Camp Notes: Gonzalez returns to his roots
By George Bremer The Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON, Ind. ? After injuries robbed Anthony Gonzalez of much of the last two seasons, he spent the entire offseason working out at Ohio State near his home in Columbus, Ohio.
?I haven?t done that since college, and I never got hurt while I was in college,? Gonzalez said after Wednesday?s morning practice.
Gonzalez seemed to be poised for a breakout season after 57 catches for 664 yards and four touchdowns in 2008 and Marvin Harrison?s retirement in the offseason. But a knee injury in Week 1 sidelined him for the entire 2009 season, and a second knee injury limited him to five catches for 67 yards in two games last year.
He said he understands this might be his last chance with the Colts, and nobody is more frustrated than him.
?It bothers me that for the past two seasons, I?ve had to sit on the sidelines and watch my teammates and friends go out there and do what they love and what I love,? Gonzalez said. ?The best part of playing football, by far, is being able to share the team wins on the field every Sunday. That?s by far the best part. So not being able to do that has been disappointing, yeah. If other people are disappointed, I don?t know. I assure you I?m more disappointed than anybody else.?

ANDERSON, Ind. -- With so much at stake heading into what might be a career-defining fifth season with the Indianapolis Colts, there was only one place Anthony Gonzalez wanted to be this summer.
It was back home in Columbus, Ohio. The former Ohio State standout receiver determined his best opportunity to prepare for 2011 was to reacquaint himself with the trainer and training methods that helped him become the Colts' 2007 first-round draft pick.
In hindsight, it was the right choice, and one aided by the NFL's 41/2-month lockout. Unable to have any contact with teams, players had to fend for themselves.
"I had a great (summer) of training," Gonzalez said. "I went back to Ohio State and stayed there the entire offseason. I hadn't done that since college and never got hurt when I was in college."

GONZALEZ WANTS TO GO
By Craig Kelley - Colts.com
Monday, August 8 2011
ANDERSON ? Anthony Gonzalez is a heady, intelligent, dedicated and talented football player.
The Cleveland native and Ohio State product is starting his fifth year with the Colts. The first two years of his career went the way that is typical for most young players. The second two, however, have been difficult because of injuries.
It has been hard for fans of the team because they would like to see Gonzalez on the field. Sometimes, those well-wishers have been vocal in their wishes to see him on the field. It has been much, much tougher for Gonzalez because of his desire to play, and to play for some special people ? his teammates.
Gonzalez does not devote his sincerest attention to the outside. His dedicated efforts are to be on the field on Sundays when he can make a difference for the team.
?What people say, no, it does not bother me. It bothers me that for the last two seasons I have had to sit on the sidelines and watch my teammates and best friends go out there and do what they love and what I love,? said Gonzalez.
People throughout life do things that bring them personal or professional satisfaction. Gonzalez?s love of football can be seen in his meticulous approach to the game both mentally and physically. What he gets out of it the most is revealing about a person who chooses to reveal himself carefully in words.
?The best part of playing football by far is being able to share the team wins on the field every Sunday. That?s by far the best part of football,? he said. ?Not being able to do that has been disappointing. If other people are disappointed, I assure you I?m more disappointed than anyone else.?

Kravitz: HGH testing can lead to safer football

ANDERSON, Ind. -- Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez doesn't know exactly how pervasive human-growth hormone (HGH) is in the National Football League. But there are lots of times he looks around the league, looks across the line of scrimmage at a player with unnatural size and speed, and he's sure that player hasn't done it all with weightlifting and proper nutrition.
"How many guys are on it, that's hard to say," Gonzalez said. "It could be 10, it could be a hundred or more; either way, it's too much. But around the league, you see guys on Sunday, and things don't add up; they don't look right. I see guys I saw in college, now they're in the NFL and they look totally different.
"I don't know how prevalent it is at this point, but to say that it's not being used, that's wrong."
It's why Gonzalez, speaking last weekend at Colts camp, became one of the first and most ardent on-field supporters of the portion of the new collective bargaining agreement to begin HGH testing by the start of this season.
He is tired of competing on an un-level playing field.

Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez braces for possibility of being cut

Anthony Gonzalez has achieved one of his preseason objectives, just not the most critical one.
Heading into training camp last month and in the final year of his contract, the Indianapolis Colts receiver's approach was to embrace and maximize the moment.
"I told myself that as long as I'm here, I'm going to enjoy myself," Gonzalez said Tuesday. "I was going to do everything I could to help this football team. I felt I had a really good camp. The coaches expressed that."
Gonzalez leaned against a wall outside the Colts' locker room and looked at his right leg.
"It's just that I've got this little hamstring injury and they tend to linger for receivers," he said.
It's possible Gonzalez's most recent injury could be the one that ends his association with the Colts.
Rosters must be trimmed from 80 to 53 on Saturday, and there's no assurance the team's 2007 first-round draft pick will be spared.
"I understand it's a realistic possibility, probably more so this year than ever before," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez is due a 2011 base salary of $1.11 million. He counts $2.1 million against the $120.3 million salary cap. Releasing him would free up nearly $1 million in cap space.
Money, though, likely would be a secondary factor.
"I think (it would be) because of the injuries," Gonzalez said. "My No. 1 goal coming into camp was not missing practice or a game. Obviously that hasn't happened. That's been pretty disappointing."
Coach Jim Caldwell, talking in generalities and not about Gonzalez's situation, recalled one of former coach Tony Dungy's adages when it came to making difficult roster decisions.
"The most important ability is availability," Caldwell said. "It's a long haul. It's a tough season. You want to try to put the best individuals in place to withstand that."
Availability has been Gonzalez's problem.
After having 94 receptions for 1,240 yards and seven touchdowns and missing only three games in his first two seasons, he has been limited by knee and ankle injuries to three games and five catches the past two years.
That magnified the need for a healthy 2011.
Gonzalez saw action in the preseason opener at St. Louis, but suffered an injury to his right hamstring shortly thereafter. He's been in rehab mode ever since. Sunday and Monday, that meant a total of about eight hours of "manual therapy, deep-tissue work, alignment stuff," Gonzalez said. "I've been treating it pretty good, but you've got to be careful."
Yet the final cut looms. It's a time when tough decisions must be made, and everything -- a player's injury history, his cap hit, the makeup of the roster -- must be considered.
The uncertainty surrounding Peyton Manning's availability could further complicate matters. Instead of carrying the normal two quarterbacks, the team likely will keep three, which means losing a spot at another position.
"I totally understand and appreciate the difficulties they have putting the roster together and making sure that it looks and performs how it's supposed to. I get that," Gonzalez said. "That's the business side of the game.
"When cuts come down, I hope more than anything I'm still on this roster. If not, I'll still be rehabbing, getting ready and you go from there. I'm certainly not going to quit."
Asked if he has received any indication from the coaching staff or management of what's to come, Gonzalez shook his head.
"No. I'm sure everyone's frustrated," he said. "But I promise you there's nobody more frustrated about this than I am.
"This is my livelihood. If it comes down and doesn't go my way, it certainly would be incredibly disappointing. But you move on."
Gonzalez, Painter make roster after Colts cuts
By Reggie Hayes
of The News-Sentinel
The Indianapolis Colts decided to keep wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez and quarterback Curtis Painter as they trimmed their roster to 53 players Saturday.
As good as Anthony Gonzalez felt Monday, he made no bold proclamations. He has too many scars to be reckless.
"Yeah, I'm being cautious, I guess, just because experience has shown that's probably the way I should be, but I do expect to be OK," the fifth-year wide receiver said of his prospects of playing Sunday, when the Indianapolis Colts open the regular season at Houston. "I do expect to be out there."
The Colts could use him. With Gonzalez (hamstring), Austin Collie (foot) and Blair White (back) hobbled, the team was thin at wide receiver throughout the preseason. Gonzalez and Collie missed three games, White all four.
Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon are the only other wide receivers on the roster.
The game-day status of Gonzalez, Collie and White won't be determined until later in the week, but White was removed from the physically unable to perform list last week.
"It's getting a lot better," he said. "I've been doing some strength and rehab stuff and running routes, and it feels good."
If White isn't able to play, Joe Lefeged or cornerback Jerraud Powers probably would replace him as the primary punt returner, Colts coach Jim Caldwell said.
Gonzalez is productive when healthy: 94 receptions, 1,240 yards and seven touchdowns in 2007-08. But he missed all but three regular season games the past two seasons with knee and ankle injuries.
He expects to be ready and productive again. He expressed relief at not being cut when the roster was pared from 80 to 53 last week. He's not concerned that he has had little time to work with Kerry Collins, the likely starter at quarterback.
Now Gonzalez just has to get to the starting line.
"We're trying to be smart about it," he said. "I tend when I get to the end (of injury rehabilitation) to overdo it a little bit, so we're trying to be smart about it and go step by step."
On the status of oft-injured WR Anthony Gonzalez: ?He was fairly close at Houston and I think he?ll be even closer this week. He?s going to practice. We?ll see how he does the entire week. This is the first time he?s going to get a full load of work during the course of a week. That was one of the things last week, he didn?t have the opportunity to get ramped up as much as we would have liked to determine how it was going to react once he got fatigued. He?ll get that during the course of practice this week, so we?ll have a pretty good idea whether or not he?s going to be able to go for us. And I think he will be able to.?
Notebook: Gonzalez set to return for Colts?
Oft-injured receiver is confident his hamstring is recovered and he'll be ready to play Sunday

Anthony Gonzalez expressed optimism a balky hamstring issue is behind him and he'll be available Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts host the Cleveland Browns at Lucas Oil Stadium.
"It's gone well," the veteran receiver said Thursday of his rehabilitation, "and I'm excited to hopefully get back out there."
Gonzalez then jokingly reconsidered. He recalled previous occasions when he believed he had recovered from this injury or that ailment and informed the media he was ready to return.
"That sometimes jinxes me with you guys," he said.
Gonzalez has been dealing with an injury to his right hamstring since mid-August. It kept him out of the final three preseason games and last Sunday's season opener at Houston.
The 2007 first-round draft pick returned to practice on a limited basis last week but has been full-go this week.
"I practiced (Wednesday), felt great," he said. "I was kind of curious to see how it would go, and I really do feel like it went well."
He handled another full workload Thursday, and his eagerness to return to the lineup is understandable. Knee and ankle injuries have limited Gonzalez to three games and five receptions the past two seasons.
"I'm a football player. That's what I do," Gonzalez said. "I try to play football for the Indianapolis Colts, and to not be able to do that for the last two years and then again for last week, it's frustrating. It really is.
"But I'm still standing. I can still do some things. I'm looking forward to it."

Return of 'Gonzo' to jump-start Colts?
Wide receiver has missed two seasons
By Reggie Hayes of The News-Sentinel
INDIANAPOLIS ?Anthony Gonzalez stands as the near-perfect player to snap the Indianapolis Colts out of their bad dream.
No one has been waiting longer to make an impact. Two years' worth of injuries have kept him out of the wide-receiver rotation, so much so that many thought Gonzalez would be cut this year when he entered the season with a hamstring issue.
He survived, largely because of his potential for making big plays.
Now, with the Colts' backs against the wall following a lopsided loss to the Houston Texans and the bigger loss of quarterback Peyton Manning, ?Gonzo? may get his chance to help spur a turnaround. The Colts (0-1) play the Cleveland Browns (0-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Gonzalez expects to play.
?With all that was swirling around our team and all the negativity and everybody saying all these terrible things about us, I really wanted to be out there with the guys and battle through that with them,? Gonzalez said. ?Not being able to do that really hurt. My thought is, I'm fortunate to be able to do it this week.
?This week is a big week for us, especially the way last week ended,? Gonzalez said. ?I'm excited. I'm ready. I hope I can help out.?

Spotlight On ... Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez
Published: Saturday, September 17, 2011
By Jodie Valade, The Plain Dealer
AP file
Recent seasons have been a struggle for former Buckeye Anthony Gonzalez as injuries have kept him out of the Colts lineup.
INDIANAPOLIS -- If Anthony Gonzalez is on the field Sunday, consider it a success. Of course, making a catch or two would be nice, too. But Gonzalez, who was born in Avon Lake and played at St. Ignatius and Ohio State, would be happy just to finally be back where he hasn't spent much time at all the past two seasons.
The receiver missed all but three games in the past two seasons because of two separate knee injuries.
He missed last week's season opener nursing a hamstring injury.
At long last, he's feeling pretty healthy, and Gonzalez hopes his return can come against his hometown Browns today.
"I'm really looking forward to this week," Gonzalez told reporters in Indianapolis. "One thing I've been trying to do is just keep a perspective about everything and to stay hungry and humble. I think I've done it to a certain degree. I'm raring to go. I'm ready."

Anthony Gonzalez Status Update: Colts WR Questionable With Groin Injury
Oct 23 by Russ Oates
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez is questionable for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, which shouldn't be a surprise given his injury history. He has no stats this season and has played in only three games.
While Gonzalez is nominally Pierre Garcon's backup, Garcon has emerged as the Colts No. 1 wide receiver, overcoming Reggie Wayne. Curtis Painter has taken a liking to Garcon, which would make it hard for Gonzalez to get many targets from Painter.
