tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Sounds like he wasn't getting as much early attention as he wanted so he had it made up in his mind that OSU wasn't the right place for him before he even stepped foot on campus for his OV. Sucks that he felt that way, but like mentioned above, OSU isn't going to offer 4-5 OL in Ohio in any recruiting cylce and be caught with their pants down in a position to not accept their committment (as other schools do when offering hundreds of kids each cycle), as they pursue other national OL recruits and potentially burn bridges with area coaches in the process.

OSU is a national brand and should continue to go after the big fish. The number of in-state recruits OSU offers each year continues to drop. Maybe they should offer a few more earlier on the process to buck this narrative, but I think they do a good job overall of identifying the top-end Ohio talent early and the rest have to prove it at camps and with solid film as their seasons progress. I'm sure other schools work in a similiar manner and it isn't just an OSU issue. *ichigan just took advantage of this particular kid's situation.

Not a legit loss. Like stated, OSU never offered, OL seems to be a down year in OH on the outside in ‘24. Was going to be a camp offer at best if it ever happened

I gotta disagree....Luke is 100% worthy of an offer, a nasty OL who has the size and athleticism needed to stay at tackle. Kid likely would have jumped if offered after the summer circuit. We slow play many in-state kids with the idea we can flip late which many times is the case but it can burn you as well and we may have burnt our bridge with easily the top OL in-state of 2024.

Recruiting isn't taking a hit. So far...

Which tells me that our staff is very transparent with their recruits ahead of time with their issues.

Credibility is important and go's far. I could be wrong, but my take is the staff knows where the weaknesses are, has known, and acknowledged them.

The staff is working through issues that should have been addressed 2 years ago, but it's a work in progress and it will take time, which we really don't have, but have to muddle through it.

You are free to disagree, but Birm, AG, AE, and several others have all stated on numerous occasions that Hamilton was not OSU caliber. Could he be in a year? Maybe. But OSU has made inroads with the top 4 overal OTs in the 2024 class. And Frye needs to be allowed to work his magic to land several of them, that is why he was brought here and why Stud was shown the door. OH is having a down year for OL(the 2024 class is actually in a down year for OL as a whole so far)out of the gate, Hamilton was 1 of several of the top OL in OH, and every analyst has none of the, are OSU caliber. So now you would like OSU to offer every OH OL because they’re from OH? That’s literally what this fan base wanted Stud canned for, but a loss in The Game has turned people into no longer remembering what they complained about just a year ago.

Day and OSU in no way slow play OH players, and the signings back up that statement. The last 3 recruiting cycles have been led by a top OH commit who has built the classes tightness(Sawyer, Hicks and Montgomery)

OSU has the #6 ranked class, the only team that is undefeated and ahead of them is UGA. The other teams ahead of them are the titans that are: Texas, ND, and LSU. The #1 team is Bama, which isn’t a surprise, but the only team in the CFP hunt is UGA in the entire top 10. So OSU is in much better shape than most of the teams it’s recruiting against, even after getting embarrassed last weekend.

OSU still has one of the best coaching staffs in CFB. The recruiting is still top notch

That's a strong, well said take....I'll allow it.

Not entirely certain how one is transparent with the Ahia kids....Hey, here's a non-commitable offer, as we're chasing OLs (insert position here) that are higher on our board than you, but, we cannot take your commitment at this minute, and later rescind as a higher target commits...If you offer an Ahia kid, good chance they'll commit on the spot. I've read many times that's the reason they take their time with the home state players. Every coach up until Coop tried to scoop up the top Ahia kids, and Coop went national with some good success. Tress seemed to get back to more Ahia recruits, but Urban went national in a big way, very successfully. Not entirely certain of Day's modus operendi, time will sort that out, but (to me at least), seems he casts a wide net on certain positions (QB & WR), and is willing to make projects out of the Ahia kids - when nationally ranked kids commit elsewhere (OL and DB). Just a thought, and I don't really know how to work around this problem.

I think it’s become exaggerated that Day doesn’t go after OH recruits, same with Meyer. Fact is, the states talent has taken a dip over the years. Tressel and Cooper didn’t have to deal with that, nor did they have to worry about a CFP, NIL or a transfer portal. Day brings in the top talent regardless of where they live. But the days of focusing on OH to mainly fill a close are over. And for all the talk of scUM winning the Game twice in a row with OH cast offs, that’s fine. I rather have guys like PJJ, Sawyer, Styles and Hicks, etc than worry about developing 3stars for 4yrs in hopes they become starters.

But the fact is, Day landed 7of the top 10 recruits in OH in ‘23, 5 of the top 10 in’22, 5 of 10 in ‘21 and in a down year in 2020 he landed 4 of the top 10(if you include the transfer of Chip Trayanum).

Figured I'd put this here as my $.02 on recruiting going forward for OSU. Day isn't the reason that the HS kids aren't getting more in NIL, its solely the collectives. It gets frustrating constantly seeing people place blame at Day when OSU doesn't land a player because of a lack of NIL up front. And I have been on the side of not wanting to pay up front money to recruits, but there has to be something done if OSU wants to continue being in the CFP hunt. Losing players like Wilson, Okunla and Dijon Johnson due NIL hurts, but when there's a threat to even lose your in state talent because of NIL, that's where real problems arise. And there's a slippery slope from being on top of the B1G and then being in purgatory like Wisconsin or Iowa. With the NCAA sitting on their hands, I wish the OSU collectives would do more on the NIL front for recruits. In the south, their collectives don't care what they have to spend in order to land top talent, and this just isn't the same names we've constantly heard, but also teams like Ole Miss, Auburn, Florida, etc. You can't expect to beat teams if you're not playing by the same rules. The portal will help with some of those losses, but unless our collective changes their strategy, the losses will continue. It's just the sobering truth. Like Birm has alluded to: OSU boosters want to spend money to have their names on buildings, or for new community facilities, hospitals, etc. Thats noble and all, but southern schools pay to put the best product on the field and keep their roster filled with the best talent every year. If OSU is fine with winning Rose Bowls for their best years and winning an occasional B1G title then they should continue with what they're currently doing. But if they want to dominate the B1G, and annually be in the top4 in the CFP, then some changes need to be made. And unfortunately the coaches' hands are tied unless the collectives start opening their wallets for recruits and not other interests
