Poe said. Both have been reportedly struggling academically. It's likely they need to do well in OSU's second summer session.

The NCAA allows teams to declare a 105-man roster that's good until the first game, then they can expand. Since 103 players are reporting, it means OSU is holding two spots open....for Moeller, Rose, Small or anyone else they wish.

What this means is that if Moeller returns soon, either Small or Rose will have to miss the first game. That's speculative right now, but still worth noting.

I think grades have been out, so I'm not sure what grades he is waiting for. I am hopeful, but not optimistic on this.

A friend and I were just discussing this. If the second session of Summer Quarter has started already, then the grades for the first session would have to be all posted.

The second session goes from 7/27 - 8/27.

That's what I'm saying...his grades should have been up from the first Summer session before July 27th. A kid in my lab group right now knew all of his grades before the 27th because some of the classes he's taking we're split between the two shorter sessions. It's usually a requirement for the professors to have their grades in before the start of the next quarter unless for any reason Ray received an "I" for incomplete which basically counts as an ambiguous grade until either academic misconduct is sorted out or if a student missed a final with a legitimate excuse.

Why Adam (inch high private eye) Jardy, continues to think Ken Small is a viable source is beyond me.

Jardy has his number on speed dial.

Ken Small opined last winter that Ray was graduating this summer unless Tressel sabotaged him.

Thereby becoming the first player in OSU history to graduate in 3 years despite his less than sterling academic profile coming out of Glenville.

Is it possible he "tested out" of a class in order to raise his GPA or attain enough credits to be eligible? I know when I played baseball at Malone College I injured my shoulder and was half a credit short of being eligible for fall practice (because I had to withdraw from a Golf Class LOL) I was able to "test out" of a class during the summer in order to gain the credit I needed to be eligible. Just a thought.
