Ohio State definitely played "small ball" in the running game. It looks like the big backs - Rod Smith, Brionte Dunn, and Warren Ball - aren't going to be getting many carries this year.
Had same thought but could be something that won't be so much the case as the year goes on. This offense needs but one thing, the OLine to gel. And then? Look the [pumpkin] out.

All of this is just my two cents

the Oline definitely needs work. Way too many guys getting in the backfield from th defensive line.

JT Barrett looked good accordingly. He is a redshirt freshman and has never really had any real game experience. That fact, and the fact that he only threw one interception today, makes me believe that this is the kid is going to take us forward.

Our running game needs to pick up, but that has to do with playcalling. We need to stop getting cute and start going back to basics when we have 3 to 5 yards to gain. When you have bulldozers in the backfield, use them. I believe there's only one or two of the middle running plays where they stopped for no gain or one or 2 yards. Every other one was 3 to 5 yards. I know Urban loves the spread, but smash mouth football gets you where you want to go sometimes.

All in all, I saw what I thought I was going to see today. This team is not ready for prime time. Too many questions, too many answers that need to be had. If we get through this regular-season with no more than two losses I'll be ecstatic. Right now I see three or four losses on the schedule the way these guys are playing.

There's a fair amount to work on before taking on Va Tech. However the good news is that the bulk of that work needs to be on the offense. The Dline was active, Grant had a solid game diagnosing his man and maintaining his responsibility and the secondary supported the run quite well.

JT was solid for not playing in a live game in 2 years. I expect him to grow quite a bit.

Overall, no reason to panic. Va Tech will be a good test for the Oline and let us not forget - we won our last Rose Bowl with a team that struggled against Navy.

#88 Steve miller had a rough time playing his assignment in containing the backside, was quickly replaced by #17 (whoever that is)

Not to sound lime a Pedster but that first Navy TD was bullshit.

Still very concerned about the instincts, angles, discipline and tackling of the back 7

We shall see

No question we were sort of one-note on that front. Certainly hope we see the power backs and TEs work into a broader offensive philosophy and scheme as things gel. Not going to go as far as to say I expect that to happen, but we have the talent and depth to give a lot of different (and very effective) looks offensively -- that's what I hope to see.

I never liked the "pylon is the goal-line" rule when the pylon sits outside the field of play. Georgia fan and ex-navy guy at BW3s even said we got screwed on that play. He and I both agreed that inside touch is TD, outside touch like that should be OB and down at the one inch mark. Oh well, is what it is.

I don't mind the pylon touch.

I mind the pylon touch being a TD with the knee down out of bounds

We have a new star at LBer in Lee. 7 tackles and 2TFLs and a fumble return for a TD. That's a nice games work! Worley has some work to do to challenge Lee.
The defense was pushed to the limit and responded.
The offensive line will be much better next week.
Eze showed some rust but will be much better next week. Samuel is gonna be "special" this year!
Wilson is much better and stronger and has soft receiver hands.
Barrett had a couple WTF moments but never lost his composure and was decent.

That's a damn good Navy team and they won't lose many games this year. I think they go 10-2. 11-1. Those guys just never quit and scratch for every yard.

Some thoughts:

  • Navy was winning the game of inches early on. They had a catch reviewed to keep a TD drive alive. That drive ended with the RB making an amazing effort play to extend the ball and just barely nudge the pylon after it looked like the Buckeyes had made a goaline stand. They also got lucky on a forward pass that saved them from a potential turnover deep in their own territory. I'm not sure Reynolds even thought about that factor after muffing the option play.
  • I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in coaches' efforts. It just felt like they were sleep-walking or not all the way into the game.
  • Herman's call on the option goaline play was classic over-thinking by him. Once again showed his playbook should have a lot less pages sometimes.
  • The lack of a challenge and the rush to go for for the 4th down was so short-sighted. How no one thought to make sure that 3rd down play got a second look is baffling. One of the worst fumble calls I've seen and I can't believe the ref fell for it, let alone the 7 other refs and the Ohio State coaching staff. Let the team down by not reviewing.
  • Meyer mentioned they shrunk the playbook in 2nd half. It worked.
  • Barrett needs to be a little better on the read-option, really he needs to keep more, even if to just keep the defense honest.
  • I have a feeling JT will learn more from this 1 game than he has his entire time in Columbus.
  • The O-line put Barrett in some tough situations. Pretty good run-blocking, but pass protection was suspect. It got better in the 2nd half and I have some hope.
  • Put me in the camp that thought Darron Lee played a good game. He had a couple times where he took a misstep, but playing that misdirection, option offense is no easy task. He seemed to be in position and force the pitch a lot.
  • I thought the corners and safeties needed to do a better job of stopping the edge and taking care of the RB. They were non-existent.
  • Michael Bennett played a man's game today.
  • Everyone else has mentioned my other thoughts- Dontre, Samuel, Jalin, wow. Oh and let's never play a team like that again.
  • Last but not least, I'm just glad to see the Buckeyes playing football again.

That sort of scenario is somewhat by design. Coach Meyer has even commented on that with similar plays in Ohio State's playbook - that the pitch is low-risk because if it's dropped it's an incomplete pass and not a fumble.

The interesting thing to me is that by rule it is technically a forward pass, but statistically those plays are treated as rushing plays unless the ball is dropped. They had probably a dozen or more other option pitches where the ball went forward in a similar manner, but the box score only shows four pass attempts by Navy. I imagine if they counted all of those forward option pitches as passes like they technically are that Reynolds would show up as the nation's most efficient passer.

One of the quirks of the college game, I suppose.

True, and it did seem to be by design because it was happening far more often going forward than lateral. Smart.

My dad and I talked about that exact thing during the game. When they brought up that Reynolds was 2-4 on passing, we were wondering about all those forward pitches.

The little dropoffs to Jalin/Dontre could similarly be ruled passes on the Buckeyes side. I don't know the case-by-case basis that stat keepers may use to judge that. I figure it's a laziness thing that's not worth analyzing on their end, if it looks lateral or like a 1 foot pass, don't even bother.

The even bigger "hose job" was about 10 minutes to go in the 3rd period; it was 3rd and 4 at the Navy 48. Ezekiel Elliott goes for a first down on on his back over a defender (which should have been a first down). They knock the ball lose after he is on the ground and spot it back at the 45; now it is 4th and 1, and we don't convert. Hindsight is 20/20, needless to say, Meyer should have called TO and asked for a review.

I believe that the bad breaks/calls eventually even out; maybe all the questionable calls will actually go our way vs Va Tech.
