tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Here are my thoughts on Coach Meyer's "method of madness".

First, Coach Meyer will not offer Michigan-level kids just because they are from Ohio and bleed scarlet and grey. Coach Meyer is going to pursue kids who can complete with the SEC heavyweights and win national championships, and who will return Ohio State to truly elite status.

Coach Tressel often did favor Ohio kids, and as a result he ended up with quite a few borderline talents. While Tressel's strategy forced Michigan to offer even lower level Ohio prospects, it did not really maximize Ohio State's potential, because the staff were pursuing less-talented local kids in lieu of more talented national kids.

Second, although a certain Ohio State "insider" seems to think that Brady Hoke is the second coming of Bo Schembechler, in fact Hoke has merely returned Michigan's recruiting to the level that it was under Lloyd Carr ... that is, not good enough to beat Ohio State on a consistent basis. Michigan will recruit well under Hoke, but they will continue to lag in elite talent as compared to Ohio State. Just compare the teams' 2012 recruiting classes - while the overall talent level of the two classes is almost equal, Ohio State has far more players with elite talent, and those players will be the difference between the two programs going forward. And the trend continues in 2013, with Ohio State simply refusing to pursue kids who do not project as elite athletes at the college level.

Third, while filling up your recruiting class in March may give you something to crow about in the off-season, it doesn't necessarily help you in the long run - it's kind of like returning the open kickoff for a touchdown, and we all know how those contests can sometimes turn out. In fact, it can be rather risky filling up your class too soon, as you don't know how your commitments will fare during their senior years, and you don't have as much room for the "sleeper" prospects and "late bloomers" who inevitably emerge. While Michigan has a big recruiting lead over Ohio State now, they have accomplished their lead largely with players who were not offered by the Buckeyes, and there is still more than enough time for the Buckeyes to recover with even better prospects.

Finally, the 2013 recruiting class presents some unique challenges for Ohio State, one being that there are only about fifteen slots currently available for this class, and five of those slots have already been filled. Although there has been some attrition since Coach Meyer took over, there will likely be more attrition after spring practice ... but until that attrition actually takes place, the staff has to be careful with offers due to the low number of slots available. Moreover, Coach Meyer has not yet been able to coach the players currently on the team, so in some sense he doesn't really know what he has to work with. After the end of spring practice, the staff will have a better idea of how many slots they have available, and which positions they need to target.

As an Ohio State fan, just ignore the chatter coming from Michigan Man right now - it never really stops anyway, even when the Wolverines are in the midst of a 3-9 season - because it will at least die down a bit as our class gradually eclipses theirs, just like it did in 2012.

Michigan is recruiting to win the B10 and OSU is recruiting to win NC's...I agree with Jeff

Been trying to get this point across ever since "early verballing" became all the rage.

Here's something else to keep an eye on. I'm too lazy to check the dates, but the state of Florida's high school spring football season is coming up. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see some new names become "hot" once evaluations are done, and the Bucks become players for them.

It's a long road to February, 2013.

What I believe Urbie (That's what I call him) is up to is this...

He's going to take nothing but No*'s. That's right. No stars. He's going to take HS football players like I was. Overweight and with two bad knees at 15 years old. Then, he's going to beat TSUN by forty playing only those kids. His ego is out of control...but what can you say when he backs it up.

With Elliott on board is RB recruiting shut down for 2013?

We've heard from people who know that Ohio State was telling RBs they were only taking one in the class.

I always assumed they would take two with one being more of a utility guy rather than a true RB. Semantics and all that.

I think Elliott is that utility guy and I look for them to still take a big RB a la Derrick Green.

That said, is there still a chance that they take another back not named Derrick Green if someone else with an offer wants to pull the trigger?

Pure guess but think Derrick Green may have to show up and wow some people at camp if he wants in.

Think we're pretty set at RB but think Derrick Green has the talent to come in and have the coaches say maybe we can fit in another RB.

Do like the Elliot pickup. Serious wheels, great hips and looks very comfortable catching it out the backfield. Looks to be a great fit for the spread.

Give me Lisle, Lazard, Pocic and one of Montelus, Johnson, Gray, etc. and I will be ecstatic with this OL haul and will officially declare the OL deficiencies rectified in only two recruiting cycles...something I didn't think was possible.

Next year the OL could include:

Bobek - JR
Boren - FR/SO
Brown - SO
Carter - SO
Decker - FR/SO
Dodson - FR/SO
Hall - SR
Linsley - SR
Mewhort - SR
Norwell - SR
O'Connor - FR/SO
Underwood - JR
Lazard - FR
Lisle - FR
Pocic - FR
?????? - FR

That is a phenomenal senior class that will get one more shot together with a string of studs waiting in the wings. This year will be crucial for guys like Brown, Carter and Underwood...the time is now or you might be buried on the depth chart by the incoming talent from 2012 and 2013.

This class is already starting to take shape. I could see the rest of the class filling out something like this:

QB - Barrett?
RB - Green?
RB - Elliott
WR - Foster?
WR - Gibson?
TE - McNeil?
TE - Heuerman?
OL - Pocic?
OL - Lisle
OL - Lazard?
DE - Bower?
DE - Bosa/Daniel?
DT - Price
DT - Munger/Hill?
LB - Love?
LB - Anzlone/Smith/Neal/Gedeon/Kimbourgh?
LB - Anzlone/Smith/Neal/Gedeon/Kimbourgh?
CB - Burrows
CB - Woodard
S - Thompson
S - Thomas?
ATH - Marshall

22 might be a bit of a stretch in this class but the staff is sure recruiting like they think they are going to get there.

Notes: I am not as bullish on Foster and Thomas as others are. Long way to go with both of those kids and not saying it can't be done but they could be easily replaced by other WRs and safeties. Not real optimisic about any of the LB options at this point other than Love. I could see Anzalone at Florida or Stanford, Smith at ND, Neal staying south, Gedeon at Michigan and Kimbrough waiting on an offer. But it is tough to try and project this class in April so believe me when I say the final 2013 class will probably like very different then what I have up there.
