2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Pantoni and his staff need to identify more prospects within our footprint who can be developed into good to great 4 year CFB players.
Not just go down a list of Rivals 5 stars.

Outside of Ewers, who are some other elite players we lost to the portal? (And at moment it’s prob generous to call Ewers a huge loss).

I guess you could include Jameson Williams but he lost his position battle at slot to JSN.

OSU is largely recruiting at an elite level and retaining the kids it wants too. I continue to think our fanbase is overreactive to what Harbaugh has accomplished last 2 years with a roster older than the Jacksonville Jaguars.

We need to do better in the portal, and we need to find more toughness both mentally and physically, but we also continue to pump out NFL talent at an elite level and are a CFP threat nearly every year.

There is a sentiment from the Debbie downer side of the fan base currently that there is going to be a mass rush to the portal by contributors after the playoff is over. Of course there is zero actual evidence of this or any logical reason to expect this.

Why do we need a complete tear down of our recruiting program?
We're going to end with the 2nd or 3rd highest recruiting class in terms of avg score.
Are you projecting that we'll end up with the 15th or 20th avg score recruiting class next year?

I do believe we need to enhance our NIL but, personally, wouldn't use much of it on recruiting HS players.
I would focus the NIL program to pay current players (those who are actually playing) which would
entice competitive HS players ("look at the $ once you earn PT") as well as a small number of impactful portal transfers (2-3 players per year who are expected to be starters).

Hate to be sinister but I wouldn't announce who the starter is until the 4th game next year v ND.

First 3 should be a try out like Michigan did.

Lessens chance of a quick in-season flight risk (we'd be thin if Brown won the job in spring and McCord transfers).
It also provides more data points on who the starter should be.
You've jumped the shark, dude.

Despite what some naysayers are touting, I'm really excited about this class.
I love our QB commit "Dakota". Three star athlete in HS (football, BB, Baseball) and provides us with a double threat at QB.
Our stable is full at RB so not a major need.
WR class is the best in CFB and it's not even close.
TE was also a major score. Has star potential written all over him.
OL is a solid class with Montgomery being a potential star at OT.
DL is very good imho. Mickens is a true pass rusher. Moore can play inside or outside and may be the steal of the class. Smith is improving by the day and Macdonald is what we need at NT.
We are solid with depth at LB and Reese also has star potential.
DB's two excellent guys in Hunt and Matthews.
Safety class is really good with Hartford, Hawkins and hopefully Bonsu.

Michigan's handling of their QB situation was AWFUL. Lol. They just had good fortune in it ultimately working out. Also calling it a "competition" even is kind of a sham, it's clear they pretty much knew McCarthy was going to be the guy from the start

They are very very fortunate that McCarthy never got hurt. They woulda crashed into flames if he did.

I feel like we probably could have gotten Wilson, but for the money.

I am very excited about McDonald. He is a big mamma jamma, and the kind of player we have had a difficult time getting from the south.
and they don't have many of those up here. they have Damon Wilson's. not to confuse the talent level of the two, merely the rareness of finding that type of DT up here.

this is a good point. I don’t have data. But it feels like we go out of state / Midwest a ton for corners and safeties and our hit rate has been slumping the last few years

I don’t see a mass rush….I do see maybe 5 guys who are currently depth being kindly ushered to the portal…..I do not foresee any players we expect to be high level contributors though.

Yea of course we will probably lose a couple of "depth" players. That's going to happen every year. That will be spun into another big freak out though, lol.

Agreed.

I'm not sure why if you were a legit player you would leave.
For example guys like Kourt Williams and Proctor are not going to find a better situation at most all tier 1 programs.
There just aren't that many bodies.
Guys like Grant Toutant and Leroux I'd expect to move on.

Question:
I keep hearing about another wave of portal entries after the bowl seaons. And that there will be significant players available for us. When is that window.

Purely hypothetical but maybe a guy like Joe royer would move on (I like him he just can't stay healthy) if we had contact and knew Luke Lachey was going to hit the portal.
