tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Think Allen is a better passer than Barker and other 2 are much better runners with pretty good arms. I would have been fine with Barker but can't say based on a highlight tape who is the best of the bunch. Coaches did their hw, all I think I can ask for. That and landing 1 of them.

Such a trolling article. ESPN has Michigan in the bag. They hire Wolverine fans as their recruiting reporters and regular reporters for the Ohio State beat. It's rather shameful really.

If any Buckeye fans subscribe to that bastardized version of recruiting coverage, they're wasting their money.
Bournival seems like a nice guy but lacks a clue. Urban said we'd go 20+ in 2014, don't make a mock class for 17 and without a kicker or punter. Don't think that is too much to ask for.

I think a big thing to consider in the 2014 QB talk is JT Barrett, early enrollee. The staff doesn't consider him "filler" material and therefore are not desperate for a QB this year. Regardless who they brought in last year, they were going to be all over Watson if he could be reeled in but beyond that it was clear that they were going to be pretty selective. The reason, is Barrett. Don't forget about him. It's clear the staff hasn't.

With our depth needs at OL, LB and WR I am happy to see us take a selective approach. Heck, I would rather take an additional high 3 star/low 4 star DT than an equally rated QB in this class.

QB is THE team

We can not afford not taking a QB this year. Sure we might be OK, but we don't want to be just OK. We have to have one of the absolute best brought in, have a little bit of time with the coaches and team, and then when the time comes, he steps in. After Miller, after this year, we have a couple of unproven dual treat QB's who can always get hurt or not pan out. I absolutely love the kid from Arizona personally. His accuracy and touch are above and beyond any of the others. He is quick enough to get you first downs. Needs to bulk up a little bit. The thing is with a great passing QB, you don't need him to be a super runner. The defense will be all over the place backed up trying to cover from his pin point throws. He just needs to be mobile enough to escape pressure, and get you the few yards when he needs to and he needs to be able to take few hits. The other two guys are pretty accurate too, and their release is quick, but the arizona kid is accurate and just smooth and natural. He places it in stride...deadly! I have no doubt he will end up in the NFL if he holds up physically and mentally.

With a moniker like mine, you can probably guess that I value leadership, grit, and intelligence over most other qualities in a quarterback. I sense that Watson has all of these qualities in addition to being a good to great athlete and passer. So I am bummed that, at this point, he seems headed to Clemson. Fortunately, however, I sense that Barrett also has all of these qualities in addition to the athleticism. I wouldn't bet the farm on him (especially in the wake of his injury), but I do have high hopes for him. And you never know - Cardale could end up beating all of these guys out if he continues progressing. Stranger things have happened.

In short, I feel pretty good about our QB situation and would be more than satisfied if any of the '14 QBs with a truly committable offer signed on the dotted line.

With Urban's emphasis on playmakers, this is even more true, imo.

With the #1 backup a senior, and the starter a junior, if Braxton goes pro (wins the heisman & national championship this year), who do we got?

A redshirt soph (Cardale), who may have potential, but certainly wasn't on display at spring game, a 4* qb who is going through knee rehab, and a handful of walk-ons, is potentially what tOSU is looking at if the above happens.

Gotta take a headline qb this year. Most qb's need at least one year to adapt to the college 'pace' of play, let alone learn fundamentals to excell at the college level. Schlister, Braxton, Pryor, all played as freshmen, and would have benefited significantly from waiting a year, simply learning.

Take a playmaker, and hopefully give him a year to mature. And the transition from great HS qb to great college qb is a crapshoot anyway....I watch who's 'popular' out there, wants to come to OSU, etc. and scratch my head why not take them now, but then realize Urb and his coaches are paid very big bucks to make these choices, so project potential out to being that next great qb....isn't there an app for that?

I really wanted Barker but this staff did their homework and saw all of these guys...and saw Barker throw multiple times in person. I don't really agree with it 100% but UFM and Herman know their QBs in and out, so I defer to their judgement. In all honesty, after I saw Allen's junior film I can't disagree with them at all...Allen is right behind Watson for the top QB in the country imo and is much closer to being ready to play at the next level. I don't think Braxton will go pro regardless of how well he plays this year (he wants to stick with this staff and team all the way through) but if he gets hurt his senior year, I love Barrett if he recovers well from his injury and Cardale has a chance to be special. But if that doesn't pan out, I think Allen will honestly be ready to go from Day 1, provided he bulks up a little his redshirt year.

Gotta take a headline QB every year IMO. The previous regime danced on a razor's edge when it came to QB recruiting. They'd only go after top guys every two years it seemed, and only close on those players every three years or so. They backfilled with some developmental targets and save Todd Boeckman, often ended up with QBs who were a year too green when they took over the starting job.

And let's face it, the caliber of QB that Ohio State should be going after will be guys that should expect to play 2-3 seasons as a starter. Since there's only one QB on the field, that means some of the guys you bring in are going to lose the competition and end up as backups. Many of those guys will transfer because they are (or should be) good enough to start at other schools. If you opt to take fewer than one quality QB per year you're really not going to avoid that attrition, you'll just be left with fewer and younger players at the position when it inevitably shakes out.

I'd love to see the day where if/when Ohio State has a RS Soph transfer out because a junior won the job, that they'll have a highly touted RS freshman still on board who still expects to start for at least two years down the road, rather looking to somebody who is still in HS at the time to fill the gap eventually.

Ohio State football: Meyer is casting wide net for quarterback
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Sunday May 5, 2013 6:18 AM

Zack Darlington had several scholarship offers in hand, but then came the call he had been waiting for late last week.

Summoned from his sixth-period class to the office of his father, Rick, the football coach at Apopka (Fla.) High School, he found out Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was on the phone. In the next few seconds, Meyer told Zack he was what the Buckeyes were looking for in a quarterback and formally offered a scholarship to be part of the 2014 recruiting class.

?Honestly, I don?t even think thrilled is the right word, it?s not good enough for what I am feeling,? Darlington said. ?I?d say ecstatic, every great word that could come to mind, that?s what I?m feeling. It?s something I?ve been working toward for a long time.

?And when Ohio State started showing the interest early, that?s the offer I wanted to get because it shows the work is paying off.?

Ohio State?s homework also is showing. There was no secret Meyer and his staff hoped to flip the nation?s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback prospect, DeShaun Watson, of Gainesville, Ga., from his long-standing commitment to Clemson. But it became apparent at the start of last week that Watson didn?t share the same interest in OSU.

Meyer and his staff, led by offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman, worked quickly to develop other options in the quest for a quarterback in the 2014 class.

They offered Kyle Allen of Scottsdale, Ariz., a standout in their summer camp a year ago and considered one of the elite pro-style quarterback prospects nationally, and followed with offers to dual-threat quarterbacks Darlington, who led his team to a Florida state title last season, and Brandon Harris of Bossier City, La. Herman watched all three on different days during their schools? spring football drills. Ohio high schools aren?t allowed to hold spring practices.

It was the recruiting equivalent of casting a national dragnet. It was newsworthy because no position is more vital to a football team than quarterback, especially in Meyer?s spread offense. That the three players Meyer and Herman identified seem quite different in ability is missing the point.

?The best quarterback,? Meyer said a couple of weeks ago when asked what he seeks for the position.

And what did he tell Darlington?

?He told me they?re not only looking for someone who is going to be great, but who is also going to make the team great,? Darlington said. ?That?s what I want to be able to do, not only to do great things but to bring my team with me, to push them ahead of me and keep everything going.?

But Meyer wants more than just a leader.

?A quarterback that can run,? Meyer said.

I like everything I'm hearing from all 3 guys, but I'm wondering if there's a pecking order at this point since all could fit our offense in different ways but could still get us positive results. With all the weapons we're acquiring I'm sure all 3 could do some serious damage.

I just would love for once to see a legit passer... I just love Allen's film. I'm not trying to peg him as the next anyone, just the best Allen he can be which will be something new and I am sure, quite impressive. I would like to see a natural passer with poise get some time with Herman and maybe a summer session with Whitfield out in California before he sees action and I think it could be dynamite.
