Recruiting is typically local. That's the danger with chasing the best and passing on the pretty good local guys like Xavier Henderson. Sometimes you hit a home run, sometimes you don't.

DE ______ vs Cox (they're going to get two quality local kids)

LB Mitchell vs Gaotete

CB Johnson vs Surtain/Cook (last year they won THREE of these and that is without Riep/Williamson)

S Proctor vs Woodbey

QB was a need and they got a high upside sleeper. Now they need Martell and their 2019 recruit to be hits.
RB was a small need and they did well here.
WR was a small need and they did a solid job.
TE was a huge need and they may have signed the best TE Urban has recruited (while he's prone to hyperbole, recruiting analysts have called him the best since Gronk).
OT hurts because they only have Wray, but let's see how it finishes.
C/G was not a big need and they got Jones.
DE will still be pretty good. It won't have a third consecutive 5-star DE, but Tyreke has some stellar upside.
DT was a big need and they had their best haul ever.
LB was a big need with their struggles and they hit big time on 3 guys.
CB has a ridiculous collection of freshman, better than any class ever.
Safety was a huge need and it was addressed.

So in the end, QB & OT hurt. DE will be more than fine, and while they're sad to miss on Cook, they frankly don't need him in this class.

Jones hurts a lot more because he was by far their top choice. They got a fairly rare level of upside in their late fallback in Baldwin, but as Bank says, they'd trade him in tomorrow for Jones.

Carman is interesting, because there are weight and maturity concerns, but his talent is undeniable. There's also the matter of how hard it is to project OL out of HS, which is why you have Pat Elflein, Billy Price and scores of MAC OL turning into NFL stars. Or why OSU failed to defend their NC because they didn't have another Darryl Baldwin in the pipeline, who might just be the MOST derided recruit (by OSU fans) that OSU has ever signed.

The finish hurts, and they had a chance for an all time class. Instead they signed a very elite class that does not register as an all-time great across all schools and years. That's not a requirement for success, that's a requirement for OSU fans enjoyment.
I don't think losing Jones hurts... We need QB's who can throw the ball and Baldwin certainly has the edge there. We don't need the Braxton Millers of the world anymore who are sub 60% completion guys but go for 1k on the ground IMO.

Obviously the rankings say otherwise between Jones and Baldwin but right now I'm a little tired of seeing us run our QB's to death which we would've done with Jones. That's why I'm not upset about losing Jones to be honest because QB run would've been emphasized again.

Emory can run but he can also really spin it. He may have permitted meyer to grab his security blanket again, but Jones can run Baker Mayfield's offense all day.

As it stands now, assuming burrow transfers, you have a pure passer (whose only useful mobility is when scrambling), an electric but undersized gamer that can spin it, and another pure passer who can run a little bit. You couldn't ask for a better collection of Urban stamped QB recruits to try and force that evolution.

Urbs and Brantley all over again?

The ultimate scenario no one really says is for ‘John’ Burrow to stay. It’s sort of funny that we clamor for new recruits more so than hope good ones stay. Not to get into roster cleaning but there are a bunch of names I would rather see depart before him. Him staying through all of his eligibility would be huge. Assume he got a medical this year, so how many left for him?

They grant medical versions of regular redshirt years when you play and get injured for most of it. You also can't play in the second half of the year though they may change that.

When seeking a sixth year of eligibility (redshirt year 1, injured for most of another year) they typically like to see you missing the better part of two non regular redshirt seasons.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE'S TOP REMAINING TARGETS FOR THE CLASS OF 2018

89536_h.jpg

Ohio State secured signatures from 21 prospects during college football's first Early Signing Period, but also missed out on one of its top targets in five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman and saw quarterback commit Emory Jones flip to Florida and safety pledge Jaiden Woodbey sign with Florida State.

Now while most of the country's top-rated prospects have signed on the dotted line, there are several uncommitted prospects who opted to hold off until the traditional National Signing Day. And with that said, their respective pledges would certainly help the Buckeyes address the glaring needs along the offensive and defensive lines.

Who are they? I'll introduce you.

As I have said, I would really like seeing more OT depth. Early signing period really hurt hear with mid level options. 2 cases in point that won't be available for late additions: Darian Kinnard and Walker Culver. In the "old days" either of these would have been hip pocket options late in the process. Not any more. That's where the Carman miss hurts.
That's what I Was saying as well

The biggest thing that I've gotten out of this last 5 years of recruiting, is that I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE these stinking "announcements." Put something on your Twitter or Facebook or whatever afterwards but THIS is how you commit:
