For those all in a huff about our "slow start" in 2014 recruiting, with Jalyn Holmes commitment we have 11 commits, including (per Rivals):
The #10 and #12 LBs
The #12 and #21 OLs
The #3 DE
The #6 CB
Not to mention four 3-star commits who are highly underranked.
Our average star rating of 3.6 puts us behind only Notre Dame, Georgia, Washington (which has a grand total of three commits), and Clemson. With the way UFM closes, I'd say that on NLOID this class will end up being very, very strong...

Holmes wasn't exactly off the radar for OSU, but this commit came a little bit out of left field. So did Damon Webb's. Last year, Marcus Baugh kind of came out of nowhere and committed unexpectedly.
Following recruiting with Urban as coach is great because you never really know when some big time out of state guy is going to surprise with a commit.
It will be interesting to see how many more of these types of commitments we will get this year.

Just wanted to weigh in real quick after yesterday's news...here's a combination of what I know, what I think I know, what I've read and what I've been told:
Collier - The staff felt that the risk of missing out on Collier was not worth waiting on Harris for. Would they have preferred Harris? Yes. Was that likely going to happen? No. Do they like Collier more than some of the other kids they offered earlier? Absolutely. They would take Collier over Kizer, Darlington, Barker, Henderson, etc. That to me says a lot. Very interested to see how he does at the Elite 11...I have a suspicion that he will get some great reviews out there and you will see his stock shoot up. I have watched his film, listened to Dilfer's comments and read some evaluations...and I have to say I am pretty happy with this commitment. Let's keep in mind this kid has been vetted by some of the best QB coaches around and earned an invited to the finals of the Elite 11 and The Opening. That makes him one of the top 20 QBs in the country according to some talent evaluators. I see him as a big, smart kid who can make all the throws and can effectively run the spread. Dangerous enough with his legs and always falls forward for extra yardage. As many smart people have said...there are no reaches in June. Think how thoroughly the staff evaluated this kid. There are two kinds of players out there...those who can play at OSU and those who can't. The staff feels Collier is one of those who can.
Gesicki - Love this offer. From what I heard was the top athlete at the camp yesterday. Has a perfect frame to add weight, is extremely athletic, has great hands and performed exceptionally well in front of Coach Meyer himself, who know a thing or two about H-back/tight ends. I think it now becomes a race to commit between him and Roberts...and Roberts got the USC offer he wanted and postponed a visit to OSU to make trip to USC. If he comes back from USC without having committed, there's a chance Roberts could fill this spot...if not, I don't think Gesicki's offer comes without some sort of an expiration date. I think we have our TE verbal soon.
McLaurin - Don't know much about this kid but I know one expert who thinks he might be the most underrated kid in the Midwest. His speed is undeniable. He has the hands. He plays against decent competition in Indiana. Coach Smith, Coach Coombs and Coach Meyer [again] thoroughly evaluated this kid in person and decided he can play at OSU. At the Chicago Nike camp he had a SPARQ of 126.96 with a laser 4.48 40, a shuttle of 4.36 and a vertical of 41.6". Couple that with how well he performed in front of the staff yesterday and I get this offer.
Where do we go from here?
Collier is in and I think you can pencil in McLaurin and Gesicki. As for the WRs, I think the staff still pursues Samuel and others...and tries to land one last big time talent at the position. I personally love Samuel but they might place more emphasis on a split end with some size. Will be interesting to see what they do but I am still including Samuel in my predictions for now. If/when Gesicki commits [or if for some reason Roberts beat him to it] you can close the book on TE recruiting. They may still chase Luatau but I think that is a longshot anyways. I think the staff still takes three more OL and targets a big body in the middle of the DL in the form of Shaw, Holley or Elam. Have to imagine there is still at least one more DB commit if not two left in this class (maybe Wilson and another big name). Obviously spots are saved for Kwon, Lattimore and Smith. This class is likely to reach 22-23 based on these recent offers and the fact that the staff got their QB commitment in Collier.
