tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I do as well, but who is still realistically on our radar as of now? I thought we would pick up a few in the 2014 class instead

I don't think waiting until 2014 is a viable option for OT. It's currently the weakest unit on the field, struggling just to fill the lines for two full rotations, and we'll have lost Fragel, Hall, Linsley, Mewhort, and Norwell by the time the 2014 kids get on campus. I would say bringing in OT in the 2013 class is the absolute highest priority. All of this talk about bringing in playmakers won't mean squat if we can't protect Braxton long enough for him to get the ball to them.

I don't know about weakest unit, Mewhort has played great and Fragel has been pretty good.

We pretty much know Decker is going to be a starter(probably starting RT next year and maybe LT after that) and likely really good. Then there is Dodson and Lisle and if Baldwin is doing well at tackle then don't think it's that important for another in 2013. If they don't have any faith in Baldwin or if Dodson is struggling then a tackle becomes more important for the 2013 class as you don't really wanna rely on a true freshman.

They obviously want Johnson and Meadows just visited so think a tackle is on their list. Either way I think we'll be fine. I'm a little more worried about safety right now than OT but sure that will be fixed soon as well. A lot of people point to OL but I think safety has been a position we could be doing much better at than we have the last 5-6 years. Kurt was a stud and AA in my book his senior year but besides that there has been a lot of inconsistency and struggle.

Add to Gunner's opining, Boren seems to be a lock at center, (Bobek, a 4*, VHT center transfered because he was passed by Boren), Joey O'Conner, who was also a 4*, VHT guard, plus a couple of the #2's that are there now. I don't really see any great OT's (unless Meyer pulls a steal/switch), but just some good high schoolers that may or may not make the leap to a top flight D-I team.

The 2014 O-line candidates should be licking their chops to sign with the Buckeyes and get some early playing time, and with Urban's national appeal, he should be able to pull these guys in. They'll be watching the line play of tOSU this year and next, to see where/how they fit in.

From the big chair, the future looks promising, but until it happens, we all get nervous and jerky. Remember, those linemen are re-learning how to be linemen, from the weight room to the field, and some will rise to the top and others won't. I'm betting that most will rise.....

Yes we need OL depth... but does the staff want to spend a schollie on someone they aren't sold on just to fill a need, or use that schollie to get someone who they really want... I say that unless Johnson wants in, we move on from OL this year and focus on next year. Spend the energy and time on the 2014 OLinemen that the staff really want.

I would agree with this.

I think linebacker is our weakest position currently.
And I would partially agree with this. Not sure how anyone can argue that OL is the thinnest TODAY but LB is right there too. O'connor is hurt isn't he? Decker can play today but isn't a starter, neither is Dodson. I think LB is also very thin. Not coincidentally both OL and LB have failed to impress me so far. Safety is probably the 3rd thinnest poistion group and has also been pretty suspect this year. Funny how depth and performance seem to run together. So just give me Johnson, Mitchell and Bell and I will be nice and comfy  Seriously, those 3 with Lewis, Gibson and either Quick or Foster would be an absolutely sick finish.

Tracy Sprinkle and Zeke Elliot are the steals of the class. Tracy has been tearing it up this season. And Zeke is a perfect fit for this offense. I can't wait to see him and Marshall on the field together. They can both take handoffs and catch the ball well. Urb will be able to confuse defenses with those two.

With the 2012 class in Columbus already and the way the 2013 class is shaping up on defense, especially with the commitment of Lewis, I'm wondering if there is any possibility we run a 3-4 scheme or a variation some times with the skill sets we have? In this class, Bosa and Sprinkle are ideal SDE's, while Hill is an ideal NG and Price could go either NG/SDE. Plus Schutt is a perfect NG and Washington/Pittman could be great jumbo SDE's.

Only real issue is if we have the right LB's...Lewis and Josh Perry are perfect on the edge, but Perkins and Lee are a tad undersized there as of now. Either way, this formation doesn't look bad on paper, especially if we get Mitchell. If we could steal one of Trey Johnson/McMillan (unlikely) or possibly Worley (he has the frame) could go outside. Plus, McMillan, Booker, and/or Garrett would fit nicely in '14.

As a disclaimer, I am in no way suggesting that we would switch to the 3-4 as our base D, rather that we have the skill sets and body types to try it out some.

SDE: Adolphus Washington, Tracy Sprinkle

NG: Tommy Schutt, Michael Hill, Billy Price? (could wind up at G or SDE)

SDE: Se'Von Pittman, Joey Bosa

OLB: Jamal Marcus, Tyquan Lewis, Darron Lee

MLB: Camren Williams

MLB: Luke Roberts, Mike Mitchell?

OLB: Josh Perry, David Perkins
