tOSU Recruiting Discussion

So Urban and staff have a heck of a recruiting tool for kids by just being able to show them the names of all the Buckeyes picked and the records broken for players for drafted. But yet this class will be severely stifled by numbers and will force them to have decide between some of the best recruits in the nation and still balance having a couple of very good in state players...53ae44a3552229814206def5de7a2dbc62a8a5d7e8cea1d1a62927b6d9093244.jpg

Haven't put up a projection in a couple of months, so thought I'd update it... (19 man class)

QB Danny Clark

QB Tate Martell/Kellen Mond
RB JK Dobbins
WR Trevon Grimes
WR Jaylen Harris/Donovan Peoples-Jones
WR Tyjon Lindsey
OL Josh Myers
OL Jake Moretti

DE Chase Young
DT Jerron Cage
DT Haskell Garrett
LB Brendon White
LB Antjuan Simmons
CB Marcus Williamson

CB Lamont Wade
CB Amir Riep
S Isaiah Pryor
S Jeffrey Okudah
K Blake Haubeil

Despite being currently committed, I have Shaun Wade and Todd Sibley (trending towards Pitt) not ending up in this class, though Shaun's recruitment is trending positively with a visit to Columbus with his family soon. As far as the numbers go, I dropped taking a TE in this class, a 3rd DT (player interest has dropped considerably in the last 2 months), and changed Todd Sibley's RB spot to a 2nd QB, which the coaching staff is going hard after. Also, with us getting down to 84 scholarship players on the main roster this week, will be interesting to see if Drue Chrisman nixes the greyshirt and goes on scholarship this fall.

Even before Kaindoh committed to MD, it sounded like Chase Young may have been the guy our staff was targeting harder for the 1 DE spot in this class afterall. Don't sleep on Corey Malone-Hatcher though... Kerry Combs certainly is not.

Jaylen Harris seems to be happy taking his time, though DPJ has recently let the recruiting world know that Ohio State is a realistic possibility, so that makes things interesting. Trevon Grimes should be written into this class in pencil right now after his most recent interview. Not as much talk on the Tyjon Lindsey front, but with Tate Martell now firmly in the picture (!), what a combination THOSE two would be if they decided to come east to Columbus to run Urban Meyer's offense. Don't be surprised if we decided to only take 2 WR's in this class because of numbers, but with that amount of amazing talent, it would be hard to say no to any one of those 4 if they want into this class.

The DB class looks like it has the potential to be an all-timer on paper, but with 3-4 spots left to fill on it, there's still a lot of question marks. I still have Okudah's name written into this class in pencil, Amir Reip isn't the slam-dunk to the in-state school that many would have you believe (but he's still trending towards OSU), and Lamont Wade will take his visits. And don't forget Shaun Wade could still decide that he wants to be a part of this class afterall.

Another big question mark is that they're still a surprising amount of 5* talent out there that are longer shots, but could decide that Ohio State is the place for them when they finally take their official visits and are guys you just don't say no to. LB Baron Browning is the first one that comes to mind, thanks to Jeffrey Okudah and his Texas recruiting prowess. It'll be interesting to see how the staff balances the scholarship numbers and who the staff takes committments from. One thing's for sure though with the numbers the way they are... we aren't going to be taking any developmental projects in this class. They're going to be blue chips from here on out

Like it, except for the part where you don't have an additional DT pencilled in. I think the staff will almost certainly take another one this class to make up for all the misses the last class.

So no longer feeling confident about Cam Akers? I figured if we lost him, we can still keep Sibley

We're in on a number of DT's, but interest on the HS players' part has changed. We're not in Ewell's top 4, Aubrey Solomon's trending towards Alabama, Marvin Wilson was a longshot to begin with, etc. A true 3-technique DT is a real need in this class IMO, but numbers are short and the chances at this point arent great. I've got my fingers crossed that players' interest has waned because the staff isn't pursuing them like they were due to how our current players performed over the spring... but that's pure speculation on my part (and possibly wishful thinking). One to watch here is Jay Tufele out of Utah. I've not watched film on him so not sure if 3-tech or not, but he has yet to narrow things down

As far as Cam Akers goes, he's one of the guys, like Baron Browning, Najee Harris, DPJ, Tate Martell, Darnay Holmes, Marvin Wilson, Lamont Wade, Tyjon Lindsay, etc. that are guys you can't say no to if they want in. My thought is Sibley's gone, whether or not we have a guy to replace him, and Pitt (and Narduzzi) is the hot play right now. With Dunn done at the end of the season, we still have 3 great options at RB in the '17-'18 season with Mikey Weber, Curtis Samuel, and Antonio Williams (who had a surprisingly good spring for a guy who should have been still in HS), plus JK Dobbins. So IMHO, a 2nd RB in this class is a luxury, barring Curtis being our starting RB, putting up Zeke type of production, and leaving early for the league... all of which isn't likely

It all comes down to scholarship numbers. Wish we could take everyone, but we all gotta stay realistic. The staff are the only ones that truly know what the end number is gonna be at this point, and based on one of Urban's spring press conferences, I get the feeling they don't entirely know what that number is going to be either
