tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

1. I thought Ryan Day did a really nice job early on with the play calling in terms of letting Stroud take some shots down field. Then the wheels came off a little bit in the second quarter, but Day stuck with it. He didn’t make a knee-jerk change with a young QB that could really hurt his confidence and he kept letting him take some shots and eventually they started connecting. It wasn’t a pretty first half from Stroud by any means, but he grew into the game and there are going to be some ups and downs this year regardless of which quarterback is in the game. Overall I think this was a really good learning experience for Stroud and should serve him well moving forward.

2. If you were skeptical about the defense improving heading into this season, you’re probably not feeling better tonight. Minnesota does not have a bevy of weapons on the outside but the Gophers were still mostly able to move the ball through the air when they needed to. The run defense wasn’t much better, but it was at least understandable going against a massive offensive line with an outstanding running back like Ibrahim. The secondary struggling, especially in the second half was pretty concerning. Yes, some injuries, first game jitters, etc. but that was not a performance that will squash any concerns.

3. That being said, I did think true freshman Denzel Burke showed some flashes. Took a couple of losses as well, but getting thrown right into the fire, making some plays, getting beat a time or two and coming back to make more plays, was a good sign. Burke was a camp standout and looks like he could eventually grow into a pretty darn good player.

4. Miyan Williams certainly showed on Thursday night that he is deserving of a role in this offense, but everyone got a glimpse of why TreVeyon Henderson has created so much buzz around Columbus this off-season. He simply brings a different dimension to the Ohio State offense and he has to play more moving forward. It is very likely that he will. Henderson and Williams have to be the one-two punch moving forward.

5. Credit to Minnesota’s offensive line in this game. It was a given that the Gophers’ massive line was going to be a tough challenge in the run game, but it held up extremely well in pass protection as well. Yes, Zach Harrison was able to make a game-changing play in the third quarter, but it was a very quiet night for the Ohio State pass rush as a whole. We’ll find out more about this defensive line as the season progresses and whether tonight was just a one off against a really good O-Line or if this group just lacks that elite pass rusher.

6. If Josh Proctor’s injury is significant, that is a BIG problem. Will be watching that one closely in the coming days. If you ranked the players that this Ohio State team can least afford to lose, Proctor would be right near the top. Until the injury, my Proctor-related observation was going to be that he needs to be back there at free safety even more than he was tonight as Bryson Shaw just didn’t look comfortable. Would be a pretty devastating loss for a secondary that already has a few question marks.

This was a good win but it was bittersweet for me. As some of you know in past years every time the Bucks scored my dogs received a treat. Two weeks ago we lost one of our dogs, Brutus and now are down to two (Buckeye and Tressel). In the past after a Buckeye TD, I would scream Go Bucks and the dogs would rush over a give me a high five and then they would get a treat. As Williams was scoring the first TD, neither my wife nor I yelled and my wife broke down as we both realized that Brutus was not there to give the “paw five.” Rest In Peace, Brutus…we love you and miss you…

Amen. We lost one of two sisters, Moo, on February 6. The Rainbow Bridge sucks for those left behind.

Separating myself from the emotion of the game, here are my thoughts. Playing a good team (I think they are top 25 with Ibrahim) on the road, in a hostile environment, new QB, missing both starters at Corner, all new starters in the back 7....I’ll take it! Yes, Ohio State didn’t look good at times, but we have to understand, that’s going to happen.

Although, I do very much still have the same concerns about Coombs that I had last year.

Bestbuck36 nailed it....

The initial contact was Ransom's shoulder/chest to the WR's shoulder. There was a residual helmet to helmet contact; however, I'm guessing that the WR's injury was caused by the whiplash of the initial hit, not the subsequent helmet to helmet contact. Ransom was not running beside the WR, he was running full speed toward the WR:

Targeting law not clinical or mathematical..it’s emotion I know it when I see it according to the leaders of our conference. So it’s hit or miss enforcement.

Agreed, trying to take the emotion out, and I might feel better in another day, but there's a lot to work on, but also a lot to like. I'll let the more expert people have the breakdowns(@ScriptOhio had a great one above, and I couldn't add much more). But this defense must tighten up quick, not sure why the portion of the defense that Coombs earned his stripes on, is having the most issues. I'm sure youth had a lot to do with it, but man, there were so many open middle of the field plays, and perimeter passes that should've been taken out. Guys like Burke, Cavazos, Watts had some great moments mixed with moments that left you yelling at the TV. But that's what happens with freshman. Get through Oregon with a W, and we have a lot of season to improve.

Lots of comments; however, the bottom lines are...

1. It was clean (hard) hit and a good football play. The "defenseless player" argument is bullshit. He wasn't helplessly falling to the ground, he was a WR with the ball running for a TD. I'm sorry for you pussies that don't like physical contact in football, but in football you are allowed to tackle (hit) those guys.
2. It was a catch and a fumble, and the early whistle probably cost Ohio State a TD on the play.

Script nails it. What was Ransom supposed to do? "Oh, he's a defenseless player, I can't tackle him".
Bull
Fucking
Shit.

Just more shit flowing from the haters.
