tOSU at Navy (M&T Bank Stadium), Aug 30th @ 12pm ET, CBS Sports Network

A couple final comments:

Cris Ash: "The fundamentals were fine and Ash said he saw some really good tackling. The problem with Navy is that they always have answers for everything you do. Especially as the game goes on, because they pay attention to how a defense attacks them."

Luke Fickell: Will the Buckeyes face a tougher team this year? "I don't know, man. They're a scrappy group.
Ezekiel Elliott: He said Navy is undersized, but they are disciplined and they just don't give up.

Michael Bennett: Bennett said he wasn't sure the Buckeyes would play a tougher team than this one. "I've never gone up against running backs that run harder than they do." He said the offensive line was undersized, but they "gave us troubles all day." "It was a grind with them."

The point being:

Navy recruits "future Naval officers" first and "football players" second. I'm sure that they don't go after men with questionable character, poor academics, and/or a history of past criminal activity/drug use, etc. If you had to pick one team that Ohio State plays this year that you would least mind if Ohio State lost to; Navy would be the team. Fortunately the Buckeyes did win though. These are the future officers of the US Navy and they showed a lot of character/toughness/determination, etc. out there on the football field. I think we can rest assured that the future leadership of the US Navy looks to be in very good hands.

Uh, no, it would not be.

If I had to pick the one team I would least mind losing to, it would be whatever team were to beat us in the national championship game. (And that would still piss me off mightily.)

My Sunday thoughts:

- Very good QB play from JT and honestly, I expected exactly what happened. One big turnover (glad it was not at a crucial moment) but shook it off to play very well. Yeah the TD to Devin was under-thrown a tad but honestly I think it was perfect...he was WIDE open, no way you want to risk overthrowing that ball...the throw still gave Devin the chance to break away after the catch with relative ease. Overall, a very good performance that should give JT a ton of confidence moving forward.
- The skilled players are as good as advertised and will take a huge burden off JT. So many different ways to involve Jalin (very impressed with him, quick and has some very good power), Samuel (lightning quick but loves contact, will be a star here), EzE (pretty good game but his low YPC can mostly be attributed to the OL giving him no chance early on), and Dontre (noticeably bigger, plays with more confidence, and a big-play is waiting to happen with him). I love how all of those guys were utilized and I think we will see some real creativity as the season progresses.
- OL play was attrocious for the most part...in the first half, I thought my worst fears were coming to fruition. They started picking it up and gelling the second half, but the pass protection needs to improve by leaps and bounds...Navy was one of the worst DLs in the country last year. I'm definitely not in panic mode though...Warringer is one of the best OL coaches in the country, it is very early, and we just replaced the entire OL. Lots of the issues appeared to be miscommunication and not physical shortcomings.
- The DL played great considering the scheme...they're going to a monster of a unit this year.
- Tough to tell on the LBs and DBs. I thought all of Grant, Perry, Lee, and Worley had some really nice moments. Grant in particular stepped up and answered the call mostly, which is very encouraging. Perry was a sure tackler and had some nice moments, but was one step behind at times. Lee was never a step behind but did miss some tackles and bounce off some guys. The DBs obviously we don't know much on but seemed to be in good position on the rare pass plays. But as others have said, we will know more about the back 7 after the VT game.
- Great special teams. Johnston was incredible, Nuernberger looked darn good, and the coverage was solid. Hopefully all the above are a mainstay.
- Coaching was solid and some good adjustments were made. As for the rush yards...I am not surprised nor too disappointed. We bent and really didn't break often (that one pylon "TD" was not a TD...really we only gave up 10 points). Props to the defensive staff. Offensively I was a tad disappointed that no real adjustments were made on the OL it seemed until the 2nd half. And the speed option of 4th and 1 was absolutely mind-boggling and that was very costly. But overall, really creative play calling and tailored to play to JT's strengths. At the end of the day, I could not be much happier with a 34-17 result considering we were not in the 'Shoe, first game of the year with a freshman QB, and a very quality opponent. Navy will be a top 25 team by the end of the year and be a 10+ win game imo. Very, very happy with how our Buckeyes performed. Now let's go beat the Hokies!
