2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Talking about the Iowa loss and how it was 17-17 when Jones and Knox left the game briefly with injury compounding the permanent absence of Bowen......”Urban Meyer said the team’s depth on the offensive line is “not even close” to where it needs to be.”
http://www4.toledoblade.com/College/2017/11/06/Line-depth-still-a-concern-for-Ohio-State.html

They absolutely need more depth at both spots and are pretty thin at DE before this class gets deeper. Naturally the absurd one couldn't make that salient point.

Merry Christmas everyone !

Merry Christmas to the ultimate content and photo guy ever!

I think the main point on O Line depth is OT not OG. When Bowen went down you had some decent choices. But I pucker when it’s Alabi or Munford coming in. And the last classes with Josh and Wavy Dub add to the OG depth. But OT, boy I’m just not even close to comfortable with the depth.

On th surface, things may look that way. Good thing we’re paid to watch and enjoy and the coaches get paid to develop succession plans at all the positions.

There’s a clear need to restock OT and DE, but it’s an uncommon event when that’s not the case each year.

All will be just fine.

I think we get one of Smith or Oweh, probably Smith.

I think we get one of Walker, Barnes or NPF. No idea which but I just see us getting one.

So adding just 2 more puts the class at 23. If that’s all that are able to fit because Urban learns a few bigger names stay like Dre’mont and Baker then that’s great.

To me, landing 1 elite OT and DE makes a very well rounded class full of great players. I could see that happening and perhaps a signing day surprise putting the class at 24.

With Smith in, I think one of Walker, Barnes or NPF would make this one the most well-rounded and talented classes we have ever had on paper...if not THE best. If we get an absolute slam dunk, we get Friday at DE in addition to another OT. One can dream.

Early Signing Period has come and gone, and the Under Armor All Star game saw two Buckeye targets make their commitment announcements - DE Tyreke Smith to Ohio State and DE Jayson Oweh to Penn State. Although most of Ohio State's targets have signed somewhere, and the Buckeyes' class already has 22 members, there are still a few slots to fill and a few prospects worth pursuing.

Ohio State let 3* OT Walker Culver walk to Virginia Tech and then lost 5* OT Jackson Carman to Clemson on Early Signing Day. With just one OT in the current class, that position will now be the staff's primary focus heading into the traditional Signing Day in February. The main target will be 5* Nicholas Petit-Frere (Tampa FL Berkeley Prep; 6'6" 262 lbs; #3 OT, #17 overall). Petit-Frere is the rare 5* prospect who keeps quiet about his recruitment so we don't really know where the Buckeyes stand at this point. He has already taken official visits to Notre Dame and Michigan, and there has been some talk that he will use one of his three remaining official visits on Ohio State. With that being said, the crystal balls favor Florida (50%), Notre Dame (25%), and Alabama (25%). Get excited if Petit-Frere makes an official visit to Ohio State, otherwise move on to the next one.

And the next would be 4* Rasheed Walker (Waldorf MD North Point; 6'6" 300 lbs; #6 OT, #81 overall), who is supposed to make an official visit to Ohio State sometime this month. The crystal balls heavily favor Penn State (94%), but the lone hold out for Ohio State is Steve Wiltfong who is one of the most accurate and well-respected recruiting analysts. Ohio State appears to be the one school that could knock off Penn State in this battle, and the official visit will make it or break it for the Buckeyes.

The next prospect on the list is 4* William Barnes (Apopka, Florida; 6'4" 325 lbs; #5 OT, #46 overall). Barnes does not have ideal size for an offensive tackle and he is a heavy favorite to stay close to home (79% crystal balled to Florida), but he is supposed to make an official visit to Ohio State sometime this month. Auburn and North Carolina are also in the mix.

If the Buckeyes can't land one of their top three OT prospects, then it looks like they'll have to find a sleeper/late bloomer like Thayer Mumford from last year's class, or just wait until 2019 to find the right guys (Devontae Dobbs, Darnell Wright, Michael Tarquin, Quinn Carroll).

Although the Buckeyes were able to land one of their top DE prospects (Tyreke Smith), they missed out on several others (Brenton Cox, Jayson Oweh, Micah Parsons) so another open slot could be filled with a defensive end. The top prospect on the list appears to be 4* Tyler Friday (Ramsey NJ Don Bosco Prep; 6'3" 263 lbs; #3 DT, #85 overall), who is listed as a defensive tackle but who should be able to play some strong side end as well. Friday supposedly had a good official visit to Ohio State back in November, but Michigan is the overwhelming crystal ball favorite (86%). That could change if the Buckeyes decide to pursue Friday to fill a position of need in this class.

A sleeper DE prospect is 3* Daniel Carson (Independence MO William Crisman; 6'5" 260 lbs; #22 SDE, #519 overall). Carson has Ohio State in his top 5 and claims a Buckeye offer, but he currently has no official visit scheduled to Ohio State. With most of the major DE targets already signed, it will be interesting to see if the Buckeyes pursue a developmental player like Carson or wait until next year for top-flight prospects like Zach Harrison and Ani Izuchukwu.

The Buckeyes seem pretty well set at linebacker with three signees already in the fold (Dallas Gant, K'Vaughan Pope, Teradja Mitchell), but the staff will likely continue to pursue 4* Solomon Tuliaupupu (Santa Ana CA Mater Dei; 6'2" 220 lbs; #3 ILB, #89 overall). Solomon is a heavy favorite to Southern Cal (91% crystal ball) but Ohio State could still have a chance if the Buckeyes can get an official visit.

Four-star LB Christopher Oats (Cincinnati Winton Woods; 6'4" 215 lbs; #22 OLB, #318 overall) is a local kid who has been to Ohio State many times but not yet on an official visit. Although Oats claims an Ohio State offer, the Buckeyes have clearly been slow playing him up to this point. Woods doesn't fit a need at linebacker and he might be too small for defensive end.

The dynamic duo of Patrick Surtain, Jr. (Fort Lauderdale FL American Heritage; 6'2" 199 lbs; #1 CB, #5 overall) and Tyson Cambell (Fort Lauderdale FL American Heritage; 6'2" 180 lbs; #3 CB, #27 overall) still claim a passing interest in Ohio State, and both have talked about making official visits to Columbus, but they are extreme long shots at this point. You can add their teammate DE Andrew Chatfield to that long shot list.

Four-star WR
Chris Olave (San Marcos CA Mission Hills; 6'1" 170; #55 WR, #321 overall) claims an Ohio State offer and made an official visit to Columbus back in November. It's pretty clear that Ohio State is (or at least was) interested in Olave, but his status with the Buckeyes will probably not be determined until some of the current receiving crew (Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, K.J. Hill, Terry McLaurin) decide whether to declare for the NFL draft.

They played the highlight video of this kid (Devonte Lee) the other night on ESPN's Highly Questionable:

Just sayin: He's a 2 star recruit that signed with Nevada. It sure looks like the kid is a beast. Maybe the competition wasn't all that good, I have no idea; but I would have thought a major college would have taken a chance with him and offered, etc. His grades have to be pretty good since Navy offered.

I’m gonna stand with Wiltfong on Walker. But what with Wade @wadc45?

Not Wade but we talk occasionally. I think we have a good shot at Walker but have some ground to cover. We need to hit a home run on the OV but if we do, I wouldn't be shocked to see him in this class. And I think you just take him if he wants in and keep pursuing NPF hard no matter what.
