2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Ohio State football makes move up in 2023 team recruiting rankings after last 247Sports update

Sometimes things go a little under the radar and that’s exactly what happened with the last 2023 team composite rankings from 247Sports. The popular recruiting service updated its final rankings for every player in the recruiting cycle. And with it, an Ohio State recruiting class that was somewhat light on numbers and not as highly thought of got a bit of a bump.

It wasn’t a major bump, and there’s still not the volume of players a lot of other schools have, or probably not even what the Buckeyes would like to have, but it is a bump nonetheless.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes

Interesting. My BRPT class review was that I am really high on many commits in this class despite some painful misses and the numbers issue, there are a lot of guys that I think can contribute and early on. You put together a top 5 class every year, and you will likely compete like we have in the recent years. Honestly, I was pretty stoked about this class and I guess 247 is as well. Gotta have a stellar '24 OL class, but the '23 class was imo sneaky good.

Recruiting is much more "visible" today than years (actually decades) gone by. And for whatever reason, a lot of people (like me) remember the "misses" a lot more that the "gets". The reality is that you never really know just how good any recruiting class is until 3, 4. or 5 down the road; and that is even more true today with the transfer portal.

With that being said; yeah, the 2023 class does look pretty damn good. You put in a top 5 class every year and you should be in contention for a championship; the problem is that Alabama and Georgia seem to be putting in top 2 or 3 classes every year.

Along that line, Alabama and Georgia (among other schools) get both quality and quantity. Ohio State has seen firsthand how important high-quality depth is due to injuries, lack of player development, early entries to the NFL draft, and the transfer portal - and we've had some bad luck (relatively speaking) in all four at times. But quality is still the core foundation for the program and the '23 class is awesome on a per-player basis.

2023 SAFETY AND OHIO STATE LEGACY RYAN RUDZINSKI COMMITS TO THE BUCKEYES AS A PREFERRED WALK-ON

The Buckeyes have recruited Ryan as a safety and nickel back.

Ryan had some other options.

“Some (Other) schools I have been in contact with are Toledo, Ohio, Miami of Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and some Ivy League schools,” Ryan told Bucknuts in December.. “Out of those I have preferred walk-on offers to OU, Toledo, and Virginia.”

However, in the end Ryan could not pass up the opportunity to be a Buckeye..

24/7 has him as a 3 star "athlete".

RYAN DAY'S 2023 FRESHMAN CLASS IS LOADED WITH TALENT BUT CARVING OUT SIGNIFICANT ROLES TAKES TIME

With eleven early enrollees as part of Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class taking part in spring practice, it's an exciting time for players, staff and fans alike as the early returns give a glimpse into how well high school success might translate to the elite collegiate level.

Of course optimism usually reigns supreme during spring so it can be hard to wade through the quotes and reports to draw any real conclusions.

That said, the harsh reality is that at school's like Ohio State, even as the latest class ranked No. 5 in the country, it's a tough putt for a true freshman to come in and carve out a huge role in year one. That doesn't mean it never happens - heck we saw it in 2021 as TreVeyon Henderson exploded on the scene with 1,248 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns and Denzel Burke locked down a cornerback spot - but seasons like those are the exception to the rule.

More often, only a few newcomers will establish themselves in the offensive or defensive two-deep while special teams will see a handful evolve into regular contributors.
