tOSU Recruiting Discussion

There's a lot of talk and love per the new commit, Dobbins. And it always happens when a new committment rolls in, but let's not forget that we have a RB that can be a 3 down RB and Dobbins is icing on the cake. I can see Dobbins as a HB/Pivot and splitting time at RB similar to Samuel now. Or even being a threat in a RB rotation with Sibley, Williams and MCCall

I think you're really underselling him. He's completely different than Weber, Williams and Sibley with the fact he has the speed to take it to the house. McCall can be a change of pace guy when he's not in the slot. Dobbins shouldn't be undervalued with his rare complete skill set. All 4 can be on the field for all 3 downs but it's Dobbins explosion that separates him from the pack.

You would think that these recruiting services would have evolved by now to the point of not factoring kickers in to rankings. Oh well, it just means that our class is really even better than it says.

With all due respect to the player you are referring to, Dobbins is elite. He's in a different tier at this moment.

Building on this, everyone of our 13 current commits are in their state's top 10 per 247's composite rankings, with the exception of Danny Clark who is #12 in Ohio. We have three of the top nine players in Florida, and the top PK in the country. Here are the states from where we have (a) commit(s), and the in-state rankings of those commits listed in parentheses:

Ohio (1,4,8,9,12)
Florida (2,4,9)
Colorado (2)
Michigan (7)
Nevada (2)
New York (6)
Texas (7)

:banger::rofl:
That's just down right silly when you look at it like that! Almost like we're recruiting in NCAA Football, not real life. If we end up with this class, and the guys who are favored to be S&G, the pressure will be immense on them to win an NC and multiple B1G titles. I can definitely see a number of these kids rising to the occasion

My best updated guess at this 2017 recruiting class (21 man class):

QB Danny Clark
RB Todd Sibley
RB JK Dobbins

WR Trevon Grimes
WR Jaylen Harris
WR Tyjon Lindsey
TE Matt Dotson
OL Josh Myers
OL Jake Moretti

DE Joshua Kaindoh
DT Jerron Cage
DT Haskell Garrett

DT Fred Hansard/Darnell Ewell/Marvin Wilson
LB/S Brendon White
LB Antjuan Simmons
CB Marcus Williamson

CB Lamont Wade
CB Amir Riep
S Isaiah Pryor
S Jeffrey Okudah
K Blake Haubeil

Trying to find every reason I can to keep the numbers realistic, but the staff is recruiting like we're taking a 25+ man class, and there is absolutely no way that is happening.
--------

As much as NO one on this board wants to see it, I don't think we see Shaun Wade signing with Ohio State. Getting potentially the best tandem of safeties in a recruiting class since the Cooper days and the best DB class since who knows when would lessen the blow, would it to happen. Would absolutely hate to see him end up at Alabama, as he could be a potential AA at the next level. I have Okudah penciled into this class pretty hard, as he's actively recruiting fellow Texan Marvin Wilson to Ohio State. Recent camps have me firmly believing Pryor will stay at S and not switch to LB.

The recruiting options have seemed slim at LB, and with the potential haul at DB, I think Brendon White gladly finds a home at LB in this class. With White and Simmons at LB, I think we're done there. So much potential with those two.

Lots of options if we were to take a 3rd DT (smart bet to say that's going to happen), and those three would be my guesses at the 1-technique. IMO, any of those three guys at 1-Tech would be a triple or a home run. At DE, it is SO smart for the staff to say "we're only taking one guy in this class at your position, and we want you to be THE guy" to Kaindoh on the heels of Joey Bosa heading to the NFL. We'll see what happens there, but definetly looks like he's going to head north for school. Between that and LJ pulling the strings in his recruitment, gotta think Ohio State will be in it until the end for Kaindoh.

We could conceivably be done with OL, as we have 1 graduating, 1 that could very well leave early (Billy Price), and a full three-deep at every position on the line. If we take one more, Robert Hanisey and Micah Clark look like possible takes. If we could sway Isaiah Wilson from the dark side, you don't say no to him.

Didn't think we we were originally going to take a TE in this class, as we had 6 on the team. With having taken 3 TEs in the last class, I'd like to see us skip the TE position in this one, but AJ Alexander to WR, Rashod Berry to DE, and a recent offer to Jake Marwede tell us to expect a TE in this class.

WR is where the real fireworks are still to be had in this class. If Trevon Grimes went anywhere other than Ohio State at this point, that would be a shocker. It's also just a matter of time with Jaylen Harris. The third WR in this class is where the most intrigue is, and Tyjon Lindsey sounds more and more like a viable option, if distance really does not matter to him. He would be an elite slot that would complement the two twin towers in this class perfectly. If Tyjon heads elsewhere, still some FANTASTIC options out there like Emmanuel Greene, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Jeff Thomas, and a host of 4*s in-state (Lynn Bowden, Danny Davis, & JaVonte Richardson), among others.

Despite being full-up numbers-wise in the offensive backfield, we're still continuing to recruit some elite guys like Cam Akers, Trey Sermon, and Najee Harris, as well as Tate Martell at QB. I don't think anything will come of the recruitment of any of those guys. If something did though, it would create an interesting situation that would likely need to be rectified one way or the other before signing day.

------

If this all were to happen (and it's pretty darn realistic), even without Shaun Wade, Urban Meyer would be introducing the world to the first #1 national recruiting class with less than 25 members since 2005 (USC) and the best overall recruiting class since 2014 (Alabama), according to 247 composite

I love this list as its very realistic and reasonable. The only change I personally would make is at TE. Even though Berry and Alexander are switching positions there is still Hausman, Farrell and Hawkins at TE behind Baugh, for a position that is hardly utilized. I could see the TE schollie going to a 2nd QB, another OL or CB. But that's just my personal opinion. But all in all, great list. The chase for the top talent will be very interesting, because what happens is Akers or Sermon want in?

Pretty much exactly what I have. Great breakdown, if we had GPA's, you would have one. It does seem the staff wants a TE, though it would make little sense given the past classes. I would prefer another WR, DT, or DB, but I am not even going to try to critique the staff...they are so on fire, I just want to sit back and enjoy it. But in terms of projecting, I think instead of Dotson, we add another guy at one of the aforementioned positions.

I'm completely with you guys on the TE recruiting. I felt I had to put it on there based on the shuffling and recent offer, even though we should be good with a 4-deep currently on the team. Best I can guess is on top of the shuffling, maybe the staff isn't also completely 100% sold on Kierre Hawkins being a TE and seeing him possibly as more of a WR

Personally, I'd love to see that spot held for "the 5*/guy you can't say no to", whether that's Shaun Wade, Baron Browning, Marvin Wilson, DPJ, Tate Martell, Isaiah Wilson, or another new offeree
