Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

One of the common sentiments shared on here is that Urban is the second best coach in college football. I think it's more accurate to say that he has the second best career of current college football coaches. Coaches' abilities do decline over time. Woody wasn't the same coach in the late 70s as he was in the mid 50s....or even the early 70s. Is UM at this stage, I don't have the faintest idea, but it doesn't mean that it's an impossibility. What I do know is that this team could have very well lost to a really crappy Corn team today after a bye week and coming off a blowout loss to a decidedly mediocre Purdue team.

This shit is kinda weak to me. I’m an FSU grad, and seeing first hand what happens when an elite coach leaves.

My FSU buddies, who all HATE Meyer as a person, have all stated if he leaves OSU they’d love him at FSU.

The dude is still young. He just went through a Brett Kavanaugh hearing. This year has been a complete mess.

And we are still 8-1.

I have issues with a lot of the things he does and how he handles in game situations/playcalls.

But be careful what you wish for. Seriously....Willie Taggert could be our next coach.

I think we're assuming Urban can still lure a competent coaching staff to OSU.

Maybe you're being sarcastic, but I'm sure he could in a heartbeat. There are plenty of both experienced coaches like Ash who may be available or young hungry guys looking to build a resume.

With all the support staff this team has, it can't be that hard to come up with a great list with background info to check against.

Wondering if UM could lure Marcus Freeman away from UC as the next LB Coach and add a Co DC tag to his title, while giving him what I would assume would be a moderately decent raise. I can almost guarantee Freeman would be a huge upgrade at LB Coach, and him and Grinch would be a decent duo to lead the defense. The players would almost certainly buy into what Freeman is teaching them, as well. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but he’s near the top of my list as potential replacements for Davis and/or Schiano.

I think it's possible. Wouldn't be easy, but giving Freeman some upward mobility at a big problem has to be a pretty big plus.

Seeing how the receivers have played better under Hartline I think it would be a great idea to get an alum. Especially one with the experience of Freeman.

Idc if it's an alum, or even a guy from OH. Get the best young, hungry guys who can light a fire under the players. I don't see Saban or Sweeney making it a big deal to get alum or guys from the state, just the best. Look at some of the best defenses in the country: Southern Miss, App St, for example have some great defenses, look at some of their coordinators. Throw some money at the coordinators for Miami or Miss St. Freeman should be an option, but so should plenty of others

Completely agree with your statement that coaches can get worse over time. Trying to connect the dots that one season not up his (frankly historic) standard is a sign of that is a bit of a reach. Even great coaches in their prime have off years. The great Saban followed up one his NC runs with a fourth place finish in the SEC West the next year. I'd like to see some more evidence before writing off a 54 year old Urban as past his prime.

This isn't the end or even the beginning of the end, but it just might be the end of the beginning.

What I am wondering is if Urban is simply a guy who needs to reset and move onto a new challenge after 4 or 5 years. He's now been here longer than he was at Florida.
