tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Been awhile and I need a quick study break, so my best guess/wishlist for this class assuming 22 (I believe that was the # the staff has said they were thinking):

1. QB: Drew Barker- I see Watson sticking with Clemson as of now, but of course if/when Morris leaves and McMillan/Kitt pick OSU possibly along with a couple other GA guys, I could see him hopping on board. Watson is by far my top choice but if we miss on him, I still love Barker. Great talent and he is such a competitor.
2. RB: Joe Mixon- Aside from Hood, who is leaning hard elsewhere, Mixon is my favorite pure RB and with Campbell already aboard, we only need to add one RB in this class and Mixon seems very interested. Yes please.
3. RB/WR: Parris Campbell
4. RB/WR: Curtis Samuel- We are in great shape here and Samuel is crazy talented...most underrated prospect for 2014 imo.
5. WR: Marshon Lattimore- Could play DB but I think he is too dangerous with the ball in his hands to use him on defense.
6. WR: Demarre Kitt- Seems like a heavy OSU lean and I think McMillan will get him in this class.
7. TE: Mark Andrews- Might be a WR but either way, I like where we sit with him and he is my favorite target here. Bunting is intriguing behind him and I get the feeling UFM loves Blazevich...I have had the feeling Blazevich ends up in this class for some reason, not sure if we would take Blazevich and Andrews though.
8. OL: Kyle Trout
9. OL: Marcelys Jones
10. Jamarco Jones-Just a matter of time imo. The more I watch Jamarco and look at our needs, I think there is a high possibility we move him inside to guard (see the rest of my OL class and that will make sense to you...otherwise he is a good tackle prospect).
11. OL: Damian Prince- I think we are sitting in GREAT position here and I think a good visit and sit down with the staff could get Damian in this class sooner rather than later. Could play RT or LT but I think he is our future LT.
12. OL: Chad Mavety- Seems to be our best possibility of the two JUCOs but if we could get both, I would NOT rule out UFM taking both. Eluemunor is a great prospect but I see him at Bama or Rutgers unless we make a real move over the summer. Either way, I see whichever JUCO we get stepping in immediately for Jack at LT.
13. OL Alex Bookser/Demetrius Knox: I say the number for OL ideally is 6 if we get the right guys. I am not sure we hit that...I say we get the 5 above and I REALLY like Bookser as a tackle prospect and he seems very interested. Also, we are going to knock the doors down for Knox until NLOID...make no mistake about it, Knox is interested. Another down year for UT and look for movement. I also think Sharpe or Roderick Johnson are possibilities here.
14. DL: Dylan Thompson
15. DL: Lorenzo Carter- Maybe a pipe dream but at one point, many thought he was leaning OSU. All I know is we need a purer pass rusher to add to this class in the Spence mold. If not Carter, I think
16. DT: Chris Williams-I think UFM wants a pure DT in this class, Williams LOVES us, and he is the best at this position we have a shot at imo.
17. LB: Dante Booker- Seems the staff prefers Booker over Garrett to this point...if we have room for both then we take them imo. I really hope we have room for both, I think Garrett is going to be a star.
18. LB: Kyle Berger
19. Star/LB/LEO: Sam Hubbard
20. LB: Raekwon McMillan- All but in the bag and I see him as a starter alongside Trey Johnson and Mike Mitchell SOON.
21. DB: Damon Webb
22. DB: John JuJu Smith- ND is in the lead but he has a high interest in OSU and this is going to go until NLOID in all likelihood, so I think UFM pulls another Bell maneuver and shocks everyone. With Hubbard as a potential Star, a high caliber DB locked up in Webb, and last year's ridiculous class, I think we only want one more DB and it will need to be an elite guy like Smith or Peppers. I want Peppers but he is not trending well at all for us. Tony Brown is another elite guy we would want but I am thinking he stays south, likely LSU.
22.5(ish) DB: Erick Smith- Just realized Smith is likely going to end up in this class..I suppose take out a DL or OL for him here.

- Of course there is alot that can happen...you have to think Kief ends up in this class if he indeed has an OFFER. I really want to see Garrett in this class but seems the staff MIGHT be backing off some, not sure why. Perhaps it is just a momentary lull...however, could mean we are good with Hubbard, Berger, McMillan, and Booker. Other guys I really want to see in this class are Autry, Brown Jr., and Roderick Johnson.

Pretty good list there. You list and mine has a lot of similarities:

QB (1): Obviously are all in for DeShaun Watson (GA). Should Demarre Kitt commit like I expect him too right now, combined with Kwon's high interest in us I think that puts us in great shape IF he visits. Otherwise, I think we set our sights on Brandon Harris (LA). He seems to be #2 in line right now. QB situation is definitely up in the air.

RB/WR (): Parris Campbell (OH) is already committed. I think Derek Kief (OH) and Demarre Kitt (GA) are very close and both will commit before the summer ends. I also think we sit in great shape with Curtis Samuel (NY) and think he will be in the class as a slot back. I also think we'll get Saeed Blacknall (NJ). As for a true running back, I have no idea. I think we'll take one, but I have no idea who it will be. Jonathan Hilliman (NJ) has us atop his list but I don't think he sits as high on our board. There's still probably a chance to flip Jalen Hurd (TN), but I'm not counting on that. I think Joe Mixon (CA) stays our west even though I think he's the number one back on our board.

TE (1?): Don't have a strong feeling that we get Mark Andrews (AZ) or Jeb Blazevich (NC). Think Blazevich stays down south (Ole Miss or UGA) and Andrews out west (Arizona). I'm also not positive we take a TE in this class as it's not necessarily a need. I also think that Sam Hubbard (OH) could potentially play TE.

OL (5): I think five is the number and it's pretty clear on what we want. Marcelys Jones (OH) and Kyle Trout (OH) are two instate studs already committed. Jamarcus Jones (IL) is only a matter of time. I think we sit very well for Damian Prince (MD) who is a monster. Those two will probably commit before the summer ends. Then we'll want to take a JuCo, either Chad Mavety (NY) or Jermaine Eluemunor (PN) whoever commits first as I think we lead for both. There's a possibility they take both JuCos or an OL wants to commit that you don't say now to (Knox, Sharpe, ect) but I think we ultimately take five.

DL (3): Dylan Thompson (IL) is already committed. He is John Simon-esque. A workroom monster and an extremely high motor. After that the DL situation gets a little iffy. I think we will take one more DE and DT but I don't know who those'll be. If I had to pick right now I'd say Chris Williams (GA) for the tackle spot and Jalyn Holmes (VA) for the end. Williams loves us and is teammates with Kitt. If we trail anyone right now it is Ole Miss. Holmes has us in his top 5 and has said he wants to visit really bad. I don't feel that confident about him though. It is also possible that Booker or Hubbard move down here as an end, while Thomas Holley (NY) is another option at the tackle spot.

LB (4-5): Kyle Berger (OH) and Sam Hubbard (OH) are already committed. Both are outstanding and Hubbard is, in my opinion, a potential five star athlete. It is only a matter of time before Dante Booker (OH) joins him. We have led for Raekwon McMillan (GA) since his recruitment started and it would be a shock right now for him to pick any team but OSU. With those four in that is enough for the class, but I could see a player like Clifton Garrett (OH)

DB (3-4): Damon Webb (MI) is in the fold and he is an exceptional talent. Lock down corner. Marshon Lattimore (OH) could play corner or receiver when he gets here (assuming he commits) but I'll put him here for now because that's where he wants to play and he's pretty freaking good at it. I also see Glenville teamate Erick Smith (OH) in this class. That leaves room for possibly one more DB. Could be safety Montae Nicholson (PA), DB Dravon Henry (PA), or a stud national corner like Tony Brown (TX) or Jabrill Peppers (NJ) though I don't see either committing to us.

P(1): We'll take one punter this class. Not sure who it will be.

So to sum up:

Offense: QB (Watson or Harris), Campbell, Kief, Kitt, Blacknall, Hubbard, Jones, Trout, Jones, Mavety, Prince

Defense: Thompson, Williams, Holmes, Hubbard, Berger, Booker, McMillan, Webb, Lattimore, Smith, punter

M. Jones
K. Trout
J. Jones
D. Prince
D. Knox
and maybe a JUCO?

:banger::highfive:
Given that 4 of our OL are graduating next year, and with the depth situation the way it is right now, I'll say we NEED a JUCO. And don't forget Bookser. I don't think the staff will turn him away if he wants to join the gang.

Things are really falling into place for us in OL recruiting now. And just to think that a week ago, I was close to hitting the panic button...

edit: This haul, if it materializes, will put the past 2 scUM OL recruiting classes to shame!

Let me rephrase. It will be better than their 2012 class for sure (whose OL class was vastly overrated), and might be equivalent to their 2013 OL class, at least.

OK. I exagerated... a bit...

How can you be so sure? Face it. Our recruits have roughly the same odds of panning out as theirs. To suggest ours will be better than theirs at this stage in these prospects' career is simply blind optimism, at best.

Austin Roberts is a real possibility as an H-back in this class...

He does look likely, missed mentioning him. Not sure what our odds are with Andrews or if we would take both (I'm thinking Andrews is more of a receiver and Roberts will be an H-Back). Also, I would add Knox to the more likely than not category now. Looks like Knox and M. Jones for guard, J. Jones for either tackle or guard, and Trout and Mavety/Eluemenor at tackle. That would be a SICK OL class...M. Jones is severely underrated imo and Knox might be the best guard prospect in the country, so our future interior would be solid for sure (especially when added with Munger and Gardner). The beautiful thing is that any of J. Jones, Knox, or Trout can play guard or tackle.

I will argue about this with you when we actually HAVE said prospects. Don't want to jinx anything...

Would be really interested to see what the pecking order is at OL, specifically HS vs. JUCO. The JUCO kids would be good enough to play the moment they step on campus, but only give you two years. The HS kid, if he pans out, sits for a year and may potentially give you three good years (like Decker). With two highly ranked JUCOs in Mavety and Eluemunor (who can play at any position other than center) looking hard at us, would you take them over a Bookser or Knox?

For 2014, I'm seeing Decker at LT, Farris preferably at one of the guard spots, Boren/Elflein at C, and that's really it. Hopefully the Dodson's and the Lisle's will pan out, but since the JUCO kids graduate in Dec., the coaching staff doesn't have the luxury to drag on the process until bowl practice to evaluate player progressions. Again, be really interested to know what the big board is like.

I hope there isn't a situation where the staff has to choose between a JUCO OL and a high-schooler. I think we need that immediate player for the 2014 season from the JUCO ranks, but I think we also need to get young guys in the OL pipeline for 2016 - 2018. I'd rather see another position group get shorted in lieu of another OL.
