Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

My guess is that we finish 3rd in the final polls after the bowls followed by back to back to back CFP championships.

This isn't the end or even the beginning of the end, but it just might be the end of the beginning.

What I am wondering is if Urban is simply a guy who needs to reset and move onto a new challenge after 4 or 5 years. He's now been here longer than he was at Florida.
Are you still here?

Hasn't it been at least 5 years? Haven't you thought about how great BuckNuts is?

Cloaker. I predict we win this year and the following two. And follow that up with three more. And after we send the booger eater back to the NFL with his tail between his legs, we are about two coach misfires away from Scum quitting football forever. By that point we should be able to upload Urban into the Matrix and he can stick around forever and we don't have to talk about cysts any more.

Are you sure there isn't a thread somewhere in need of mindless contrarianism.

OK, I'll throw some chum out there. Just wondering - is something missing in this coaching staff regarding loyalty to the program? I certainly understood why Nick Bosa decided not to play again this year, but to take off and leave the team? That smacks of a lack of leadership from the player and a failure to develop leadership from the coaching staff. If anything is missing from this talented team it seems to me to be a sense of "we're all in this together."

I remember fondly how we laughed when Hanne, Long and Bicycle Boy stayed for one last shot and played through to the disappointing end. But, they bonded. They committed and they stuck it out - for themselves, for their teammates, for their coach and for their school. Winovich could certainly have opted out, but he committed and I have no doubt that if he were to have a season ending injury he'd still be on the sideline, being a leader.

Perhaps going for all those 4 and 5 star recruits is not the gift we think it is. They've been coddled since 7th or 8th grade; wined and dined and met friends with benefits for three years before committing. How could that not lead to an out-sized ego? How could that not contribute to an attitude of "me first"?

Maybe Hairball is better off with more threes than fours, kids who depend upon each other to survive. And how do you get a kid like Winovinch to hang around after two of the most painful losses in the history of The Game, two games they had every right to think they coulda/shoulda won?

Of course the counter argument is Alabama and Saban, but frankly that's a whole different situation, a whole different culture.

So which 5 stars do you not go after?
I know. Hind sight, Claret - no, Pryor - no, Miller and Barrett yes. Why? Claret had a history prior to arriving at OSU and the "it's all about me" recruiting show that Pryor used to grab attention should have told Tress that he was going to be difficult to discipline. I say that realizing that without MoC the Bucks don't win the NC and without Pryor they're stuck with a drop back passer with little mobility and Bauserman until Miller is ready. Probably costs us at least one Michigan game right there, but it probably also avoids tattoogate. (in fact, it did cost us one Michigan game - 2011.)

I don't know if it's a question of not going after them or cutting them loose sooner. There were tons of warning signs with Pryor though, including the stunt that he pulled on signing day. That should have been the signal to cut bait and walk away. I'm not sure that I've seen Urban go after anyone like that though. They may have a sense of entitlement on the field that we don't see, but I'm not seeing any clear cut off the field signs that they're going to be trouble as there was with Pryor.

While appropriate for this part of the discussion, I think a case can be made for its application in others:

Tress has always wanted to help talented but troubled kids. Some times you just can't effect them soon enough to make a positive change. Clarett would have turned out better given more time. Pryor was just not going to change for a long time. But how can you tell who can be changed quickly and who is toxic?
