WR Anthony Gonzalez (2005 All B1G, US Congressman)

Yep... Hope he sticks. Haven't been able to buy a Pats jersey since Vrabel (although Springs and Galloway were there for just a short bit)...

Same here. I also have a Brady anniversary jersey, but there's no way in hell I'm wearing that without a paper bag. As long as Gonzo stays healthy, he definitely has the talent to be a long term starter.

Why Anthony Gonzalez is clearly ready for the Patriots ? Bernard Pollard alert!

Gonzo chasedThe Patriots took a small chance yesterday with a possibly high reward when they signed ex-Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez. Injury-plagued over the course of his career, Gonzalez will be a sound slot weapon if he?s physically able. He?ll also give the Patriots insurance in case Wes Welker sits out because of the franchise tag.

From what I hear about Gonzalez, he?s the perfect Patriots player. Hard-nosed, tough, smart, a good teammate ? sounds positive. But there?s one more quirky reason Gonzalez fits right in. Ready for this one?

He?s also been maimed by a cheap shot from Patriots killer Bernard Pollard. Seriously.

According to a column by ESPN?s John Clayton in November of 2010, Gonzalez?s season was ruined by a PCL injury suffered from a Pollard cheap shot. He was then playing with the Texans. Some of Gonzo?s injury issues stemmed from that hit. In Indianapolis, he was never quite able to get over all of that.

As for why that?s noteworthy, you know the story by now?

Whenever a major injury has occurred for the Patriots, it seems Pollard has been there. And as we learned before Super Bowl XLVI, he thinks being called a Patriots killer is ?fine and dandy.? OK then. And he has been involved in a lot of them.

Pollard was a member of the Chiefs in 2008 when he dove into QB Tom Brady?s knee, tearing his ACL and destroying his season. And Pollard didn?t seem that upset about it.

Of course, he was about to make the tackle on WR Wes Welker when he tore his ACL in Houston at the end of 2009. No, not his fault. But he was there.

And finally, Pollard was the one who created the #Gronkle before Super Bowl XLVI, causing a serious high-ankle sprain for TE Rob Gronkowski that limited him against the Giants. And no, Pollard didn?t feel too bad about that, either.

So? yeah. Welcome to the club, Gonzo!

AFC South view on Gonzalez
March, 19, 2012
By Mike Reiss

When we shared the AFC West view of the Patriots' agreement with Raiders defensive end Trevor Scott, it seemed to be received well by commenters. So that led us to the AFC South view of the Patriots' signing of receiver Anthony Gonzalez, with ESPN.com AFC South reporter Paul Kuharsky:

"It was hard to object to the decision to draft Gonzalez [in 2007]. Bill Polian saw the end nearing for Marvin Harrison and knew Reggie Wayne was slow-starting. The Colts needed to have at least three quality receivers and the Gonzalez pick was an attempt to beef up the stable of weapons for Peyton Manning.

"Gonzalez came in as a quintessential Colts weapon: Precise, smart, crafty. His work in the first few years showed he knew how to get open and be in the right spots for Manning. He was typecast by some as a slot guy, but when healthy he showed he could line up outside. Manning and Gonzalez are close -- Gonzalez caddied for him at a celebrity golf tournament at one point. I don't think one develops such a friendship if the quarterback doesn't find the receiver trustworthy.

"But Gonzalez was undone by injuries, and then last season, though he was dinged early, he only played in eight games. In the team's final four games, he was inactive twice and dressed but didn't play in another game. At that point it was far more about being in the doghouse of Polian or Jim Caldwell and his staff, or both, than it was about being hurt.

"I think he's a high-risk, high-reward guy now for the Patriots. I imagine they aren't paying him a great deal, and if he's healthy he can re-emerge in a way that could make them look like geniuses. Or he can pull a hamstring during OTAs, set off a string of injuries and hardly see the field."

Gonzalez contract details
March, 19, 2012
By Mike Reiss

The contract signed by receiver Anthony Gonzalez is a one-year pact with a base salary of $701,000.

The deal includes a $15,000 workout bonus, and a split in the event of injury at $368,000.

When a player signs a contract with an injury split (what a team pays a player in the event of landing on injured reserve), it usually highlights an injury concern. Gonzalez' recent injury history was detailed by ESPNBoston's Mike Rodak.

As expected, this contract highlights that Gonzalez is a low-risk financial gamble for the Patriots.

The Anthony Gonzalez injury file
March, 17, 2012
By Mike Rodak

When the Patriots signed 27-year old receiver Anthony Gonzalez on Saturday, it was undoubtedly a small-money, low-risk signing for a player whose injury history rivals or exceeds that of any other NFL player in recent years.

Here's a look at the medical log for the 32nd overall pick in the 2007 draft, who began his career as possibly the next favorite target for Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, but had since reached the end of the road in Indianapolis:

November 2007: Misses two games after dislocating his left thumb in Week 9 vs. New England.
December 2007: Misses regular season finale after suffering a bruised foot in Week 16 vs. Houston.
Finishes 2007 season with 13 games played (nine starts), 37 catches for 576 yards, and three touchdowns.
Finishes 2008 season with 16 games played (two starts), 57 catches for 664 yards, and four touchdowns, but is listed with shoulder, hamstring, and hip injuries, as well as a concussion at various points in the season.
June 2009: Misses practice in minicamp after suffering right leg injury.
August 2009: Misses preseason opener with hamstring injury.
September 13, 2009: Suffers PCL injury in right knee in regular season opener vs. Jacksonville. Does not play again in 2009; undergoes arthroscopic knee surgery in November 2009 and is placed on injured reserve on December 24, 2009.
June 2010: Misses minicamp action with hamstring injury.
September 2010: Listed as questionable for Colts regular season opener with back injury.
September 12, 2010: Suffers high right ankle sprain in regular season opener vs. Houston. Misses next five games.
November 1, 2010: Returns to action in Week 8 vs. Houston, making four catches for 55 yards before suffering a torn PCL in his left knee on a questionable hit by Texans safety Bernard Pollard. Placed on injured reserve on November 6, 2010.
Finishes 2010 season with five catches for 67 yards.
Finishes 2011 season with eight games played (all as a reserve), with no catches, and is listed with hamstring and groin injuries, as well as an illness, at various points in the season.

Patriots WR Anthony Gonzalez has a fan in his former Ohio State offensive coordinator

untitled9.bmp

One of the wildcards of the receiving corps going forward is newly signed Anthony Gonzalez. Once a promising prospect who turned in an eye-opening rookie season with Peyton Manning and the Colts, Gonzalez?s career has been derailed by injuries the past three seasons.

Jim Bollman, Boston College?s offensive line coach, had the benefit of a healthy Gonzalez when he coached him at Ohio State. He was the offensive coordinator of the Buckeyes when Gonzalez was there. Bollman was kind enough to stop for a chat during BC?s Pro Day last week and share his thoughts on his former receiver, which was part of my NFL Notes package today.

Bollman wasn?t shy boasting about Gonzalez, who played for a Buckeye offense that also featured Santonio Holmes, Roy Hall and Ted Ginn Jr..

?He made a lot of big plays for us at Ohio State in a lot of big games,? said Bollman. ??He was always a clutch performer. He was a guy that was a very good route runner and a very intelligent player. And I think you saw, all that came to fruition when he came into the league as a rookie with the Colts. He really contributed a lot his first year in Indianapolis. He was able to adapt to that system quickly and adjust to that.?

Gonzalez?s rookie year was certainly a good one, as he caught 37 passes for 576 yards and 3 TDs. Then injuries pretty much took him off the map.

?I don?t know what caused his injury situation. I haven?t spoken to him about that. He?s had a spell of disruptive injuries,? Bollman said. ?Hopefully he can come back and be what he wants to be for the Patriots.?

WR Gonzalez puts injuries in the past
April 10, 2012

FOXBORO -- Anthony Gonzalez believes he's landed where he was meant to.

"This is my first time as a free agent; I didn't know what was going to happen, or how it worked," the 27-year old receiver said Tuesday at Gillette Stadium. "I've got some good friends who are very talented football players who still haven't signed on with anybody.

"It was somewhat surprising, but it was the one I was hoping to get, to be honest. When I evaluated free agency and different teams and how I thought I would fit culturally as well as from an offensive standpoint, this is one I targeted. To have the interest be mutual -- that worked out well."

A former first-round pick out of Ohio State, Gonzalez is entering his sixth season in the league. But what should have been a promising career has been ravaged by injury: a dislocated thumb; bruised foot; shoulder, hamstring, hip, knee, back, groin and "leg" ailments; a high ankle sprain; concussions. Consequently, Gonzalez has 99 catches for 1,307 yards and seven touchdowns in 40 games. He had zero receptions last season for the 2-14 Colts.

"[Those seasons] weren't how I would have hoped for them to go," he admitted. "I've learned a lot of things and going forward, that' s kind of in my past. It's a basic rule: I look forward as opposed to back. And that's the focus I'm putting on it these days."

Further prodding about his health -- from various angles -- produced little else. Gonzalez said he's one to outline his personal goals, and it seemed on Tuesday he'd already made up his mind to not discuss injury issues.

There's enough in the future to concern himself with anyway.

"I'm kind of sneaking around trying to learn as much as I can; there's kind of some goofy rules right now in terms of what you can and can't do," he smiled. "But that's kind of my focus right now with Tom, or Brian [Hoyer], or anybody, is just to learn this offesne as quickly as humanly possible. I know just from watching that it's a pretty complex, pretty involved offense. The one in Indy was too so that part of it doesn't worry me.

"I want to make sure when it's time to go out on the field and do things there's no hesitancy mentally because I know if I don't know exactly what I'm doing, there's going to be problems for me. It's a lot harder to play when you don't know what you're doing."

Gonzalez glad he landed here
By Shalise Manza Young
Globe Staff / April 11, 2012

FOXBOROUGH - Before he became a free agent for the first time, former Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez did a little bit of research and determined that he?d be a great fit with the Patriots.

Lo and behold, the Patriots had some similar thoughts.

The 27-year old Gonzalez is one of several offensive skill players New England has signed since the start of free agency, joining a now-stocked group at his position.

?I?m excited to be here,?? said Gonzalez. ?It?s probably the best professional football environment there is, so I?m excited for the opportunity. I love the East Coast, I love this part of the country. I?m happy and just glad for the opportunity.??

Among the reasons Gonzalez gave for targeting New England were the team culture, winning history, and offense.

?The success part, for sure,?? he said. ?That speaks for itself. Just being in the NFL and being on the other side of that rivalry for a while - there?s not a hatred or anything, it?s more of a respect.

?As you learn more about the teams you?re playing, especially this one, you kind of get an appreciation for how they do things. Just the way the [organization is] run and that sort of thing, to me it?s the perfect fit in a lot of ways.??

Anthony Gonzalez sticks with success
By Karen Guregian
Wednesday, April 11, 2012

FOXBORO ? Listening to Anthony Gonzalez, it?s easy to see why he?d be knocking on Bill Belichick?s door during free agency.

After all, once you?ve been a part of a Super Bowl contending team, and played for a future Hall of Fame quarterback like Peyton Manning, it?s hard not to want more of the same.

That was the wide receiver?s mindset as he hit the open market for the first time in his career. Having been with the Colts for five seasons and caught passes from Manning, he didn?t want to stray too far from that winning formula. Plus, having participated in the Pats-Colts rivalry first-hand, he had a pretty good idea what he?d be getting into if the Patriots [team stats] would have him.

?Why the Patriots? The success part, for sure. That speaks for itself,? Gonzalez said yesterday on the Gillette Stadium field after working out. ?Just being in the NFL and being on the other side of that rivalry for a while, there?s not a hatred or anything. It?s more of a respect. As you learn more about the teams you?re playing, especially this one, you kind of get an appreciation for how they do things. Just the way it?s run and that sort of thing. To me, it?s the perfect fit in a lot of ways.??

From the championship mentality, to the future Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Tom Brady [stats] and Manning at the controls, there was a constant there for Gonzalez, the Ohio State product.

?I was joking with my friends. I have a very strict Hall of Famer only policy,? he said. ?Just stay with that group. It?s good. It?s wonderful, obviously. Quarterbacks make receivers look very good, and hopefully I can get some opportunities with him (Brady). I?m really just looking forward to everybody getting back in. Once we can get with the coaches and get the offense going and things like that, that?s my focus.??

Q. Hey Mike, how would you project the Pats depth chart at wide receiver will look in Week 1 with the additions of Lloyd, Stallworth, Gonzalez and Gaffney. And the re-signing of Deion Branch, while also considering Wes Welker possibly withholding his services? -- Stephen (Dracut, Mass.)

A. Stephen, assuming good health for all, this is how I'd project the receiver depth chart in Week 1:

Wes Welker (I think he'll be there)
Brandon Lloyd
Jabar Gaffney
Deion Branch
Julian Edelman
Matthew Slater

This makes tough cuts of Donte' Stallworth, Chad Ochocinco and Anthony Gonzalez, and puts seventh-round pick Jeremy Ebert on the practice squad.

http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/7904495/new-england-patriots-mailbag-how-new-guys-fit-in

The Patriots receiving logjam -- They say there's power in numbers, but this is getting ridiculous. Even should designated franchise player Wes Welker remain unsigned and stay away from the team's June minicamp, I'm pretty sure New England will have more than enough pass-catchers to conduct practices.

Last week the Patriots added old friend Jabar Gaffney to the mob at wideout, where he'll compete for a roster spot with the likes of fellow free-agent signings Brandon Lloyd, Donte' Stallworth and Anthony Gonzalez, in addition to returnees Deion Branch, Matthew Slater, Julian Edelman, Chad Ochocinco (or is it Johnson again?), and Welker. Throw in seventh-round pick Jeremy Ebert of Northwestern and you have a 10-man camp receiving contingent that's going to ensure a few very familiar names show up on the cut list come early September.

And I seem to remember New England likes to get the ball to its tight ends once in a while, too. Joseph Addai signing or not, it shapes up as a pass-happy preseason in Foxboro.
