tOSU at Navy (M&T Bank Stadium), Aug 30th @ 12pm ET, CBS Sports Network

Like to know where McMillan was. Thought he'd at least get a little time in there with the run heavy offense we were playing. Thought Grant had his best game as a Buckeye - really attacked most of the game which is definitely his strength.

Only two true freshmen played - Samuel and Nuernberger. I don't think it was a good game for getting young guys out there, especially since it was such a struggle for three quarters.

I think he will be much more involved going forward. By far Grants greatest strength is against the run. As things become more equal, their time will become split more equally.

That's somewhat of a worry of mine for VA Tech. Their first game was against a nobody, so while we had to gameplan like crazy to play navy, they could probably spend more time on us.
Except for the fact VTech had serious issues of their own to deal with like starting a brand new QB and multiple freshman. And Also they run our spread offense so that helps us.

The even bigger "hose job" was about 10 minutes to go in the 3rd period; it was 3rd and 4 at the Navy 48. Ezekiel Elliott goes for a first down on on his back over a defender (which should have been a first down). They knock the ball lose after he is on the ground and spot it back at the 45; now it is 4th and 1, and we don't convert. Hindsight is 20/20, needless to say, Meyer should have called TO and asked for a review.

I believe that the bad breaks/calls eventually even out; maybe all the questionable calls will actually go our way vs Va Tech.

Zeke is on his back, defenseless and obviously in control of the ball and the refs let play continue? I don't understand that one at all. So, a guy is down, on his back and you could just jump on him? Does that make any sense at all? The refs blew it plain and simple.

Although I liked the instinct to go uptempo on 4th, someone on the coaching staff needed the wherewithal to make sure that was reviewed.

Things are just fine. Maybe the Navy runner was down before he hit the pylon, maybe not. But if 7 points means we lose, we didn't deserve to win anyway. The defense has played just fine. The offense has shown signs of life, but gets a bad read, bad play call, or blown assignment and screws it up. So far, I like what I see with Barrett. Thinking back to Braxton's first start, I think he's looked better and more prepared. It'll just take some time and some confidence in himself and from the coaching staff to open up the playbook more.

So any team that wins by less than 7 deserves to lose?

If you are looking for a positive try this -

Our OL, for most of the game, was horrible.

Yet we had 420 yards total offense, averaged 5 yards per carry, and played a RS Frosh QB - who has never played a college down and has not played a down of competitive football anywhere in almost two years - threw for 226 yards. That is more yards in a debut game for any QB since before 2001 (including Pryor, Brax, and Troy).

And that OL has four new starters. They are entitled to 3 quarters of horrible.

I was pretty much going to post these same thoughts. The Buckeyes didn't give up and didn't panic (although I did, lol) They wore down the Mids and got a good road win over a pretty decent team. I think 8-10 wins for Navy is not unrealistic.

On the VPI!!!

Okay...some thoughts.

  • Um
  • Err
  • Weeeellllllll...
Okay, I don't know what to take away from that. Are we gonna get the team from the first three [Mark May]ty quarters, or the one that seemed to pull it together in the 4th and enforce their will? I don't know. I'll give this another try....

  • JT Barrett- I think we have a QB. Yes, he made some mistakes, but for a kid making his first college start, I thought he played pretty damn well. And, the kid is unflappable. Even after those mistakes, he didn't look down. He just went about his business. Once the OL started to give him some time in the pocket, I thought he played exceptionally well.
  • The OL- Ugh, the first three quarters were U-G-L-Y. Really UGLY. They played much better in the 4th Q, but was that Navy just running out of steam? I don't know, but this is an area of major concern for me.
  • The youngsters- Dontre/Curtis/Zeke/Jalin. Dontre looks like a totally different player. More decisive. Quicker. Runs with more purpose. He could be REALLY good this year. Curtis- Looks like he could be a significant part of this offense too. Played very well. EzE- Hard to take much away from that game as his role of "inside/power runner" was made infinitely more difficult by the sieve that was the interior OL for most of the game. Looked good in the 4th, though. Jalin- Like what I saw out of him early on. Didn't see much, though.
  • Defense- No idea. Can't take much away from a game against a gimmicky offense. We know nothing about the pass D. The DL looked stout most of the game. LB play was scattershot...sometimes looked really good, but then seemed to follow up a big play by losing contain on the option and allowing a big run. In short...we need more information.
  • Special Teams- Kicker and Punter look to be in very good hands. I think Dontre will end up breaking a couple returns this year.
Excited about: Dontre, Samuel, JT, the Defensive Line
Nervous about: The LBs, and the OL...my God, the OL.

Not about to read back through everything, but I believe OSU had only ten men on the field for their first FG. Price was there later on.

McMillan and Erick Smith both played. Raekwon the Chef had (I believe) four plays - punt return team twice and kickoff coverage twice (after the Lee fumble return and the final TD).

Smith got all of one snap, on the kick coverage unit after the final TD.

Congrats to those two, Samuel, Nuernberger, Apple, Barrett, Conley, Lee, Lewis, Marshall, Munger, Price, Worley and Corey Smith for their official debuts.

Rutgers and Notre Dame are the only teams on Navy's schedule that should keep them from double digit wins. It's not a difficult slate.
