tOSU Recruiting Discussion

What is the BPRT's thoughts on the need for a QB in this class with what we have and what is coming in 2017? Could the spot be used for a different need?
My concern is how well Clark fits into what OSU wants to do. If you have some concerns about your 2016 & 2017 QBs, that's a pretty big weakness on your roster. Now OSU will probably get to ride Barrett through 2017 and then Burrow in 2018 & 19, but you still need depth and competition.

Look I absolutely LOVE me some JT but let's not forget Watson was the clear front runner before we moved on. Think of his style when trying to figure out what Urb wants in a QB these days. Very good passer who can make all the throws but who can, if needed, be an effective runner. That's the prototype IMO.
Learning from 2014 QB recruiting
But Stephen Collier, the quarterback Ohio State signed in the 2014 class, wasn't their top target. He actually was the last of six prospects Ohio State offered, and when he accepted the Buckeyes had their man.

It all worked out, but not in the ideal way Meyer and his offensive coordinator initially envisioned. The quarterback prospect they truly couldn't live without was Deshaun Watson, and he earned an Ohio State offer in July of 2012, nearly a year before the other five.

Meyer and Herman waited and waited and waited for Watson. And while they waited, no other scholarships were shipped out. Then Watson committed to Clemson, and the Buckeyes still waited a little longer.

By the time Meyer decided to offer four other targets in May of 2012 – Kyle Allen, Jerrod Heard, Brandon Harris and Zach Darlington – it was too late to gain solid enough positioning to land those elite prospects.
They could have landed Kyle Allen too, but they waited way too long. They also chose to pass on current ND starting QB DeShone Kizer, who auditioned multiple times for a Buckeye offer and then committed to ND when they passed. They gambled multiple times in that class and lost.

They adjusted a year later
"Nowadays kids are committing early, and sometimes you don't get the opportunity," Meyer said. "So we've had to adjust our philosophy a little bit, because (seeing them throw first) was a rule.

"Sometimes we're going to have to adjust, because we're offering quarterbacks now that I don't see throw, and I've never done that before in our career. But you have to, because early offers are out."

So you've seen that adjustment in the 2015 class.

Like with Watson, Ohio State has identified its top target in 2015 – Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson. But unlike last year, there has been no waiting to offer others.

Torrance GibsonPlantation (Fla.) American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson, one of the top quarterbacks in the 2015 class, talks about his recruitment, Ohio State and becoming a more consistent passer.Though summer is still a few months away - usually the prime time for Meyer to see prospects throw at hosted camps – the Buckeyes have offered eight other quarterbacks, including Brandon Wimbush of Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep; Lorenzo Nunez of Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison; Kai Locksley of Baltimore (Md.) Gilman School; and, most recently, Drew Lock of Lee's Summit, Mo. The Buckeyes could take two quarterbacks in the 2015 class
And they got the high upside project in Gibson and well rounded passer with mobility in Burrow.

I think the staff should make a run at Haskins, he spins it so well.

I'm with you there, Haskins was my 1b (1a being Guarantano but the gap is basically zilch in my eyes). He would be tough to pull from MD even with the coaching change but I would like to see us try. Haskins is basically a JT clone...slightly less athletic but better arm/accuracy at this stage.

QB: Tristen Wallace/Dwayne Haskins
RB: Antonio Williams
HB: Demario McCall
WR: Austin Mack
WR: Binjimen Victor/Donnie Corley
Flex: Kierre Hawkins
TE: Luke Farrell
TE: Jake Haussmann
OL: Michael Jordan
OL: Tyler Gerald
OL: Jack Wohlabaugh
OL: Gavin Cupp

DL: Nick Bosa
DT: Malik Barrow
DT: Antwuan Jackson/Rashard Lawrence/Rashan Gary/Backup Plan
DE: Jonathon Cooper
LB: Tuf Borland
LB: Malik Harrison
DB: Wayne Davis
DB: Kareem Felder
DB: Jahsen Wint
DB: Damar Hamlin/Jordan Fuller

P: Drue Chrisman

Ohio State is making a major run at either replacing or supplementing Wallace with Dwayne Haskins at QB this weekend.

Another DB, LB, WR and DT are top priorities.

Jahsen Wint is all but in at DB while Malik Harrison is all but in at LB.

It seems like they would add more at either position if the right guy wants in.

Additional potential LB targets include Mique Juarez and Aaron Hansford while additional DB targets include Damar Hamlin and Jordan Fuller. Adding an additional DB seems much more realistic than another LB.

They are also making a major run at Donnie Corley at WR on his visit this weekend, although MSU has seemed inevitable for him for awhile.

If not Corley, Binjimen Victor is the top target who Ohio State seemingly has an above average shot with. They would probably gladly welcome both into the class if it came to that.

Nate Craig-Myers and Sam Bruce remain major long shots at WR.

At DT you've got Antwuan Jackson deciding between Ohio State and Auburn this Thursday along with Rashard Lawrence who is down to Alabama, LSU and Ohio State.

Ohio State will fight until the end for Rashan Gary and are undoubtedly keeping lines of communication open with other players given that DT is arguably the most important position in the class and it is seemingly an uphill battle with all of the top targets left on the board.

So 23 in the class?

Will be fun down to the end. Any other DTs out there we might make a run at after the top 3. Safety recruiting is a bit interesting now, not sure what's happened there ...
