Nine of the 24 signees are already starters/major contributors (Barrett, Elliott, Marshall, Wilson, Price, Bosa, Apple, Lee, Bell). Bosa is already an All American, and Barrett, Elliott, Lee, Bell, and Apple (at least) look like potential future All Americans. This class could rival (or exceed) the great class of 2002 (Troy Smith, Clarett, Hawk, Carpenter, Holmes, Mangold, etc.).

IN PURSUIT OF A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, OHIO STATE'S 2013 CLASS MIGHT BE AS IMPORTANT NOW AS IT WAS TWO YEARS AGO

When it comes to the great class debate, J.T. Barrett and Raekwon McMillan don’t exactly see eye-to-eye.

Each has their own opinion about whose is better — Barrett’s 2013 group or McMillan’s 2014 one — and neither side gives an inch when the topic gets discussed.

“I don’t think he really wants to go there,” Barrett says.

Recruiting services had them ranked similarly — the 2013 group as the No. 2 class nationally and the 2014 one as No. 3 — but in Barrett’s mind, the two aren’t all that comparable.

“Me and Raekwon get in little fuss fights about it,” Barrett joked. “He tries to compare his class, the 2014 class, against the 2013 class, and I said, ‘Brother, it’s really not comparable.’"

"He always talks about this year and says, ‘Where’s your class at?’ I’m like, ‘Man, if you really want to talk about it, a lot of my classmates are in the NFL.’”

Ohio State football’s 2013 recruiting class turned into one of the best ever

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In April 2016, a picture from 2012 began spreading amongst Ohio State fans on Twitter.

It featured director of player personnel Mark Pantoni smiling next to recruits Darron Lee, Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott and Eli Apple, all of whom were visiting for the Buckeyes’ game against Nebraska.

After three seasons of college football, all four became first-round NFL draft picks in 2016. Bosa went No. 3 to the Chargers, Elliott went No. 4 to the Cowboys, Apple went No. 10 to the Giants and Lee went No. 20 to the Jets.

That alone would have been an outrageous tally for one recruiting class, but the 2013 group added two more first-round picks — cornerback Gareon Conley at No. 24 in 2017 and center Billy Price at No. 21 in 2018. It also added a pair of second-round picks in safety Vonn Bell (2016) and defensive end Tyquan Lewis (2018).

Eight players — nearly one-third of that 25-player recruiting class — became first- or second-round picks in the NFL draft. Those players formed the top end of a class that will go down as not only one of the best in Ohio State history but one of the best at any school in the recruiting rankings era.

“Looking back, that class might have seven or eight 5-stars if you re-ranked it today,” BuckeyeGrove.com recruiting analyst Marc Givler said. “You hope one-third of your class starts for you for a year or two. To not only get that but get elite play out of that much of your class is incredibly unusual.”

The final tally for the 2013 class is staggering. The 25 players combined for 463 starts at Ohio State — 201 more than the 25 players in the Class of 2012. Over five years, Ohio State went 61-8, won two Big Ten titles and a College Football Playoff National Championship. Three of those 25 players became All-Americans, six became Ohio State captains, eight became NFL draft picks and — perhaps most incredibly — 20 either graduated, fulfilled their eligibility or left early for the NFL.

Cont'd ...

1. CLASS OF 2013 • 23 ENROLLEES • NATIONAL RANK: NO. 2 • SCORE: 303.35
Urban Meyer’s first full class was an instrumental part of Ohio State's 2014 national championship season. Five-star safety Vonn Bell was the class's top-rated signee as Meyer beat out the SEC for the prized defender. Middletown athlete Jalin Marshall was also a five-star and – believe it or not – Joey Bosa was a measly four-star and the class's third-best signee.

Four-star tailback Ezekiel Elliott is now perhaps the best pure rusher in the National Football League. The class also included Eli Apple, J.T. Barrett, Gareon Conley, Marcus Baugh, Billy Price, and Tyquan Lewis. If you're a fan of the productive three-star signings, then you'll be happy to know that things worked out quite well for both Darron Lee and Chris Worley.

The class did include a few signees that didn't work out so well. Mike Mitchell was a freakishly athletic linebacker, but a family member's health problems led to a transfer to Texas Tech. He has since moved to Florida, bulked up to 270 pounds, and most recently played for the NAIA's Southeastern University.

Dayton's Cameron Burrows was the No. 2 player in Ohio behind Marshall. Injuries plagued his Ohio State career which ended with 31 tackles for four pass breakups. Centerville's Evan Lisle eventually transferred to Duke after spending his time in Columbus as a backup lineman. Cleveland's Donovan Munger saw his career come to an unfortunate end due to a blood clot issue.

Here's hoping the 2020 class is even better!!!!
