If Gene Smith hires Luke Fickell as Head Coach at THE Ohio State University, one of the top 2 or 3 jobs in the country, that would be his dumbest move yet...Don't get me wrong, I love Fick as a DC, but some of the top coaches in the country would be knocking down the doors to get the job! And you don't think that Heacock had a lot to do with our defense being in the top 10? The way he handled the QB situation was absolutely horrible! I just don't see hiring an unproven head coach when you could have just about anyone you want. Even with the suspensions, Ohio State is LOADED with talent and should not be 4-3!

Loaded with talent yes, but until these talented players get enough experience to use their talent, they can hurt you as much as help you. It isn't like any of the games we lost were blowouts, either. Fickell is improving as a head coach, as he should be, considering this is his first season with the job. I know it is good to win every game, but that rarely happens.

But with no experience at the QB or WR positions. Not a good combination if you want to score a lot of points.

Exacly!

If we lost to LSU, Bama, and Auburn, I would not complain at all. Even if we win out, Fick is not ready for Ohio State! Maybe 4 or 5 years at a Big East school or a Marshall or Toledo...But not Ohio State! It takes a whole lot more to be a head coach then know defense or offense. Let's see how he would handle a smaller program for a few years before turning him loose with the reins of one of the top 3 most prestigous football programs...Fick is very young. We could go with an experienced coach for a decade and still hire Fickell while he is young. He would only be 46 but have a lot of experience under his belt.

You might want to take a closer look. Both OSU and Florida have lost to two ranked teams and 1 also-receiving-votes team, plus both have beaten 2 AQ and 2 more non-AQ teams. The only reason Florida's SoS might be slightly stronger is because they lost to the top-2 teams in CFB, but there's no reason to believe their record would be better with Nebraska and MSU in there instead.

If we win out, it would be difficult to fire a coach who just beat TSUN, won the B1G and the Rose Bowl, but I find it highly unlikely that we will win out AND win both post-season games. Fickell has shown his inexperience multiple times already, he is just not the right fit right now, in my IMO.

But he will have FBS head coaching experience at the end of the season. I understand your point about inexperience, but that applies less and less the more games he coaches. You have to look at how he progresses and draw the conclusion at the end of the season. It's too late at this point to discount him simply because of early inexperience.

That's why they play the games.

We've also seen much less likely occurrences.

After a 7-5 opening season and an Outback Bowl loss, no one would have predicted that a coach from I-AA, perceived in many quarters to be out of his depth at OSU, would coach the first 14-0 team in college football history and win a national title by beating what had been the best team in the country for two seasons.

(Okay, there was one poster on Bucknuts back in the day who had something like "2002 - Drive to the Desert" in his sig, so one guy.)

I forget. He also won some games before coming to OSU, right?

If Ohio State wins out he will have truely pulled off an amazing turn around...loaded with young talent yes...Urban had tons of young talent when he went 7-5 and how the fk does Texas win 5 games last year...give me a break he was handed a team mired in scandle losing key players, with a staff he did not put together.....I feel like some folks just started following Ohio State right around 2002
