tOSU Recruiting Discussion

To the extent we "miss out" on a player because our "up-front money isn't good enough," I think we probably don't really want that player.

It’s going to be an interesting case study in a few years, to follow those teams who have paid up front, vs the ones who decided to let the players play dictate their deals.

Roster turnover seems like it's going to be crazy at the paid up front schools, once some of those players don't perform to expectation and are kicked to the curb and told to go elsewhere so the next group can have room to come in and hopefully be better. This happens anyway but I expect it to happen even more now.

There's a point where constantly shuffling players takes a toll on the team/team chemistry.

Not to mention high attrition of teams can take tolls on leadership too; that’s an exhausting dynamic for a coaching staff in my opinion — or at least it sounds like it could be?

that just doesn’t sounds like it ends well for programs undergoing that at all from top to bottom

Don't recollect that the 'up front' schools are having massive turnover in portal. Schools like Alabama (and tOSU methinks), do cherry pick individuals that can immediately step in and improve their product. I'm seeing some of the mid-tier schools and wannabes (aka Michigan St, USC, you fill in others) are making their living on the portal. As Buckeyemania mentioned, if the talent doesn't put up, they're shown the door, and their roster postion is filled by a more proven commodity from another school that wants a chance for a title, or expects better national exposure a la the NFL. Heck, the portal does make more sense than taking a risk on an 18 year old that maybe a) has matured early; b) played very well in an inferior HS league; c) some other reason. Two or three years of a good 4* stuck behind a 5*, and then maybe bypassed by the next-great-thing would give me itchy feet as well.

When you’re talking the “up front” schools, are you referring to the schools who paid kids up front? Because if so, it’s way too early to see the results of that as NIL just started last year. Like the insane aTm class is only all true frosh, so we won’t know until at least seasons end if the players leave or if they stay.

And the portal is a gift and a curse. Because it can give a team an experienced player. But it can also give you a player who still needs to learn the system and build rapport with their teammates. Imo, the issues that Bama had against Texas were the later. Burton has only a few months working with Young, and it hasn’t paid off immediately like Williams did last year. The worry for coaches is that a transfer will throw off the team chemistry, and good coaches who know their teams will use the transfer portal as needed. But idk if using the portal for mercenaries is going to get long term success(but the outlier is always Saba/Bama), just ask Miami…

Pnut, can see why you'd ask that. Naw, up front NIL money is for those who are reaching for a recruit. The 'up front' I was referring to are those schools that are perennialy (sp!) up front in the AP, Coaches, ESPN etc polls. Those that 'got it' but want more. Go Bucks!

Some comments from Birm on recruiting in the NIL age:

I really think it's hard to express how much NIL has changed the balance of power across the sport but also inside locker rooms.

Have definitely heard there's a rift in the Alabama locker room.

I think this is why Day is so hesitant to offer big upfront NIL deals to incoming freshman. You can't have that many highly ranked kids that have been offered BIG upfront not cause rifts in a locker room, with upperclassmen who were just as highly ranked in HS. As good as Caleb Downs is, he hasn't played a college down, and you expect Jordan Battle to be happy knowing that Downs may be getting a 6 or 7 figure deal without stepping foot on campus?
Jase McClellan, Roydell Williams and Trey Sanders were all highly rated, and I'm sure they can't be that happy that Richard Young and Justice Haynes may get huge deals from collectives.
