2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

It will be like the NBA free agent signing .,the tampering ends at 1200 yet many free agents sign at 1201. If you wait to May1 to start contact you will be behind.
If you notice, the highly sought after players have come from schools where coaching changes took place. It's easier to zero in on potential targets in those situations. The May cycle will be depth related departures, which will lack video and measurables, other than they are somebody that was supposed to be somebody.

Yea doubtful that there's many high profile guys in the May cycle. Most of the higher end guys who were gonna transfer have likely already done it. Minus maybe a QB or two once competitions are more settled after spring.

Pantoni and his staff need to identify more prospects within our footprint who can be developed into good to great 4 year CFB players.
Not just go down a list of Rivals 5 stars.
They need to bring in the most talented players they can. I don't care if they're from the Midwest or the South or the moon if they have legitimate interest. (Edit: and fit the culture)

Do they need to adjust to the new reality? Yes. But I hardly think missing on 3 guys from the south is a reason to blow up the entire strategy.

I hope we can focus on filling needs not rerecruiting depth we need to keep.

Im sure I'm in the minority but I love this class! There are no weaknesses from a position standpoint even though there might not be a lot of depth or 5 star ratings. IDGAF about ratings for the most part as long as they are legitimate Buckeye level recruits and all the ones in this class are. Coach them up and lead the way through this ridiculous time we're experiencing with some sanity. Pay the guys who've earned it in the uniform and community.

They do have to put 100% effort into getting players though we can't have this Eeyore mentality. Turn the ones we get into champions!

I think it's entirely possible to like this class and still recognize the flips and misses as something that is concerning.

Maybe it's just me.

It's recruiting so there's always going to be room for improvement. I'm falling into the category of gaining from the portal more than just high school at this point. I don't want these kids who haven't done jack shit to earn money for their schools to dictate paydays. The whole point was for them to get a piece of the pie that the universities get from advertising their Name, Image and Likeness right? Eliminate slave labor which I'm all for. How these kids can say they are worth all this money and haven't even been to a training camp yet is what bothers me. You can lose any of them at any time with no contributions to the school and no compensation for lost investment. I say crank out the big bucks for the JTs and Harrisons, Eichenbergs and Johnsons of the world and show people what they can earn while incentivising work ethic and stability over possible potential. The same feelings I have always had in business. Don't give big hiring bonuses to sharp kids who have never worked when you can reward the guy who's helped build your company and has proven ability.

My assumption is tOSU has some guys in the wings in portal that aren’t named in public yet because it’d likely piss off depth going into a CFP game.
Agreed.

I'm not sure why if you were a legit player you would leave.
For example guys like Kourt Williams and Proctor are not going to find a better situation at most all tier 1 programs.
There just aren't that many bodies.
Guys like Grant Toutant and Leroux I'd expect to move on.

Question:
I keep hearing about another wave of portal entries after the bowl seaons. And that there will be significant players available for us. When is that window.

Purely hypothetical but maybe a guy like Joe royer would move on (I like him he just can't stay healthy) if we had contact and knew Luke Lachey was going to hit the portal.

That player is likely back-channeled and won’t pop up publicly on OSU’s radar until feelings won’t be hurt in our run…..that’s just the truth of it.

You don’t need a Junior CB announcing his declaration to OSU when we have Freshmen as depth against UGA….

Agreed for the most part.

But not certain that can be said for OT.

We’ve offered 4.
3 have given us the finger. 4th is still pending.
Many of those guys had money thrown at them.

If we can fix NIL, we should focus on some of those types of guys that some reasonable amount of money may seal the deal.

I don't think a school can win in a Mark Fletcher to the highest bidder situation. That's not a good bet on a return of investment, and the school should steer clear.

If (hopefully) OSU starts upping their NIL game and starts throwing up front money, they will be able to close out some of these must needed players.

Are we so far down the "let's turn everywhere into twitter" rabbit hole that we're treating great 4 year players as a normal thing? is this because Michigan was laughable for twenty years and then their Caden Curry recruit finally switched from decent to great in year 4 and beat OSU in the snow? Which is why he is not close to Sam Hubbard territory let alone a Bosa in college. he was great one year (and continues to be strong).

Great players aren't usually here in 4 years. A few are, but they are rare, and they certainly aren't that way throughout the 4 years.

See Werner, Pete (who was an underappreciated gem but had to develop before he was ready because there was no LB depth)
