Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

Perhaps the most monumentally unnecessary crash and burn I’ve ever seen. What ever possessed him to take a job he didn’t need or want, to coach guys he didn’t know how to relate to, in a town with a team no one gives a shit about, under media scrutiny he knew he’d get, with a roster no one could win with…I mean what in the absolute fuck was he thinking?

Ego. Something Urban has never been short on.

A bizarre decision with a predictable.ending.

It was. Its so much easier to win when everyone on your team is better than everyone on the other team.

Its certainly not easy to put together a team where everyone on your team is better, obviously. Obviously there wouldn't be an entire industry devoted to covering the attempts to do that if it were.

Then beyond getting those guys, you have to develop them, instill a winning culture and then win the coaching battle on gameday. I think Urban thought the culture part was the differentiator. And that's really important, I think if he looks at Florida after he left (to be narcissistic), what he did with the same guys at Ohio State, from the 2011 to 2012 or why isn't Tom Herman or anyone else, winning at Texas despite what a good X's and O's guy we know him to be... you can see why he would be lead to believe that...

Its still the Jimmies and the Joes, especially in the NFL, and especially when the other team not only have better guys than you at most spots, and those guys are more experienced than you.

Couple that with the many other missteps, and this was always going to happen.

It was a long con the whole time to ruin Lawrence. Mission accomplished.

I didn't think this was going to work out well. I really felt like urbs peak as a HC were behind him. From afar it seemed like he was more turning into a delegate/CEO as the years progressed if that makes sense. You need to rely on your staff of course, but I got the feel it was more rubber stamping towards the end. Maybe that had to do with the health issues, maybe he was just comfortable, idk. That's the way it felt as an outsider, so it could be the complete opposite in reality.

I said the other day and I still believe, I really think he thought that he and Lawrence - the best college QB he ever saw (he said it Fox) - could turn things around quickly in Jacksonville. He underestimated the difficulty of the task and didn't have the patience for a five-year rebuild, quickly became frustrated, and it bubbled to the surface.

I don't think he can even go back to Fox now, but people have short memories. A year away from the game - he's got plenty of money - and maybe another door opens?

There was a lot of pushback when I said he would be a fool to take the job. Wow, this is a case study in destroying brand equity. I am so sorry he took that job.
I think there was already some brand entropy going on, it was just a matter of how and where it would shake out. If you’re going to blow up your life, Jacksonville’s a pretty good venue. Can anyone explain why they even have a football team?

Another door will certainly open. Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon to a lesser extent. Any SEC school. These places want to win and they don't give a fuck how it happens.
