William Buford Chasing the Scoring Record Tracker

as each game passes it is going to be even harder for Buford to maintain a 18-20 point a game average in conference play. As the graphic shows, even w/ a decent OSU tourney run, 19 a game is what he'll need to break the record. Can't have many single digit (off nights) nights or he'll need to explode for 25-30 in a few others. I'd hate to see the chase become a distraction either. At times he seems too unselfish and @ others he continues to take ill-advised shots not w/in the scope of the offense that lead me to believe he is thinking about the record and padding stats. In the end, I see him finishing his career ahead of Herb but not quite catching Hopson. That would be a great career to say the least.

GO BUCKS!!!!

One thing that has hurt WB's scoring at times has been the competition - blowout wins means less minutes for him, plus he tends to be less sharp shooting the ball against the lesser teams. I think as the Big Ten season wears on, he's going to start having more 20+ point games.

Even though I started and maintain this thread, I think it was an outside shot for him to get the record. I think there is a very high possibility he reaches 1900+ points and climbs to #4 or 5 on the list with an outside shot at being the 3rd Buckeye to score 2000 points. If he continues at his current pace (15.31 ppg) he'll add 229 points by the end of the regular season... that puts him just over 1900 points (1907) so I think getting 2000 points will depend on how deep the Buckeyes go in both the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.

A few more numbers...

The Bucks have 11 regular season games left. If Buford averages 15 (his current average) he'll add another 165 points and bring his total up to 1,893... #5 on the list ahead of Michael Redd and Jim Jackson.

If Buford continues at a 15 point pace he'll need another 8 games (7.13 is the exact number) to get to 2,000 points... that's 3 in the Big Ten tourney and going to the Final Four in the NCAA tourney.

If the Bucks get to both championship games he'll probably end up #2 on the list. He doesn't have much of a shot at #1 anymore, unless he averages 18.4 points from Penn State on Wednesday to the National Championship game.

You're exactly right, doesn't look like he'll get the record. Too many really low scoring games, especially this mini slump the past month.

Either way, a top 5 finish will be great, a GREAT career for Will in my opinion. It was fun to follow this thread though during the season.

Game 21: Penn State
Game Points: 15
Season Points: 319
Scoring average: 15.19
Total Points: 1,743

Still #8. He is 13 points behind #7 Jay Burson. If he reaches his season average against the skunk bears he'll pass Mr. Burson.

This thread just passed the half way mark so it is far from over. :)

The blowouts and shooting slumps havnt helped.

Buford looks like he's shooting with more confidence now. I believe he's hit 2, 3, & 3, 3-pointers in the last 3 games.

Matta left him in later than any other starter against Penn State. I think they're both thinking about the record, and that could be the problem.

Buford needs a couple 25-35 point games in there mixed with a steady 14-18 every other game.

If we play the max 40 games, I think he still has a shot.

If he doesn't reach the record, I would at-least like to see him reach the 2,000 mark, which I think he'll do, barring an early exit in both tournaments.

Hopefully he have a similar thread for Deshaun in a couple years. If he sticks around for 4 years, he'll be right there with Buford. Deshaun could potentially put up 1200-1400 points over his Jr and Sr seasons. :oh:

I think the Texas Pan-Am (2pts) and Lamar (7 pts) games killed any chance he had of breaking the record. If he had scored 16 in each of those games, he'd be right on track - assuming the max amount of games. He needs a couple more like NW for any chance, which I think is slim at this point.
