tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Gantz is a highly rated K/P. I'm not going to get my hopes up, but if anyone can do it, our guy can. One would think that he'd be in line for a scholarship as soon as one becomes available...

This works. Cincinnati offered him, so according to many in SW Ohio, he is better than the punter from Florida. What I like is that he evidently turned down Cincinnati.

Those in Cincy might want to follow recruiting just a tad more closely. Townsend was one of the top punters in the entire country (Scout had him #2). Andrew Gantz doesn't even have a profile on Rivals and his Scout profile has him as unranked...his offer list was Cincinnati, Portland State, and Utah.

Not saying Gantz isn't talented or won't work out, but that "he is better than the punter from Florida" statement is just sour grapes.

I'm from Cincinnati and I follow recruiting pretty closely. I too would have to question anyone who claimed that Gantz is better than Townsend. Gantz, however, is not chopped liver. Given our current situation @ punter coupled with what happened on NSD, I'd be thrilled to see Gantz don the scarlet and gray.

Kohl's Professional Camps ranked Townsend as the #3 P and Gantz as the #21 K. It is not insignificant that this service lists him as a 5-star either. I know we shoot for the stars here, but I'll take the #21 kicker + Wilson/Clark/Bell any day of the week.

Andrew continues to get better, his charts were great at the Southern Showcase Camp in May, he kick offs very well for a smaller athlete, great leg speed, brings great energy on KO's makes up for size with leg speed.

Just poorly written sarcasm that was too complex. If Cincinnati fans believe their team is better than tOSU, then it follows that they claim their players and offer holders are better.

Meanwhile, on a more positive note:

Butch Jones and Andrew Gantz are not strangers.

For the past few years while Jones coached Cincinnati, Gantz -- a 5-foot-9, 170-pound kicker from Dayton, Ohio, would camp with the Bearcats. The two got to know each other and developed a relationship.

On Thursday, the three-star kicker and No. 8 kicker in the country according to 247Sports, accepted a preferred walk-on offer to join Jones and his new staff at the University of Tennessee. He's also rated as high as No. 6 in the nation, and his highlight video shows him hitting 50, 55 and 60 yard field goals. He was a member of Chris Sailer Kicking "Event Elite" top 12 kicker as well [whatever that is.]

Gantz had an offer from Utah and other smaller schools. He is known for having a good, strong leg and a quick swing, which is something that has plagued Michael Palardy during his time at UT. Gantz will compete with Palardy and George Bullock for placekicking duties this next year and especially in the future. He is also an exceptional kickoff specialist.

According to Sailer's website:

"Andrew is an outstanding kicker. He is a great athlete that kicks with nice consistency. Field goals are near the top of his class and kickoffs are D1 ready. A fine young man with a great attitude and work ethic. Kicks well under pressure. Has all the tools to excel at the college level. Is going to be a fine college kicker. Great pick up for Tennessee.

This is probably GBW M fans trolling, but in their 5-page thread regarding Townsend, one poster mentioned OSU going after J.J. McGrath, their preferred walk-on K/P for 2013. Here's some info in case anything ever develops.

M adds McGrath as preferred walk-on

Essentially, McGrath would walk-on as a freshman and earn a scholarship as RSFR...was contemplating greyshirting as of 18 Jan. Story mentions he has MSU, OSU and ND alums in his family. and was a Spartan fan growing up. Could be more of K/KO guy, though he did average 41 yards per punt.

ESPiN link so here's entire article:

Big Ten coaches and athletic directors have formally requested that the NCAA put the brakes on new proposed recruiting rules that would allow unlimited contact and mailings to high school prospects.

Conference administrators issued a statement objecting to the new rules after a regularly-scheduled league meeting in Park Ridge, Ill. on Monday.

"We have serious concerns whether these proposals, as currently written, are in the best interest of high school student-athletes, their families and their coaches," the statement reads. "We are also concerned about the adverse effect they would have on college coaches, administrators and university resources."

The NCAA board of directors approved a set of proposals last month that would, among other things, allow coaches to have contact recruits as much as they wanted through text messaging and social media; repeal all limits on the amount of printed materials schools could mail to prospects; and permit coaches to begin contacting prospects during the summer of their sophomore years. Many of the proposals are scheduled to go into effect this summer.

The Big Ten said in its statement that "the timeline proposed for implementation of the proposals does not allow sufficient time ... to thoughtfully consider the impact of the proposals."

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said the coaches and athletic directors voted unanimously on their request to table the proposals.

"Most of it is we'd like to have an opportunity to have dialogue to discuss the impact and have sufficient time and be able to look at the consequences that may or may not happen because of these proposals," Fitzgerald said. "A little more time to discuss, and at the same time, be able to find solutions together to make these proposals and make recruiting better."

Fitzgerald said the Big Ten would like to create a group of coaches who can work with the NCAA on crafting better recruiting legislation.

Several Big Ten coaches voices their concern about the new recruiting rules last week on national signing day. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he would write a letter to every FBS coach in the country to raise his objections.

"Could you imagine what's going to be rolling into kids' driveways?" Meyer said. "Fatheads and magnets -- it's nonsense. ... I don't agree with that at all."

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said he was worried about the effect on high school players.

"They are going to be concentrating on things they shouldn't be concentrating on," Pelini told reporters Wednesday. "That is academics, being the best football player they can be, that's developing as a young man and enjoying his high school career.

"The more time a kid is sitting on his phone texting and on the telephone and all the other things, that is [doing] the kids, the high schools and high school coaches a disservice."

Gantz' is an interesting story- was a lock to Boise State until they pulled his scholly and brought in a JuCo. He had turned down other offers to be a Bronco, now he's looking at grayshirts and preferred walk on situations.

Great kid, IMHO.

Free 24/7 - Best classes by position- defense

Defensive Back

There were several terrific defensive back classes signed in 2013, but this one came down to Ohio State and Alabama with the Buckeyes receiving the nod. Urban Meyer and staff put together a terrific class with talent at every position. While five-star Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland) is the headliner and especially after his signing day announcement, the trio of corner prospects is eye catching to say the least. Eli Apple (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern), Cameron Burrows (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) and Gareon Conley (Massillon, Ohio/Washington) are al talented and possess different strengths. Add in four-star safety Jayme Thompson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and Ohio State inked five Top247 defensive backs.

:horse:

Just wanted to get this in one last time. This class could easily go down as one of the best ever. The quality of players and versatility is just ridiculous. :banger::banger::banger:

*And I seriously don't think it has total set in yet to me. Time will tell. It's funny because if you listen to Urban lately what he has been preaching is "it's all up to the coaching now." Me thinks he knows too. On a side note, I think a pipeline of studs helps keep your coaches on board. Who wouldn't want to see the potential of these guys?

** Second side note......mid Feb sucks.

Here's today's dose of today's meaningless and sloppy recruiting rankings.

After all the worry about linebacker, SI says tOSU has the third best linebacker class (curiously counting Worley as a linebacker):
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/co...tion-rankings-recruiting-2013/?sct=uk_bf3_a10

SI says that tOSU has the third best DB class, but leaves out Worley and Lee.

I guess the D-line did not have enough "names", though I am impressed with them.

Then SI gets downright EPSN-ish and says tOSU has the third best "athlete" class, somehow lumping it into defense and listing only Jalin and Lee.

tOSU was shut out of rankings on offense, but regrettably, tSUN got rated #1 on o-line, #5 at tight end, and #5 at running back:
