Five best quarterback destinations in college football

USATSI_17440757.jpg

The best coaches generally get their choice of the best players.

While five-star running back Rueben Owens bucked that trend in committing to Louisville, generally the best players go to the best systems.

There are a number of factors that go into where a player will play college football. NIL opportunities certainly play a role for recruits. Location and campus atmosphere also factor into the decision. However, the better the offensive system and track record, the more likely a quarterback is to consider choosing a school.

Coaches that produce Heisman trophy winning quarterbacks and first-round NFL draft picks are popular destinations. Similarly, programs with winning tradition also factor into recruiting decisions. Here are five of the top quarterback destinations in college football.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

If the Ohio State Buckeyes want a quarterback, they typically get him. After a strong season by Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud, Quinn Ewers and Jack Miller III departed for other schools. Despite losing two blue-chip quarterbacks, Ohio State retained Stroud and five-star quarterback Kyle McCord. In addition, it won a recruiting battle for another five-star quarterback, Devin Brown. And though Joe Burrow is not an Ohio State-developed star, the LSU signal-caller was unable to crack the starting lineup for the Buckeyes. Players certainly gravitate to becoming one of the 11 warriors in Ohio.

2. USC Trojans
3. Texas Longhorns
4. Clemson Tigers
5. Alabama Crimson Tide

OHIO STATE HAS FIVE MORE FIVE-STAR RECRUITS THAN THE REST OF THE BIG TEN COMBINED

The Buckeyes have 14 five-star players on their roster (seven on each side of the ball). The rest of the Big Ten's 13 teams come nowhere close to that amount.
  • The Buckeyes have as many five-star wide receivers (three) and defensive ends (three) as Penn State has five-star players. The Nittany Lions have the second-most five-star players in the conference behind only Ohio State.
  • Ohio State has nine players who have a better rating than the next-best non-Buckeye in the Big Ten (Michigan cornerback Will Johnson).
  • The Bucks have five more five-stars (14) than the rest of the conference combined (nine).
For comparison’s sake, here's how Ohio State's 14 five-star players stack up against some of the other top programs in the country, specifically the other top-10 teams in the preseason AP poll.

TEAM FIVE-STARS ON 2022 ROSTER
Alabama 14
Ohio State 14
Georgia 16
Clemson 12
Notre Dame 2
Texas A&M 10
Utah 0
Michigan 2
Oklahoma 3
Baylor 0

Hard to believe Bama has 'only' 14 5*s. They seem to stack them up like cordwood, and rarely hear of a stud transferring (although quite a few 'filler' recruits seem to go away). Given there's about 30-35 of these 'elite' athletes each year, those numbers seem a tad low.

I think it also factors in that Bama lost 7 players to the NFL draft, and they were all either 5 or very high 4 stars. That's a lot of talent to lose for any team

Love him or not, Lebron James is something very different. As great as Saban is, and it's very great, Alabama can't match Ohio State for the stars who come to see the games on Saturday. No other school has what we just saw on Saturday for the game against Notre Dame. For recruiting, it is an unmatched advantage in my opinion.

There's no Bama alum that would make all of the recruits flock to them just for a picture. Derrick Henry, Tua, Davonte Smith, etc don't get the same type of love on a scale to younger players. Bama, Saban and NCs are main selling point(and that is a MASSIVE one)

One of the biggest recruiting mic drops :sneaky:

Not to be that guy…but I’ll be that guy.

We are missing on some players because our up front money isn’t good enough.

TIFWIW….among parents of kids we are known as the college that pays the list for productivity. We are also difficult when it comes to new recruits….we aren’t playing that game as well as others….most likely bc we are a bit conservative on that front.

I'd imagine we want to be sure kids are good at the D1 level before we commit to these 5-7 figure pay days. I don't blame OSU at all... not all 5 stars pan out and obviously there's 3 stars who do.

Wonder if there's a way to do contracts? Such as if a player transfers they have to give everything back and also if a player doesn't pan out then there's no pay?

I don't think that's possible but it should be.

Those schools paying kids up front are also breaking the rules and should be held accountable. I appreciate that Ohio State is doing things the right way and holding off until the recruits enroll at OSU before allowing them to profit from NIL

Ohio State also needs to keep letting the recruiting world know that their players present and past are profiting more from NIL AND from their NFL contracts than any other school (which are both true), because that such needs to be shouted from the mountain tops
