I do not believe we put the players in the best situations to make plays by our defensive scheme and alignment. When you are playing cover 2 and need to collision the receiver, it is harder to do 5 yards off vs in the receivers jock. As many times as I have seen multiple DBs play the man vs the ball and never turn their head at all makes me think they are being coached to play that way. There were just too many times I saw that happen for it to be merely the player making a mistake by not reading the receivers eyes.
You just can't line up the way did on several occasions and expect success on defense. One of the ichigan TDs comes to mind when we had no one outside of the RE, sure enough a simple toss sweep and the back walked in from about 12 yards out. As soon as we lined up I started shouting at the tv before the ball was even snapped "you can't line up like that" and there they went. Maybe it was a blown assignment? Maybe not since I saw it more than once during the season. Same with the TDs on the goal line where receivers were more than WAO, no one within 20 yards of them at times like Clemson and ichigan. Definitely blown assignments there, we had to be in man, which means 5 guys need to be accounted for by our defense and we only accounted for 4. The only reason I can think of is lack of communication and lack of preparation. The Clemson receiver went in motion for crying out loud. It wasn't like it was the TE faking a block and laying on the ground then getting up to catch the throw back.
We do not give our athletes the best chance to make plays, and I would suggest we actually do the opposite and put them in situations were it is nearly impossible to make a play. We played off so far all season every team we played just flooded the flat or threw a hitch screen that went for 5 yards or more. It was embarrassing to me.
We didn't exactly play the toughest schedule in the country and we ranked what 110 in the nation vs the pass? Do we really have the 110th ranked talent in the nation back there with two kids that will be 1st rounders, Roby and Shazier.
