anyone else want to punch Gary Danielson when he was calling JT an average runner at best?

wut? I mean he's no Brax, but I'm pretty sure JT will be able to create things with his legs. Can't believe he thought Alex Smith was a much better runner

From what I've seen from his high school highlight film, I would say he's a better athlete and runner than Guiton (Guiton was above average runner).

At the point where the comment was made Barrett had been pretty poor running the ball. He got better later in the game, and perhaps those later runs were more indicative of his abilities. If anything Danielson may have been too hasty to make a sweeping conclusion about a player in his first collegiate game. To the extent he was speaking to Barrett's rushing performance up to that point though, he wasn't off the mark.

The even bigger "hose job" was about 10 minutes to go in the 3rd period; it was 3rd and 4 at the Navy 48. Ezekiel Elliott goes for a first down on on his back over a defender (which should have been a first down). They knock the ball lose after he is on the ground and spot it back at the 45; now it is 4th and 1, and we don't convert. Hindsight is 20/20, needless to say, Meyer should have called TO and asked for a review.

I believe that the bad breaks/calls eventually even out; maybe all the questionable calls will actually go our way vs Va Tech.

According to the box score, the official ruling was that he was down short of the first down before rolling over the defender, not that he fumbled and the officials spotted it back at the 45.

I actually thought he looked modestly slow. I think some of the posts in this thread indicated as much as well. Perhaps it's just all of us accustomed to watching Miller, but I saw JTB as a tad slow but he seems to be bringing others assets to the table that make him effective.

Some thoughts:

  • Herman's call on the option goaline play was classic over-thinking by him. Once again showed his playbook should have a lot less pages sometimes.

Herman's play call on the INT inside the 10 probably falls into this category as well. The Buckeyes drove right down the field by running it, and Navy seemingly had no answer. Then, on first and goal from the 8 yard line, Herman calls a pass play. JT gets pressure, breaks away from it, makes a bad decision, and throws a pick. The run was working so well, and OSU needed points. Herman should've stuck with what was working, especially with a QB making his first start.

- Not going to take too much from this game, especially regarding the D. I realize they missed a few tackles, but I think this coming week will tell us more.
- The OL obviously struggled early, but showed much better in the 2nd half.
- As others have said, Dontre Wilson is a completely different player. I expect a huge year from him.
- Also love what I saw from Curtis Samuel....that kid is going to be a star & I agree with @jlb1705 on the Michael Wiley reference.
- Herman certainly leaves me scratching my head sometimes, but I'd expect that from any coordinator...no one is perfect & I'm not going to complain...especially compared to where the offense was in 2011.
- I liked what I saw from JT and would give him a 'B' on the day. A lot of positive, with plenty of room for growth. Can't complain about his performance after not playing in a game since October of 2012.
- Nothing compares to a game in The Shoe. This was my first Buckeye road game (a home game for me). Buckeye Nation was certainly out in force (probably 80/20 OSU fans, minus the brigade of midshipmen), but the crowd was flat (to be expected on the road & 12:00 start).

As Coach Meyer said, it's great to get this game behind us. 1-0, with no injuries, is all you can ask for.

Might be good advice:

Never schedule Navy. Seriously, don't. They're incredibly well coached and the option offense is a complete pain to play against. Why would you sign up for this nonsense? The 2014 edition of the Midshipmen look particularly nasty, racking up 390 total yards (370 rushing) against the much ballyhooed Ohio State defense. Teams farther down Navy's schedule would be well advised to give them the respect they deserve.

Agree We left the game without a knee injury on D..that is a win.

Vern Lundquist was terrible, too. I kept thinking about Keith Jackson's "Barn Childress" comment, or "When was the last time there was a team in the national championship game both named 'Brandon', one named 'Schnittker', the other named 'Joe'?"

He couldn't figure out that Navy scored the one touchdown, instead of being stopped on fourth down.
Or receivers caught the ball out of bounds and he couldn't figure out why it was now 2nd and 10. When a fan like me catches so many of his mistakes, maybe it's time to pay attention to the game.

"Nonsense" is right.

My observations

- I think Tom Herman will have to learn our teams limitations just as much as our players will. 1st and goal and we throw the ball? Option on 3rd and 1?

- I thought Samuel was our spark on offense in the second half. He really ran hard inside the tackles.

-Zeke was hard to gauge due to the oline but to me he also seemed to compound things early by not being patient enough.

- We better learn we can't always give the ball when either 2 or 17 comes in motion into the backfield. Just the threat of us taking it wide with those two should make it easier through the middle.

- JT looked great to me. Throwing on the run for a first down, down the seam that Dontre dropped (TOUGH THROW), and the wheel route with great touch were all very impressive to me.

- I don't know what to make of the defense. On one hand I though we stiffened when we needed and gave up fewer points than I thought we would. On the other hand there was a lot of big hitters. However now I've learned the coaches were caught off guard by the inside counter play we couldn't stop (they've never showed that).

- We need to trust JT and give him the full playbook. He will find the open man and to me appeared so calm in the pocket.

-how about our kicking game? Good coverage on kickoffs, big returns, 2 for 2 on field goals, and how about johnstons punt that traveled like 60 yards in the air?

- My only take away from our defense was we had a rough time staying on our feet and when you have the pitch assignment you can't be on your stomach as the play goes past you. I thought we looked fast, we hit hard but just had a hard time with cuts plus we missed a few tackles.

Next week will be interesting. I'm just glad we have a normal offense coming and because it's at night and at home we will be fine.

I just thought it was really an unfair assessment after a half of football
