tOSU Recruiting Discussion

With the 2012 class in Columbus already and the way the 2013 class is shaping up on defense, especially with the commitment of Lewis, I'm wondering if there is any possibility we run a 3-4 scheme or a variation some times with the skill sets we have? In this class, Bosa and Sprinkle are ideal SDE's, while Hill is an ideal NG and Price could go either NG/SDE. Plus Schutt is a perfect NG and Washington/Pittman could be great jumbo SDE's.

Only real issue is if we have the right LB's...Lewis and Josh Perry are perfect on the edge, but Perkins and Lee are a tad undersized there as of now. Either way, this formation doesn't look bad on paper, especially if we get Mitchell. If we could steal one of Trey Johnson/McMillan (unlikely) or possibly Worley (he has the frame) could go outside. Plus, McMillan, Booker, and/or Garrett would fit nicely in '14.

As a disclaimer, I am in no way suggesting that we would switch to the 3-4 as our base D, rather that we have the skill sets and body types to try it out some.

SDE: Adolphus Washington, Tracy Sprinkle

NG: Tommy Schutt, Michael Hill, Billy Price? (could wind up at G or SDE)

SDE: Se'Von Pittman, Joey Bosa

OLB: Jamal Marcus, Tyquan Lewis, Darron Lee

MLB: Camren Williams

MLB: Luke Roberts, Mike Mitchell?

OLB: Josh Perry, David Perkins

Why would we ever run a 3-4 if were loaded on the DL and not so loaded at LBer?

He could play OLB in that scheme, major oversight on my behalf...occasional 3rd down end.

And we may or may not have the LB's for that scheme, just saying the DL is ideal for it if the LB's fell into place in this class. Plus, Lewis would be a LB in this scheme.

I always thought the base OSU D was considered a 4-3/3-4 Hybrid anyway. They usually run a 4-3 under, right? With the SAM LB up on the LOS almost like a DE, and the LEO/VIPER standing up and can either rush or drop on any given play. Seems like the kind of SSDEs they recruit are always almost tackles / 5-techniques anyway (Heyward, Simon, Bennett, Washington). They basically run a 3-4 when they're not in the nickel package.

Typical Espin and their crap! Rating the Buckeye's as the... oh... the 5th best recruiting class. Well still, it's not like their analysis is worth anything! Saying the team is addressing needs at defensive back, building up the DL, still has needs at OL and WR... huh. I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

I think this guy should talk to the BP Recruiting Team instead of the gags from 11 Warriors:wink:

I was recently afforded the opportunity to talk with three of the preeminent writers covering Ohio State football recruiting for the independent blog, Eleven Warriors ? Alex Gleitman, Derek Young, and Miles Joseph. These three were very generous with their time and I cannot thank them enough for taking the time out of the busy schedules to spend some time with me.

Ohio State's 2013 class currently has 16 commitments. How many more spots are available in this class? Who are the top targets and "must gets"?

Gleitman:I think there are 4-6 spots still available in this class, so 20-22 total. I think Tyquan Lewis (announcing 9/20) will be in to make 17 and I still believe Mike Mitchell is in to make 18. After that I see Donovan Munger and Shelton Gibson as in as long as academics check out, with Chris Worley and Vonn Bell also being legitimate possibilities. That would be 22 players right there. Of course there are other targets on the board, but in my opinion, the biggest priority is adding at least one more receiver.

Joseph:I think there are 4-6 spots left in the 2013 class. If I had to guess, the class closes with Tyquan Lewis, Shelton Gibson, Chris Worley, Vonn Bell, Mike Mitchell, and someone no one is talking about right now.

Young:The class could hover around the "22" mark in my opinion. Further attrition will probably happen once the season ends enabling the class to grow a bit more. Top targets will be at the linebacker and wide receiver positions. Those athletes include Mike Mitchell, Tyquan Lewis (who will be committing to Ohio State the 20th of this month more than likely), Shelton Gibson, and James Quick. Others that will be sought after are Marquez North, Vonn Bell, and Dorian Johnson. Courtney Love, a Nebraska commit from Youngstown, OH, was also a surprise visitor at the Cal game.

I actually though this was the most balanced and accurate report I have seen from ESPiN I have seen (not saying much, I know). They hit on our most talented players and identified our weaknesses, save for offensive tackle.

On that score, there better be one more OT in this class. I kept seeing projections without one but I don't think the staff will be comfortable with Lisle (and I mean in numbers, not talent). If we don't get Johnson, I see us aggressively pursuing other commits...issue is that there is hardly anyone left uncommitted at tackle.

This is a down year for tackles. There's only 1 5* tackle this year.

I thought it was a very fair and objective analysis and rating.

Currently there is one spot remaining in the 2013 class barring attrition. If the class ends up at 22 that means that 4 players on the current roster with eligibility remaining won't be returning. While that is certainly a possibility, it's hard for me to imagine that the coaches already know who those players are. Therefore the spots can only be filled once the attrition happens. It creates a false impression to say we've got 5 or 6 spots left as it implies that we could take 5 or 6 verbals right now if we wanted to. It's simply not the case.

They can take as many verbals as they want. If I'm not mistaken, the scholarships don't need to be available until the recruits officially become part of the program.
