tOSU at Navy (M&T Bank Stadium), Aug 30th @ 12pm ET, CBS Sports Network

NAVY is a tough Offense to defend. With a rather young, inexperienced Defense holding a veteran team to 17 pts in what was essential an away game is not too bad. I still don't think NAVY'S first TD was really a TD but it is what it is.
I was glad to see all three of our starting LB's make some big plays. Grant on a sack, Lee made a few big plays with the fumble recovery/return for a TD and a huge tackle in the backfield when the game was still on the line. Perry made some good stops at key moments as well. Bennett and Washington were difference makers on the inside.
My biggest complaint against the Defense was way too many missed tackles. Correct that and we will be OK.

All in all, lots of problems but some signs of brilliance.

On offense, there were a lot of unrealistic expectations. Barrett needs a lot of work, but he impressed me with his poise. I think he is more mobile than we saw today. I don't think a lot of fans expected the Buckeyes to put up 34 points after that first half. The O line looked better as the game progressed. Samuel and Zeke had moments. I'd give them a B-.

The defense scares me a bit. Granted, this is a team that can run the option well and they are experienced, but there were too many big plays given on the day. When the defensive play calling became more aggressive, the D-line showed its teeth a bit more. The second half, they had some signs of real excellence. I'd give them a B- as well.

It does no good to cry over the refs, but it must be noted that every major call and spot went against the Buckeyes, including that bogus first touchdown.

I'll take the win. The scoreline looks good enough to keep them in the top 12, but this team needs a lot of work before it becomes a NC challenger or even a B1G champion.

Yea hopefully we can ditch the Manziel/winston/hill/Guiton comparisons now.
JT just needs to be JT and we'll be ok.
A lot of growing up to do before october but i still think this team can compete for the conference title.

To me, he looked a lot like Kenny Guiton out there. Calm, collected. Isn't explosive enough to take the game over by himself, but not too prone to terrible failures. If he can improve, and can continue to do so.. He'll have at least 3 years to start for OSU.
Coming into the season, I think Kenny G was a good baseline for him. However, I think it was pretty apparent on several of his throws that he has more ability than Guiton. 225 yards in the air and another 50 on the ground and 2 Tds with a, shall we say, suspect OL is pretty impressive for a kid playing in his first college game against a pretty decent team and his first real game in 22 months. I'm not worried about the QB position right now.

How about Nuernberger today. Big FG early and other than the kickoff OB, very solid....
Yep. I think we have ourselves a big time kicker...and Punter. I know we may take Johnston for granted after how good he was last year, but he's a WEAPON in the field position game, which could be huge this season. Much like Andy Groom was in 2002.

Also, I think it was Clinton with the bad KO.

Okay...some thoughts.

  • Um
  • Err
  • Weeeellllllll...
Okay, I don't know what to take away from that. Are we gonna get the team from the first three [Mark May]ty quarters, or the one that seemed to pull it together in the 4th and enforce their will? I don't know. I'll give this another try....

  • JT Barrett- I think we have a QB. Yes, he made some mistakes, but for a kid making his first college start, I thought he played pretty damn well. And, the kid is unflappable. Even after those mistakes, he didn't look down. He just went about his business. Once the OL started to give him some time in the pocket, I thought he played exceptionally well.
  • The OL- Ugh, the first three quarters were U-G-L-Y. Really UGLY. They played much better in the 4th Q, but was that Navy just running out of steam? I don't know, but this is an area of major concern for me.
  • The youngsters- Dontre/Curtis/Zeke/Jalin. Dontre looks like a totally different player. More decisive. Quicker. Runs with more purpose. He could be REALLY good this year. Curtis- Looks like he could be a significant part of this offense too. Played very well. EzE- Hard to take much away from that game as his role of "inside/power runner" was made infinitely more difficult by the sieve that was the interior OL for most of the game. Looked good in the 4th, though. Jalin- Like what I saw out of him early on. Didn't see much, though.
  • Defense- No idea. Can't take much away from a game against a gimmicky offense. We know nothing about the pass D. The DL looked stout most of the game. LB play was scattershot...sometimes looked really good, but then seemed to follow up a big play by losing contain on the option and allowing a big run. In short...we need more information.
  • Special Teams- Kicker and Punter look to be in very good hands. I think Dontre will end up breaking a couple returns this year.
Excited about: Dontre, Samuel, JT, the Defensive Line
Nervous about: The LBs, and the OL...my God, the OL.

I'd like to add Thomas in there. I thought he and JT showed good chemistry in spring, and saw it again tonight.
Think he can be JT's Gonzo... not really similar players but Gonzo wasnt first choice with Teddy and Santonio ... yet Smith always seemed to find him for those clutch do-or-die plays.

That's what I liked. He actually had to make some real throws, and looked pretty good doing so. Aside from the one bad INT, I thought he was pretty close to flawless throwing the ball. Looked really good, and that gives me hope for the season...if the OL can block better than they did the first 3 quarters today. COme to think of it, given the pressure he was under, I think it's quite impressive he really only had the one bad throw. He didn't look like a kid taking his first college snaps, and first live game snaps in 22 months to me. Very impressed.
And, when he sees the open touchdown pass he missed on the interception, he'll learn from it.

Ohio State definitely played "small ball" in the running game. It looks like the big backs - Rod Smith, Brionte Dunn, and Warren Ball - aren't going to be getting many carries this year.

first half was rough, but i think that was to be expected.

second half, and especially the fourth quarter, they played darn near flawless football.

Barrett is gonna be a star. he's got it between the ears, which is the most important thing at this level. they all have talent.

Bright spots:

- Bennett was a monster on the inside, repeatedly beating his man and even tossing aside double-teams.
- Secondary played well--liked what I saw out of Bell and Burrows.
- Barrett played very well for his first career start; his decision-making has some room for improvement, but that will come.
- Liked what I saw out of Marshal in the first half, and wondered why he didn't get more touches in the second.
- Dontre is electric. He will take back multiple returns this year, and in addition to his gaudy averages (7.2 yards per carry, 23 yards per catch), he was opening up the rest of the field as a decoy.
- Samuel will be great--7 carries for 45 yards. Looks like we'll see huge things out of him this year.
- Nuernberger had a great debut--46 yarder on the road in close game as a true freshman.
- Speaking of special teams, Johnston is a stud. What a treat to have a guy on your roster who may be the best punter in college football, and he's only a sophomore.

Room for improvement:

- Worley and Lee both seemed to struggle, often being out of position or getting eaten up by blocks,
- Offensive line was slow out of the gates, but improved in the second half.
- Urban's decision to quick snap that 4th and 1 cost OSU the drive--Elliott's fumble on 3rd down would've been overturned and the ball would've been placed where he was lying on his back, which was past the 1st down marker.
- Elliott struggled, surprisingly--12 carries for 44 yards (3.7 yards per carry).

I agree with Maurice Clarett on twitter...tackling has been a problem for a while, and it looks like it still might be

Besides that miss by Powell in the second half, I thought secondary tackling was better today, Bell and Burrows in particular. I didn't notice a lot of guys just looking for the knockout hit without wrapping up like we saw a lot of last year. Even on Powell's miss, he had good form, he just missed the tackle. It happens.
