In an attempt at pulling out of their season-long freefall, the Indianapolis Colts seemingly have tried everything and everybody.

Well, not everybody, at least not in a realistic sense.

Anthony Gonzalez waits.

The 2007 first-round draft pick could have walked out of New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday night after the Colts' historic 55-point loss, raised his hand and said, "I had nothing to do with it."

He has had little to do with anything this season and has little reason to suspect he will be used Sunday at Tennessee.

Gonzalez's contributions to the team's 0-7 start and the NFL's No. 27-ranked passing attack: zero catches. He has been targeted once.

"I'm assuming at some point I'll get an opportunity," he said Wednesday. "Whether it's now or some other time, I have no idea.

"But at some point I'll get another opportunity to play football on a Sunday. When that occurs, I truly believe I'll be better than I have ever been in my life. I honestly believe that."

Let WR Anthony Gonzalez actually catch a pass ? We go from one former first-round pick who is given every opportunity to contribute something to the mess to another guy who has been stripped of his chance to so much as catch a pass. Gonzo has been targeted only once. This, too, goes beyond stupid. The team rotates guys at every position. Starting with the Carolina game, rotate the four WRs Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Gonzalez. Yeah, all four of them. Everybody gets a breather. Everybody gets to play. And throw the ball to all of them. I don?t care if vice chairman Bill Polian doesn?t like Gonzalez, the boss made the decision to keep him for what I?m told now was about $2 million. So play him. If this team is going to have any chance to win at least one game, it must be able to pass the football. Without it, teams load up and eventually stop the run. Football 101.

Which brings us to one more sticking point I will beat into the ground a final time, then must let go. Yes, it involves another one of my fave guys, WR Anthony Gonzalez. This season for the former first-round pick amounted to being targeted on just two passes. The first, he was held with no call against Kansas City. The second, the ball was thrown behind him and he barely got his hands on it. I?m guessing he would say he should have caught it anyway, but the bigger point here is why did the Polians pay the guy the final year of his contract, like almost $2 million, when they had no intention of using him? Seriously? And then someone with the team has the nerve to go up to Gonzo and tell him how they appreciate him handling this like a pro? Get real. Gonzo kept quiet because he didn?t want to hurt his chances of getting a contract somewhere else. The guy pops off and is labeled a malcontent, that will scare off other teams. As if not letting the guy catch one single pass doesn?t accomplish that goal enough. I don?t buy the company line that Gonzalez was hurt all the time. He was a healthy scratch more often than not. And, yes, that?s taking his word for it over the front office?s spin on the Monday radio show, but it?s not in Gonzo?s best interest to lie. It?s a contract year. He wants to play so he can get paid. It?s the oldest motivation in the book, well, the second-oldest after winning. Some will say the guy can?t play, but I?m not buying it. Don?t be surprised if he ends up somewhere else and is useful. Maybe he?ll never live up to the pick, but he sure didn?t get a fair shake in what I expect will be his last season with the Colts.

I always hear about the family atmosphere of the Colts organization around here, but it was obvious that Gonzo got totally fucking hosed this year by the Colts. I am not sure if it was the coaching staff or the front office that was the problem. He was definitely a healthy scratch for most games, which made no sense whatsoever. They could definitely have used him.

On the positive side for Gonzo is that he didn't have to deal with the horrible QB play that potentially could have gotten him seriously injured by leading him into a defender with a pass.

I believe Gonzo will find his way to a decent team via free agency and end up being a high quality player.

Colts' Gonzalez becomes latest casualty in rebuilding effort

NFL.com
Published: March 11, 2012

Continuing a purge that began last week with the release of Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts will not bring back wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Gonzalez, who was often injured in his five years with the Colts, said he took a call from the Colts on Friday in which they said he wouldn't be offered a new contract.

"It's a business. First and foremost and always, it's a business," said Gonzalez, 27. "I mean it's a sport and everything, but it always comes back to being a business."

Gonzalez has 99 catches for 1,307 yards and seven touchdowns in his career but had none in the Colts' 2-14 2011 season.

Patriots set to host ex-Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez for a visit

gonzo-catching-the-ball.jpg

The Patriots may be waiting on Rams WR Brandon Lloyd, and the situation surrounding Steelers WR Mike Wallace hasn?t quite developed yet. But they are set to bring another player at that position in for a visit, anyway.

The Patriots are slated to host ex-Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez at Gillette Stadium, according to a source close to the situation. The visit is expected to happen this weekend, with Gonzalez likely coming into town Friday.

The former Ohio State star was a first-round pick by Indianapolis in 2007, and he showed flashes of success with 57 catches in 2008. But injuries plagued the 6-foot, 193-pounder, and he never contributed much after that season.

Gonzalez added just five catches for 67 yards over the past two seasons, and he was mostly a healthy scratch in 2011. This may not be Lloyd or Wallace, but Gonzalez seems like a low-price, low-risk option. It may work out, it may not.

But can?t hurt to bring him in and see what he has?

Patriots announce the signing of Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez, but what does it mean?

The Patriots brought in ex-Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez for a visit last night, trying to see if the former first-round still had it. We told you about it on Thursday, and it was definitely a question mark. Turns out, coach Bill Belichick liked what he saw.

The Patriots announced that they signed Gonzalez to a contract, but terms were not released. It?s a good signing, a low-risk, high-reward move that has little downside. It gives them another solid option in the slot behind Wes Welker.
