William Buford Chasing the Scoring Record Tracker

bkochmc

Assistant Coach
I'll use this thread to see how close Mr. Buford gets to the all-time scoring record at Ohio State. Coming into the season Mr. Buford started 22nd on the list with 1,424 points and he was 672 points behind the great Dennis Hopson. That is about equivalent to the type of year Michael Redd had when he led the Buckeyes to the Final Four in 1999. Below is the list of everyone in front of him before the season started. I'll update this list as the games happen.

1. Dennis Hopson (1983-87) - 2,096
2. Herb Williams (1977-81) - 2,011
3. William Buford (2008-2012), Jerry Lucas (1959-62) - 1,990
5. Kelvin Ransey (1976-80) - 1,934
6. Michael Redd (1997-2000) - 1,879
7. Jim Jackson (1989-92) - 1,785
8. Jay Burson (1985-89) - 1,756
9. Dave Sorenson (1967-70) - 1,622
10. Perry Carter (1987-91) - 1,613
11. Robin Freeman (1953-56) - 1,597
12. Allan Hornyak (1970-73) - 1,572
13. Terence Dials (2001-06) 1,566
14. Jon Diebler (2007-11) - 1,536
15. Gary Bradds (1961-64) - 1,530
16. Tony Campbell (1980-84) - 1,529
17. Evan Turner (2007-10) - 1,517
18. Troy Taylor (1981-85) - 1,497
19. Jerry Francis (1985-89) - 1,486
20. David Lighty (2006-11) - 1,458
21. Bill Hosket (1965-68) - 1,441
22. Paul Ebert (1951-54) - 1,436

In order to get the record (673 points) William has to average:
31 games (regular season only) - 21.7 points
33 games (loss in first Big Ten conference tournament, loss in first round of post-season tournament) - 20.4 points
35 games - 19.2 points
37 games - 18.2 points
40 games (max possible... Big Ten conference tourney championship game, NCAA championship game) - 16.3 points

Thanks for doing this! I am amazed at Jerry Lucas's numbers, considering he couldn't be on the team as a freshman. Same with Robin Freeman.

And Gary Bradds, which really is two years of scoring after Lucas left.

Bradds had a six game streak in which he scored more than 40 points, averaging 44 points, set the OSU record of 49 points, and averaged 29 points a game for the two years. That boy could light them up.

Dennis Hopson was on the team as a frosh (and sophomore, of course), but most of his points came his last 2 years, after Gary Williams became our coach. Hop averaged about 7.0 ppg his first 2 years but over 20 ppg his last 2 years under Williams' up tempo style.

Glad I could help a lot of you reminisce. The earliest ones on the list that I remember watch play are Jay Burson, Perry Carter and Jim Jackson. I remember Tony Campbell by name only, just because my dad used to call him Soup (though I'm sure he wasn't the only one).

I did not realize that you were a pup but thanks for doing this. It does bring back some fond memories.

Sort of surprised Dave Sorenson is so high on the list. Played with Hosket. Took the shot that beat Kentucky at their house and send us to the Final Four.

Thanks. I wanted to follow this pursuit and you made it easy.

I have been blessed. Other than Ebert and Freeman I have seen everyone on that list play - 19 of them in person and have shaken hands with the 20th (Lucas).

Between JJ leaving in 92 and the arrival of the Lighty class in 2006, only two guys appear on this list (Redd & Dials). Four guys since then are in this list, including two from the same class. :yow1:

Well Bucky, if you expand the list a little, you will see some more players in the era between 1992 and Lighty's class. Brian Brown at 1,384 (currently #24), Brent Darby at 1,368 (#25), Jamar Butler at 1,313 (#27).

But in other words you could say Matta has coached 6 of the top-27 scorers in OSU history (22%). WB, Dials, Diebler, ET, Lighty, and Jamar.

Texas Pan Am
Game Points: 2
Season Points: 128
Scoring average: 16.0
Total Points: 1,552
Still #13. 14 points behind Terence Dials.

Very surprising Buford only scored 2 in this game. I would have figured low double digits at the very least. Oh well, I'd rather he have a game like this against TPA than against Kansas.
