tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We can continue the OL recruiting here:

Per Birm:
It's not a great class around the country but there's no doubt that Ohio State was late to the party on some good players that, had they been more aggressive, maybe they'd have won the battle. Jackson Lloyd is one that comes to my mind.
:mad2:

Looking at the numbers is quite frusterating

Any number of early bloomers who don't necessarily have the same work ethic as a later bloomer.

I would think that is especially true for those getting close to $1 million coming out of high school. Getting paid more than their position coach and feeling like the center of attention during their recruitment could easily make an 18 year old kid complacent.

It would be great to get more highly rated guys (or just more guys) out of high school but I wouldn't mind buying proven college players and watching expensive high schoolers bust at other programs.

Wasn't that essentially the scUM playbook for last year?

Wonder if there's been a decision to look into the portal for tackles? A notoriously difficult position to project out of HS, given the size requirements and your typical high school. Any number of early bloomers who don't necessarily have the same work ethic as a later bloomer.

Not that I know. Just spit ballin
It is a great question because the portal may be the better answer if utilized correctly. Get a kid in with experience and some development/track record, and go from there. Maybe that is the strategy? Almost half of our starting OL will be from the portal this year (Simmons and McLaughlin).

That said, the lack of OL offers is disheartening and indicates a lack of effort on the recruiting end. Maybe they are going sniper over shotgun approach, but we've gotta have better contingency plans when we miss on the Sanders of the world. I will hush my butt (no promises) until NLOID because things can change and maybe we kick tires on some OL and it works out fine. But the writing seems to be on the wall from all of my years following recruiting.

Maybe they ought to read the book where it says, "WRs put my name in the papers, the OL keeps my name out of the obituaries". A Dan Jenkins book I believe (and a movie as well). Heck, Woody knew that. True that tOSU has had some OC/OL coordinators that have failed in recruiting quality OL to the Buckeyes. Many of our 'stars' have matriculated to other universities, eschewing the Buckeyes. Even with our good (mediocre?) numbers of OL being drafted to the league. Not entirely certain, and am less certain given the NIL cash being thrown around. However, I will say that this year, Day & Co, have reduced the money for WRs, etc and pretty much have gone 'all in' on OL (Sanders). Anyone know what Carter Lowe's NIL package might be? Anyway, if the rules change, one has to learn how to maximize one's position to further ambitions. Go Bucks!

I’ve been hoping OSU hits the Portal for OL since the Portal started. Every analyst seems to think that using the Portal for OL isn’t sustainable long term. But I push back that why can’t it be? I’m not saying get all your OL from the Portal, but 3-4 HS OL and then another 3-4 vets from the Portal. With the scholarship limits increasing, why not utilize the mix.

Why does it work so well for QBs?

B10 fall round-up had that same OL question asked of Chip Kelley. He said that he wasn't here last year, duh, but when he got here, he said, "those guys are pretty good". So, probably reason that tOSU stood pat on portal OLs (and maybe there weren't any of tOSU caliber?). Be that as it may, we'll soon see, but most of the pre-season mags have our OL ranked in top 10. Gotta believe that Chip spent a good portion of his coaching time with Frye, so hopefully we'll see the results on the field. Actually believe we'll see an uptick in quality of play this year. Jackson can tend to his own business, not having to protect Hinzman's mistakes, LOT actually did pretty well last year, not allowing sacks/hurries. RG seems to have serveral options - #1-strong run blocker, or #2-good pass pro blocker. and ROL is a guy that 'got serious' about his body, workouts, etc. Guess we'll see how well this group performs, and candidly, believe we already have our L tackle coming in, and potentially an even better one when Sanders commits to the good guys, and several of the back-ups, the twins, Montgomery, Ian Moore, and several others, will be even more serviceable than anticipated. Guess I might have my scarlet tinted glasses on today, but hey, I'm a fan! Go Bucks!

Excellent OL either go Pro or are already starting for major programs. We did get our current and 2 year starting LT out of the portal. I’ll take it. Often linemen don’t play early so they aren’t ready to transfer until they are upper classmen or they were elite recruits and aren’t seeing early playing time. QB’s have the ability to shine at many places and transfer accordingly

Maybe a bit off topic, but still in the OL recruiting thread. Believe that is why fFrench got turned off on the Buckeyes. Day & Co made a deliberate decision to carve up the NIL 'pie' to emphasize OL, as opposed to the usual WR/DB/QB packages. Specifically the David Sanders sweepstakes. So, if one notices, there are zero 5* WRs coming to Buckeyetown. Emphasizing the needed positions (OL), rather than WRs meant a bigger slice for OL, a smaller one for WRs. Actually believe this strategy is a very good one, and hopefully will pay dividends later today for Sanders. Go Bucks!
