the only guy i know on tour who signs as many autographs as jack nicklaus used to is phil mickelson. he's by no means a bad guy. also, that thing about him not playing in the memorial because it is too hard is not very believable to me. it was not a direct quote, and i can't find anything else on it. it had a lot more to do with his wife being diagnosed with cancer a week and half prior, IMO.

I agree. He may be a bit phoney but he's not any more of a prick than anyone else. Also until I see a direct quote and the context in which it was said I don't for one second believe a player of Mickelson's talent and ego is going to duck a course because its too hard. His lack of fear and confidence in his otherworldly skill is what gets his crazy ass into the blow ups.

Good post.

I know there's alot of sentiment that Phil is a douchebag, but I've watched the guy for years now, and I don't really see it. To me, he seems like a private kind of guy who is somewhat uncomfortable with the spotlight in which he exists. "I'm such an idiot" is as good as you'll ever get from him. Not a media darling by any stretch, but people love the guy. And I respect the hell out of him, and also hope that he wins this tourney. It may very well be his last of the year.

Whatever the outcome, best of luck to the Mickelson family in the upcoming months. Would love to see Amy giving Phil a big'ol hug on the 72nd hole of many more tourneys in the future.

Peace.

I respect your opinion, but I totally disagree. Dig a little and you'll find constant immature behavior, especially when Tiger is involved.

Signs autographs? Sure he does. It's part of the PR program that he tried to put in place, complete with that fake, supercilious "hangdog" smile he wears, even when he hits into the water.

So, no offense to his supporters intended, like I said, I'd rather see Darth Vader win.

Well, that's what he said. He said that Jack set up the course too tough and he wouldn't be playing. I have absolutely no time for his plastic expression or pasted on smiles.

I hope Tiger comes back and rips him to shreds.

I'm surprised at the harsh nature of these comments, given the source and the current circumstances with Phil's wife.

Personally, I hope Tiger fails in his attempt to beat Jack's 18 majors, even though it's more than likely he'll achieve that.

And I can't think of a sports figure that's received more adulation, combined with minimal criticism, than Tiger. Jordan was idolized, but he was also criticized at times. That's another reason I'd like to see Tiger fail - so that the media fixation and fellation would susbside.

But we all have our varying opinions.

Tiger's got to put up -3 or so on the front before it starts pouring again. I see it happening. Well now it looks like they might be able to play till 3ish, Tiger should get his full round in, awesome if he shoots a 67 or 66.

Duval's really hanging in there, we might be seeing him around permantly from now on.

It should start raining early on his back nine. The key will be if there's any lightning. They can play for an hour or two in the rain before the course becomes unplayable due to ground water, but only if there's no lightning in the area.

does he hate tiger? yes. is he extremely competitive? yes. does that make him fake? not in my opinion. does that make him an ass hole? far from it. when i was 13 years old i followed him around on a cold monday practice round at the phx open. when he finished i asked him for an autograph. he signed my cap and since i was one of the only people around, he stayed and talked to me for about 15 minutes. he asked me about my swing, who i was taking lessons from, where i wanted to play in college etc. it was one of the coolest things any professional athlete i've been around has done.

that would be a very good thing.

"In case of a thunderstorm, stand in the middle of the fairway and hold up a one iron. Not even God can hit a one iron." - Lee Trevino, reminiscing about being hit by lightning in Chicago in 1975 and remarking about a certain other player's fondness for the club...

"I would say that probably the best shots that I've played in golf, and the ones I remember the most, have been 1-iron shots." Jack Nicklaus, Baltusrol, 1967 U.S. Open
